Tobacco Ash
A. W. DUMAS, SR., M.D.
 
     
TOBACCO ASH is the residue of the complete combustion of tobacco. 
It occurs as an amphorous steel gray powder of a slightly saline taste, alkaline in reaction, in- soluble in water and alcohol, but partially soluble in dilute acid. 
It is composed of the following 
 
          
chemical substances:
 
            
Potassium as K₂O
20 to 25%
Phosphates as P₂O
3 to 5%
Calcium as CaO
25 to 30%
Magnesium as MgO
5 to 7%
Sodium as Nag
about 1%
Chlorine
about 2%
Sulphates as SO
about 6%
 
              
These occur in normal ash as carbonates and the balance is therefore, made up by carbon dioxide, which is not indicated above. 
There also occur traces of iron oxide and alumina. 
Almost invariably cigarette tobacco ash includes varying amounts of unburned carbon. 
The ash is secured by burning tobacco in a container made of screen wire with a receptacle placed underneath to catch the ash that may sift through the screen. 
As the stems are dry, when once lighted, they burn rapidly to a white ash. 
This ash is placed in a mortar and finely pul verized. 
The trituration is kept up until the powder is smooth. 
Five pounds of tobacco stems will make approximately three-quarter pounds of tobacco ash. 
The above formula with its well-known chemical ingredients at once sug- gests its therapeutic value in the treatment of certain types of skin lesions of parasitic origin, as tobacco has a powerful parasiticidal action. 
This is well proven by the fact that the refuse of tobacco is frequently used by horticulturists to destroy fungi and other parasitic plant pests. 
It is therefore extensively used by gardeners, especially by those living in the tobacco growing region. 
 
     
A further proof of its parasiticidal effect is that employees of tobacco factories are en- tirely free from any of the diseases caused by the trichophyton, such as, athlete feet and ring- warm. 
A report from the American Tobacco Company states that their employees are entirely free from any industrial diseases. 
Experiments made thus far in the treatment of ringworm, pruritus ani, athlete feet and superficial ulcer- ations have proven so satisfactory that I felt justified in calling your attention to this hither- to unknown therapeutic agent. 
I have used this in chancroidal ulcers with astonishingly good results. 
The ash is desicant, stimulant, and antiseptic. 
When applied to wounds it is ac companied by a moderately severe burning which lasts for several minutes. 
As an ointment made of two drams of ash to one ounce of lanolin it allays the severest itching almost im- mediately. 
This form of application is best suited for dry, scaly and itchy skin. 
In a very severe case of ringworm one application con- trolled the itching at once, and a second and third application cured the long standing ring- worm completely.
Numerous other uses have been found for tobacco ash. 
As the principal ingredient of metal polish it is not abrasive as pumice. 
A good polish can be made by the addition of 20 parts of tobacco ash with 20 parts of crude oleic acid, 2 parts of tallow and 4 parts of paraffin. 
The oleic acid, tallow and paraffin are melted together, gradually stirring in the ash continuously until cold. 
For polishing nickle plate metal, brass or silver the results are good.
As a dentrifice it is also useful. 
What is simpler than lighting a cigar or a cigarette after a meal, which is customary, and saving the ash for brushing your teeth. 
It removes the film, gives a fine luster to the teeth and leaves a pleasant taste and feel in the mouth.

The limited experience I have had with the ash leads me to believe it is a worthwhile remedy. 
in the treatment of pyorrhena alveolaris. 
The fact that tobacco chewers are not as a rule, sufferers of pyorrhena is an indication that the germicidal effect of the tobacco is a factor in preventing its development.
 
I have not had time to use the ash in the treatment of certain internal disorders which I believe would re- spond to its administration. 
As soon as I have the facilities, it is my plan to give some study and do some research with this remedy in connection with chronic gastric catarrh and gastric and duodenal ulcers.
 
             
The Problems of the Rural Doctor

IT IS not my intent here to labor the point or to bore you with the minor details of specific problems of the rural doctor. 
But we are thinking of the major problems that are our daily companions and nightly bed mates.
The greatest and the most important prob- lem that faces the rural doctor of today is as it was of yesterday, namely, the problem of medical education, i.e., arousing the rural people to a state of scientific medicine-consciousness.

We are not amazed at the existence of this problem when we consider the background and underlying factors. 
Only time alone will destroy that idea of superstition based on "hodooism", "conjuring", and "fixing". 
Only persistent effort over a period of many years by young men trained in medicine will convince these rural people it is not necessary to make the ears of the child sore or infected lest the child develop weak and running eyes. 
Only consistent and perpetual conducting of immuni zation clinics throughout the rural schools and communities will change the belief of some of these people that it is a foregone conclusion that their children must of necessity have measles, whooping cough, mumps and the like and prevent them from purposely contacting a healthy child with one that is infected that it might have these childhood diseases and get them over with. 

It will require a steady and active program on the part of the rural doctor to educate the elderly midwife to the fact and convince the expectant mother, that prenatal care and treatment will protect the health of unborn babies and save the lives of mothers who needlessly die in child-birth,
You will recall just a few years ago the secondary roads were almost beyond travel. 
rural doctors, 
white and colored were few and very far apart; 
mode of travel was slow and full of exposure; 
often a physician made one or two calls a day. 
When he was summoned, it was usually a matter of life or death. 
With many of these handicaps removed, today in the rural sections we are still confronted largely with the same problem - "The age old idea of call the doctor when death seems inevitable."
It has been the very difficult task of the rural doctor to impress upon the people the real value and economic saving of preventive medicine and the preservation and extension of human life by early diagnosis and treatment.
Let us consider briefly the problem of handling specific conditions such as cardiacs or cardio-renals. 
If perchance a patient is driven to us by something rather acute and we find in them a heart lesion,

TOBACCO ASH는 담배가 완전히 연소되고 남은 찌꺼기입니다. 
약간 염분 맛이 나는 양쪽성 강철 회색 분말로 발생하며, 
반응 시 알칼리성이며 물과 알코올에는 용해되지 않지만 묽은 산에는 부분적으로 용해됩니다.

