[013] Now, the Rest of the Story.
[014] In a [waning] summer of 1876, Colonel Robert [G.
Ingersoll] boarded a train for Indianapolis.
[015] He was to attend [a] national reunion of northern
soldiers who had fought in the war between the [s]tates.
[016] Beyond his status [as] one such, Colonel [Ingersoll] was
a militant agnostic, widely reknowned for it.
[017] So passionate was he on that subject[x] in fact, he often
dragged complete strangers into related debates.
[018] And so it was on the 19th of September aboard that very
train that the combative colonel seized a stranger[, a]
fellow veteran of [Shiloh] on his way to the reunion[,]
lured him into his compartment for a discussion on
[Ingersoll]'s favorite topic.
[019] And that[x] second fellow, a retired Major General named
["]Lewis,["] quickly confided [that Ingersoll] was
preaching to the choir.
[020] ["]I'm an agnostic as well,["] Lewis declared, ["]and
therefore likely [to] agree with whatever you say.["]
[021] Well now, it appeared Colonel [Ingersoll] was to endure
the entire train [ride] without the pleasure of
batter[ing a] philosophical opponent to pass the time.
[022] So[,] he did the next best thing[:] he battered his
new[-]found philosophical ally with his latest [stump]
speech for agnosticism [a]nd it was [a dandy,] it was
eloquent and witty, [irreverent], even mocking the folly
of the credulous, the incredibility of [x] divine Christ,
and on and on and on[, a]nd the longer Colonel
[Ingersoll] contunued [the harangue], the more
[uncomfortable] General Lewis felt[, oddly,
uncomfortable] as though something inauthentic were
lurking in the rampant viciousness of the colonel's
argument.
[023] And all at once, General Lewis was ashamed.
[024] Ashamed of all of his life[x] he['d] remained
complacently ambivalent on the issue so obviously
important.
[025] Ashamed that he['d] identified himself with such [x]
critic[s] as Robert [Ingersoll,] with no scholarship of
his own to support the alliance.
[026] ["]My ignorance,["] Lewis later confessed, ["]was
painfully [a] spot[x] of deeper darkness [in the]
darkness[" and] so[, a]s the [g]eneral [walked] from the
train station to his lodging that very evening[,] he
resolved in the quiet to [investigate] for himself, to
research for himself as would [a] scholar the life of
Christ, not depending on [x] precooked explanation[s] of
the clergy [b]ut rather [on] objective histor[ies] and
contemporary writings which embrace[d the] era from
[Flavius] Josephus to [Gibbon's "]Decline and Fall["].
[027] Shortly[,] General Lewis had [amassed a] collection of
[weighty tomes,] detail[ed historical] maps of the
relevant region[s].
[028] He had interviewed innumerable world travelers and
serious first century scholars [and w]ithin months[,] he
knew as much as anyone anywhere about matters central and
peripheral to the times and places of Jesus, including
the [cultures] and [the] customs directly and indirectly
significant [f]or once upon a train trip to
Indianapolis[,] there was an agnostic named Robert
[Ingersoll] whose ministry of unbelief inspired [a]
literary masterpiece and more[,] a story which has
thrilled and [comforted] believers through each
generation since.
[029] For General Lewis, Lew Wallace[,] recognized as [x]
founder of [the] historical novel [in] America[,] had
been writing a different story when he met Colonel
[Ingersoll].
[030] And yet motivated by that encounter, the author decided
to write a tale of the Christ: a tale which you know as
[031] [You do know what too, Jim, Do you know what it is?]
[032] Sure, Ben Hur.
[033] ["Ben Hur," h]e says and Paul says[:]
[034] Ben Hur.
[035] Oh yeh!
[036] Only now[x] you know the rest of the story.
[037] Congratulations! Jim, you get the prize. Hold on.(OK)
[038] Jim[']s a winner here on WMAL.
[039] Don't miss Paul Harvey.
[040] Tune in again tomorrow at 08:30, 11:40.....

[013] 지금 the Rest of the Story를 시작합니다.
