Lakers are racing against time
What should the struggling Lakers do to compete now and in the future?

While the Lakers are in a race against five other West teams for two spots, the more troubling truth is that they find themselves in a race against time.
Time is the commodity the Lakers lack most right now. Time to heal. Time to replenish a dreadful bench. Time to fight off the rest of the playoff hopefuls out West and stave off one of the biggest busts in NBA history.
With a 16-21 record one month ahead of the trade deadline, time is running out for the Lakers. And not just for this season. The issues plaguing the Lakers now have much wider implications beyond 2012-13.
Let's go over them one by one.
The Lakers have only a 27.1 percent chance of making the playoffs
According to Hollinger's Playoff Odds, the Lakers have about a 1-in-4 chance of making the playoffs this season. How did it come to that conclusion? Using the Lakers' point differential (a stronger indicator of true talent than record) and their remaining strength of schedule, the Lakers made the playoffs only 27.1 percent of the time in 5,000 simulations.
In other words, according to this measure, the Lakers have just about the same odds of making the playoffs as ... Lakers fans better go find a nearby supply of smelling salts ... Dwight Howard making his next two free throws consecutively. Those aren't good odds, obviously, but it also doesn't mean that the Lakers are doomed. If we pencil in the Rockets as the seventh seed (not a lock, by the way), the Lakers are fighting the 21-19 Jazz and 20-17 Blazers for the final spot, not to mention the Timberwolves and the Mavericks, who each have the same number of wins as the Lakers.
The Lakers' situation is dire, and yet those odds don't account for the following fact.
The Lakers are hurt badly and need bodies
As if having Pau Gasol out indefinitely due to a recent concussion wasn't bad enough, the Lakers found out on Friday night that Jordan Hill, their lone legitimate source of young legs off the bench, is expected to miss the rest of the season with his hip injury. That's on top of Steve Blake's abdominal strain that has sidelined him for the past month and could table him into February. The Lakers targeted mid-January for Blake's return, but here we are, and there are no signs of Blake returning to the court anytime soon. He recently took shooting drills, but Mike D'Antoni wouldn't put a timetable on his return on Monday.
The Lakers' bench was already depleted with no semblance of a reliable shot creator off the bench, but now they've lost their top big man and their fragile stars need a strong fleet of reserves more than ever. The only trouble is ...
Gasol and Hill were their only trade chips, and their values have vanished
Aside from the very real and troubling long-term effects of head injuries, JaVale McGee's inadvertent elbow to Gasol's nose nine days ago couldn't have happened at a worse time. Gasol had just returned from missing time with knee tendinitis and was desperately trying to establish chemistry next to three other Hall of Famers. Six separate tests over nine days haven't cleared Gasol to play.
But not only did Gasol's injury hurt the Lakers' ability to win games, it also killed almost any chance that they could flip him before the deadline and bring in real help. Counting out Hill after hip surgery, trading Gasol remained the Lakers' greatest hope that they could boost their paper-thin depth and get appreciably younger. All things considered, forfeiting that "asset" may be worse than losing his on-court abilities.
And Gasol's stock was already in a nosedive. The 32-year-old's PER tumbled from 20.5 last season to a slightly below-average mark of 14.8; only Kevin Love has seen a greater decline since last season among qualified players. On top of that is his hefty contract that pays him $19.3 million next season and what's left of his $19 million this season.
Gasol's value on the trade market has fallen to the point that when asked to assess the Lakers' situation, a rival GM chuckled before saying, "What are they going to do, trade Pau?" That incredulous sentiment echoes what another exec told our own Marc Stein in Reno, Nev. No two ways around it: Gasol's injury is a double-whammy.
Dwight Howard isn't a lock to sign an extension
When Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak swung a deal for Howard without giving up Gasol, the move was met with a deafening chorus of approval and admiration. Not only did the Lakers bring in a top-three talent in the game, but they also gained the inside track on securing his services for the long term after he becomes a free agent after the season. After all, nobody leaves the Lakers, right?
