Distance learning is off-campus, flexible learning that allows you follow identical programmes to campus based programmes, that you can study when it’s convenient for you. You can study at home, at work or whilst travelling. We provide you with professionally developed distance learning materials that are normally text based. You are supported by expert tutors via telephone, fax, post, e-mail and online via our Virtual Campus. The materials are developed specially to provide sequential learning with continual access to self-assessment and task based progress measurement. In this way you can pace yourself and seek support when you require it. In addition, distance learners are networked with each other to help, advise and support each other.
Distance learning is not a solitary process. It is an alternative study method and is extremely advantageous for students who do not live locally to a course provider or who want the freedom to study when they like and where they like within a structured but flexible, personal timetable.
Benefits of distance learning
It is flexible and allows you to select the best time to study to suit your own circumstances. It also provides you the flexibility to remain in full-time employment. You can continue to earn while you learn. According to the Labour Force Survey, on average, graduates can expect to earn £415,320 more than non-graduates over a lifetime. And did you know how easy it is to combine home and work life with distance learning? More than 95% of our students successfully balance full-time work with their studies.
You can study when and where it suits you best and you do not need to attend timetabled lectures or tutorials. If your circumstances require it we can help you to take a study break or defer your studies for a short while. We can also grant you assignment extensions due to home or work pressures.
As a distance learning student, you will be registered as a student of your chosen university or institution and enjoy the same status, privileges, benefits and final award as full-time students.
You can contact your academic tutor as often as you like. You can contact RDI for assistance and advice anytime. All of RDI's additional support is included in the normal cost of the programme. There are no additional charges for the support.
How to succeed
Motivation, time management and organisation on your part, combined with quality learning materials and tutor support are the secret of your success.
Motivation
Self improvement, higher qualifications and increased salary, and a better job are the obvious benefits. But it isn't just about money and jobs, it is also about feeling good about yourself by fulfilling your potential, and proving to yourself that you've got what it takes.
Time management and organisation
We strongly advise you to manage your study time carefully. You should clarify your aims, identify your strengths and weaknesses, consider the context in which you will be studying and generate a broad strategy for successfully covering the material and completing the course.
When reviewing the requirements of any particular module or unit, you should consider your situation, workload and home responsibilities in the relevant study period, then develop specific realistic plans for active study and writing.
You might also want to set yourself targets for:
The amount of time within which you will seek to complete a task;
The quantity of work you aim to do in a particular week;
Progress through the modules or units, bearing in mind your other responsibilities and tasks;
Progress on assignments.
You should plan and monitor what you do, and where necessary, act to improve the process, quantity and quality of your work. You should make decisions about the import!ance you will attach to tasks, the time you choose to allocate to them, and sequence in which you will do them.
People learn in different ways. So we do not expect that all students will approach their studies in the same way, in a way we prescribe, or in an over-planned manner. We will advise and assist you to manage your study and be disciplined about how you do it.
