It appears that another uproar in the Korean-American community is about to take place. The racist incidentinvolving a fast food worker, a customer, and a receipt has brought tension, this time in Los Angeles. On February 22, Steve Sohn, a Korean-American residing in L.A., was enraged after a Burger King employeelabeled him “chinito” - a derogatory word used to describe people who are ethnically from East Asia - on his receipt.
The word literally means “Chinese,” but many like Sohn take offense to such words because not all Asians are from China. There have been no reports on whether or not Sohn has taken or will take any legal action. It was in January of this year when a Starbucks employee in Atlanta, Georgia, drew a couple of slanted lines on the plastic cups on two non-native English speaking Korean customers. Despite the fact that Starbucks later issued an officialapology, the Korean-American Society in Atlanta is currently seeking ways to sue the company.
Racist Incident Fires up Asian-American Community