이는 일반 재에서 탄산염으로 발생하므로 나머지는 위에 표시되지 않은 이산화탄소로 구성됩니다. 
산화철과 알루미나의 흔적도 발견됩니다. 
거의 변함없이 담배 재에는 다양한 양의 연소되지 않은 탄소가 포함되어 있습니다. 
재는 스크린을 통해 걸러질 수 있는 재를 담기 위해 아래에 콘센트가 있는 스크린 와이어로 만든 용기에 담배를 태워 확보합니다. 
줄기는 건조하기 때문에 불을 붙이면 빠르게 타서 하얀 재가 됩니다. 
이 재를 절구에 넣고 잘게 분쇄합니다. 
분말이 매끄러워질 때까지 분쇄를 계속합니다. 
5파운드의 담배 줄기로 약 3/4파운드의 담배 재가 만들어집니다. 
잘 알려진 화학 성분이 포함된 위의 공식은 담배가 강력한 구충 작용을 하기 때문에 기생충으로 인한 특정 유형의 피부 병변 치료에 치료적 가치가 있음을 시사합니다.

지금까지 백선, 항문소양증, 무좀 및 표재성 궤양 치료에 대한 실험은 매우 만족스러웠기 때문에 지금까지 알려지지 않은 이 치료제에 여러분의 주의를 환기시키는 것이 정당하다고 느꼈습니다. 
나는 이것을 연성하감 궤양에 사용하여 놀라울 정도로 좋은 결과를 얻었습니다. 재는 건조제, 자극제, 방부제입니다.

두 번째, 세 번째 바르면 오래 지속된 백선이 완전히 치료되었습니다.
담배재의 다른 용도도 많이 발견되었습니다. 
금속 광택제의 주성분으로 부석처럼 마모성이 없습니다. 
담배재 20부에 조 올레산 20부, 수지 2부, 파라핀 4부를 첨가하면 좋은 광택을 낼 수 있습니다. 
올레산, 우지, 파라핀을 함께 녹이고 재 속에서 차가워질 때까지 계속 저어줍니다. 
니켈판 금속, 황동 또는 은을 연마할 경우 결과가 좋습니다.
치약으로도 유용합니다. 
관례적인 식사 후에 시가나 담배에 불을 붙이고 양치질을 위해 재를 남겨두는 것보다 간단한 것이 어디 있겠습니까? 
필름을 제거하고 치아에 고운 광택을 주며 입안에 기분 좋은 맛과 느낌을 남깁니다.

그러나 우리는 매일의 동반자와 밤의 침대 동료라는 주요 문제를 생각하고 있습니다.
오늘날 농촌 의사가 직면한 가장 크고 가장 중요한 문제는 어제와 마찬가지로 의학 교육의 문제, 즉 농촌 사람들을 과학적 의학 의식의 상태로 불러일으키는 문제입니다.
 
배경과 근본적인 요인을 고려할 때 우리는 이 문제의 존재에 놀라지 않습니다. 
오직 시간만이 "호두주의", "요술", "고정"에 기초한 미신의 개념을 파괴할 것입니다. 
의학 훈련을 받은 젊은이들이 수년에 걸쳐 끈질기게 노력해야만 이 시골 사람들이 아이의 귀를 아프게 하거나 감염시킬 필요가 없다는 것을 확신하게 될 것입니다. 
시골 학교와 지역사회 전반에 걸쳐 일관되고 영구적인 예방접종 클리닉을 실시해야만 자녀가 반드시 홍역, 백일해, 볼거리 등을 앓고 이를 예방해야 한다는 것이 기정사실이라는 일부 사람들의 믿음이 바뀔 것입니다. 
건강한 어린이와 감염된 어린이를 의도적으로 접촉하여 이러한 어린이 질병을 앓고 극복할 수 있습니다.
 
나이든 조산사에게 산전 관리와 치료가 태아의 건강을 보호하고 불필요하게 사망한 산모의 생명을 구할 수 있다는 사실을 산모에게 교육하고 납득시키기 위해서는 농촌 의사의 꾸준하고 적극적인 프로그램이 필요할 것이다. 
출산 중,
불과 몇 년 전만 해도 2차 도로는 거의 통행이 불가능했던 것을 기억하실 것입니다. 
시골 의사들은 백인과 유색인종으로 소수였고 아주 멀리 떨어져 있었습니다. 
여행 방식은 느리고 노출이 가득했습니다. 
종종 의사는 하루에 한두 번 전화를 걸었습니다. 
그가 소환되었을 때 그것은 대개 삶과 죽음의 문제였습니다. 
이러한 장애가 많이 제거되었음에도 불구하고 오늘날 시골 지역에서 우리는 여전히 같은 문제에 직면해 있습니다.

Dumas Drug Store - Natchez, Mississippi
The Dumas Drug Store located on Franklin St., was the anchor of the black business community in Natchez for several decades. Dr. A.W. Dumas, Sr., a well respected and admired Natchez physician, and his son, Dr. Albert W. Dumas, Jr., located their medical offices above the drug store. Another son, Michael Dumas, operated the drug store for 44 years. I'm not sure when the drug store opened or closed. It's possible that it opened in the mid 1930s. Natchez, Mississippi. 7.7.2013.