That's not a no-brainer assumption anymore. If the Lakers continue to slide and miss the playoffs, the case for Howard to stay in LakerLand takes a severe blow, especially if the finger-pointing has already begun. Sure, the Lakers haven't lost a big-name free agent that they wanted, but they've never experienced a letdown as colossal as this one. The Lakers' locker room may not be as dysfunctional as the end of the Kobe-Shaq days, but at least those teams won more than they lost.
If Howard walks, the Lakers won't have a sign-and-trade at their disposal this upcoming summer under a new rule in the CBA, because they would still likely be over the tax apron. In other words, they couldn't reel in imminent free agents Josh Smith or Andrew Bynum even if they wanted to.
The Lakers are likely to lose their 2013 first-round draft pick to Phoenix
If the Lakers were to build an ideal trade package to appeal to another team, it would have probably started with Gasol, Hill and their 2013 first-rounder. But here's the problem: all three of those assets may be bankrupt.
If the Lakers miss the playoffs, they no longer own the rights to their first-round pick as part of the trade agreement that netted them Nash, since it would only go to Phoenix if the Lakers miss the playoffs. Simply put, if the Lakers hit the lottery, the Suns hit the jackpot. But if the Lakers make the postseason (bear with me here), that pick will likely go to the Cavaliers as a swap from the Ramon Sessions deal last season. Had the Lakers not done the Nash trade, the Lakers would have been able to keep that lottery pick in the event that they miss the playoffs. Not anymore.
Either way, the Lakers will be without a first-round pick in the 2013 draft to recover from their 2012-13 season that looks all but lost. Salt, meet wound.
Michael Jordan has one more title than Kobe Bryant
This fact can't be ignored when sizing up the Lakers. Bryant is 34 years old with more than 50,000 minutes on his NBA odometer (including the postseason), and believe it or not, he won't be playing at this level forever. He's made it abundantly clear that he wants to win another championship before he hangs it up for good. Another title, by the way, would tie Jordan's historic total of six.
If the Lakers don't win a title this season, then they better find a way to increase their chances next season. But how do they do that when all their trade assets have been all but extinguished? That's a tough question for Kupchak to answer, and Bryant's unrivaled determination won't make it easier on his conscience if the Lakers face-plant this season and beyond.
And that's before we consider that Nash is still looking for title No. 1 and will be turning 40 at the end of his three-year contract. Father time will catch up sooner rather than later.
So with all things considered, it's no secret that the Lakers are in a tight spot with no immediate solution in sight. They'd presumably like to make a deal to rescue their situation, but their cupboard is just about empty.
So what do the Lakers do?
Here are the options.
1. Stay put and hope for the best
This seems like the most likely scenario, but it's probably also the least promising. Here's a startling stat: The Lakers' "ideal" lineup with Nash, Bryant, Metta World Peace, Gasol and Howard has only appeared in nine of the team's 37 games and just 6 percent of the team's overall minutes. By comparison, the Thunder's starting lineup has been on court for a league-leading 33 percent of the team's overall minutes this season while taking the floor in 36 of Oklahoma City's 38 games this season.
What's the difference? Well, one team is old and the other is not. And considering the Lakers' age, eventually getting all their stars on the floor isn't a given. While some of those injuries are due to pure bad luck (Gasol's latest concussion is an example), the Lakers knew they wouldn't be exactly spring chickens when they brought Nash and an All-Star center recovering from back surgery on board.
The Lakers can hang their hat on the fact that the "ideal" lineup above has outscored opponents by 8.2 points per 48 minutes this season, but they've played together for only 117 minutes, the equivalent of about two and a half games, and Gasol hasn't even returned to the court yet. And then there's this: Six of the Lakers' next seven games are against winning teams, including the Heat and the Thunder. The light at the end of the tunnel isn't exactly bright.
If they ride it out, they risk riding Howard out of town, too.
