Power Application:
Lets look at how the power is applied through the fishing rod. In general, speycasters can be categorised into two groups - casters that push the rod forward or casters that pull the rod forward. In my teaching experience the 'pushers' are in the majority, and the 'pullers' are certainly in the minority. The most common comment I make to my pupils is 'use more bottom hand'. During the casting cycle the rod is quite simply a spring and as such needs to be loaded and then quickly unloaded to release the optimum energy. If the caster 'pushes' forward with their top hand, they are not full realising the rod's potential energy. Be conscious of generating at least 50% of the forward delivery from the lower hand (I try and work on 70%-30% in favour of the bottom hand).
How the power is applied through the rod can directly affect the profile of the unfolding forward cast. If the caster powers the rod forward with a dominant top hand in an almost 'throwing' action, the front of the loop will tend to be rounded in profile and anywhere between slightly open to very open in depth. At the completion of the forward cast, hold your position for a moment to observe the position of the uppermost arm. If the arm is fully extended, it's a fair bet to say you have reduced the effectiveness of the rod spring by using a 'pushing' power application. If a more evenly balanced action is employed, the rod unloads quicker and higher and a much tighter loop is formed of the tip off the rod with a more pronounced point or 'V' shaped profile. This pointed loop profile transfers virtually all the forward energy in a straight-lined path towards the target. Again, take a moment to observe the finishing postion of your upper hand. If a more evenly balanced power application was used, the upper hand will not be fully straight, but have a distinct break or V at the elbow.
