The signal comes from one of the huge bass drums stational at each of five supporting columns. The enormous octagonal building is instantly silent. The attention of a thousand spectators centers on an elderly man, coming forth in solitary majesty.
He is bent with yours and the deep lines in his strong face tell of past courageous battles fought with enemy tribes. Thin white braids barely reach his once-broad shoulder. My eyes, too, are fixed on this striking figure resplendently attired in ceremonial garments, patient, and fancy trappings. His elaborately fringed scalp shirt and hip-length leggings show decades og wear. From his faded war bonnet, extending downward and touching the floor, are two great trails of eagle feathers. They must have been well earned by this prominent chieftain!
Speaking in his tribal dialect, his weak, cracky, and hesitant voice explains the requirements for the final war dance competition. His slurred and guttural tones are frequently interrupted by gestures as he shows that he himself has complete mastery of the war-dance art.
He turns to speak directly to a small group of middle-aged men who appear to be judges. Complete respect and admiration are vividly expressed in the shiny black eyes of young braves standing nearby.
Because i cannot understand the Crow language, I find this the perfect time to check my costume. Should I find it necessary to stop during a dance to retie a thong, I'd automatically be disqualified. While I carefully adjust my eagle bustle, I notice that very few of the costumes consist of real eagle feathers.
All the heavily beaded garments in my costumes are red and white. The white background is for the purity one should try to maintain in his life. The red in the designs reminds me of the blood shed in attempts to maintain the pureness of the great binding law which has governed the American Indian since the dawn of time. An arrow signifies protection. The mountain designs are the Wallowa Mountains in northeastern Oregon. Our people, the Nez Perces, once found protection in these mountains.
Four butterfly wings symbolize everlasting llife. Back to back, they form a diamond which is the medicine man's eye-wise and watchful. This complete design says that I am constantly being watched, that he may give em an everlasting life, should I deserve it.
While I watch the other dancers listen to their chief,I stroke my soft buckskin fringe. Soft as velvet, this extensive amount of white, flowing fringe symbolizes a waterfall, reminding me that I can always be washed clean.
I check the lustrous bells tightly strung around my calf. The two lower rows, with bells large as oranges, give a deep bass sound. They gaily harmonize with the six rows of smaller bells above them. These silver bells are the ring of life within me. Someday this ring will cease, and the pulse from the drum will go up to Tahmhnewes, the Great Spirit. I am taught that my daily living will determine the sound of the drumbeat.
Last of all, I adjust the owl feathers securely tied onto my headband. Because the owl is considered wise, I've placed his feathers near my brain. They awaken me to be observant, wise, and patient.
When I dance, the judges read my costume and know the meaning of each bead and feather.
Through an interpreter I am told that I will perform with the boys between sixteen and twenty years of age. What competition! I'm told the dancers have been carefully examined and some eliminated on previous nights.
Listen! feom somewhere a drum beats a slow and constant boom-boom-boom-boom. A choir of male singers bursts forth with shrieking war sried. A mystic chant cuts through this frenzy
