The Posco Energy is to establish a fuel cell plant in Indonesia, which is the first power plant in foreign countries.
As part of the Official Development Assistance and the East Asia Climate Partnership (EACP), the first fuel cell power plant in Southeast Asia is going to be financially supported by the KOICA(Korea International Cooperation Agency) while the Posco Energy is responsible for equipment. In particular, based on its experiences in industrializing fuel cells, the Posco Enercy will provide the Indonesian government with political support for fuel cells, fuel cell promotion master plan and operational technics. As a result, it will be able to set an example for export industrialization of renewable energy through products, technologies and policy export.
The fuel cell power plant with a power capacity of 300km is expected to supply power of 2,365mwh, which is the amount capable of accommodating 1,000 households, to fresh water equipment inside the Ancol Dreamland, a resort designation while helping improve the livelihoods of the residents by providing power and water. In addition, without producing noise and air pollutants, the plant can reduce 320 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which is corresponding to planting 110,000 trees, allowing the Posco Energy to lead by an environmental friendly example in Indonesia that is the 2nd largest CO2 emitter in the world.
The president of the Posco Energy, Oh Chang-Kwan, who is also the president of the Korea New & Renewable Energy signed a MOU with the METI (Indonesia Renewable Energy Society) and plans to push forward with the exchange of human resources in new & renewable energy, policy information sharing and policy development cooperation.
The president said that high efficient and environmental friendly fuel cells will be used as effective power generation materials especially in developing countries which are faced with serious environmental pollution resulting from a surge in population and urbanization and have insufficient power infrastructure, and added that he hopes this project will serve as a catalyst for a rise in fuel cell exports to oil producers where the price of LNG is low.
Hydrogen extract form LNG made mainly of ch4 is used for fuel cell materials.
Meanwhile, the Posco Energy is equipped with mass production systems for fuel cells and runs fuel cell power plants with a scale of 52mw in 20 regions nationwide. It is now planning to advance into markets in South East Asia, the Middle East and Asia.