2. Trade Dwight Howard
There's a host of reasons why the Lakers won't trade their next potential foundational piece, but he's easily their most tradeable asset. It makes sense on the fundamental level that the Lakers already have a center in Gasol and they probably can't move him unless they trade him at 10 cents on the dollar. So moving Howard would be the only way to drastically shake up the roster without breaking up the Nash-Bryant-Gasol core.
Though his back is a legitimate concern, it probably wouldn't be enough to scare away potential suitors in Dallas and Houston, two teams that could carve out the requisite cap space to get a deal done. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban publicly squashed any rumors that he'd trade Dirk Nowitzki last week, but that was before he publicly declared that the "the Bank of Cuban is open."
A Dallas-Los Angeles hookup is an intriguing one beyond the obvious fact that it would lead to a nostalgic Nash-Nowitzki reunion. A swap based on Dwight-for-Dirk would make some basketball sense in a vacuum, though it's hard to imagine the Mavericks dealing their beloved superstar. But you're telling me this deal wouldn't at least ignite some chatter? These are two desperate franchises with ravenous fan bases in equally enormous markets. It's unlikely for sentimental reasons, but stranger things have happened.
3. Trade Kobe Bryant
Yeah, never mind.
4. Trade Steve Nash
Again, what options do the Lakers have? If they decide that Howard is the heir apparent to Bryant's throne in Los Angeles, they have to build a winner now or else they risk losing the center to a stronger contender. Nash might be a primary reason why they selected D'Antoni as head coach, but the Lakers are stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to their available moves.
Nash will be guaranteed another $19 million over the next two seasons through age 40, so the Lakers won't be able to ask for the moon in return. But they're desperately lacking young talent in their backcourt, and Nash may be their only option to remedy that dire situation. How dire is their point guard situation? To illustrate, the Lakers are minus-3.6 points per 100 possessions when Darius Morris plays next to the star-studded Bryant-World Peace-Gasol-Howard quartet. That's the Lakers' most-used lineup this season.
The Lakers need healthy bodies. And with a tough schedule on the horizon and the trade deadline fast approaching, the pressure to make a move is greater than ever. Glance at their upcoming schedule, and it's not difficult to imagine the Lakers falling all the way to 17-27 after playing the Thunder on Jan. 27 on national television. What then? Time is running out, and so are the Lakers' options.

번역 감사해요.^^ 어제 히트에 지긴 했지만 현재 레이커스 이 글이 나왔을 때보단 훨씬 나아졌어요. 힐-가솔-하워드가 다 빠졌던 세경기는 아마 만약 레이커스가 클리퍼스정도 하고있었더라도 다 져도 이상할거 없는 손실이었죠. 생각치도 못한 클락의 등장으로 올시즌들어 가장 좋은 스타팅 조합을 찾아냈고 가솔이 백업센터로 나왔을 때 오펜스에서 얼마나 위력적일 수 있는지 어제 경기에서 보여줬죠. 물론 하워드랑 코트에 같이 있는 자체가 팀에 마이너스라는 것을 재확인 시켜준거도 있습니다만.. 팀이 밸런스를 찾으면 7,8연승 달려도 사실 이상할거 없는 스타라인업이기에 플옵가능성은 아직 높다고 봅니다. 문제는 역시 시간이죠@,@;;
가솔이 백업센터롤 그리고 바이넘이 그랬던 것처럼 클러치타임에 많이 제외될 수 있음을 받아드린다면 이 팀이 다시 무서워 질 수 있을거 같습니다;; 블레이크가 돌아와서 듀혼보다 게임을 잘 풀어주고 수비를 조금 더 잘 해 준다면 (수비면에선 정말 도찐개찐이겠지만,,,) 또 플러스가 되겠죠;; 만약 트레이드로 급처방을 내리자면 닉스라인업에 연착륙 시도중인 아마레가 좋을텐데,, 포스트에서 스킬풀한 득점원이 부족한 닉스가 이를 원할지는 모르겠습니다;;
