With Smith gone, Drummond is starting to round into his dominating form.
News and Notes

In Detroit, the concept of "addition by subtraction" has been a hot topic in the wake of the Pistons' 5-0 record since waiving Josh Smith. The quality of Detroit's opposition during the surge hasn't been great, but that hardly detracts from the turnaround of a team that won just five of its first 28 games. The Pistons have won three times on the road during the streak, and each of the five victories has been by 10 points or more. The average post-Smith margin of victory has been 18.2 points.
As Kevin Pelton suggested, this small sample revival can be at least partially attributed to factors other than Smith's departure. Yet, the difference has been almost unbelievable. When looking at just the last five games of each team across the league, the Pistons rank second in efficiency on both ends of the court, and first in net efficiency.
As you'd expect, the key to Detroit's offensive improvement has been the redistribution of possessions since Smith left. As Stan Van Gundy noted at the time he made the stunning decision to waive Smith, the team's offense was dominated by the low-efficiency shooter when he was on the floor. Smith's usage rate led the team among rotation players, and his assist rate was on par with many guards. According to SportVu, only point guard Brandon Jennings had more total touches. Smith's offensive rating (94.6) was the worst among rotation players, and his true shooting percentage was a good seven percent lower than anyone else.
Given that formula for disaster, it was a near-certainty that Detroit's offense would improve. It's not rocket science: You take away a high volume of possessions played at one of the lowest levels of efficiency in the league, then you're going to do better no matter who ends up filling in the usage gap. Jennings' usage rate has shot up to 29 percent since Smith left, and his true shooting percentage of 67.8 percent has been a key driver of Detroit's recent success. Meanwhile, Jodie Meeks has been lights-out since returning from injury, and Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond have been more effective on both ends of the court in lieu of their bad fit with Smith.
The situation is reminiscent to last year's emergence of the Toronto Raptors after the departure of Rudy Gay. The Raptors in general, and point guard Kyle Lowry in particular, took off after Gay's many bad possessions were spread through the rest of the roster, and the primary decision-making went Lowry's way. As it is with the Pistons, possession distribution didn't explain everything. As noted, the defensive turnaround in Detroit has been even more stark than the offensive uptick. A similar thing happened in Toronto -- an across-the-board surge that was impossible to predict statistically from the simple removal of one high-usage player.
During the post-merger era, which coincides with the years for which we can calculate usage rate, there have been 33 players who played qualifying minutes, had a season usage rate of 25 percent or higher and changed teams during the season. As a group, the teams jettisoning these players had an aggregate .457 winning percentage, which translates to 37.5 wins per 82 games. Those teams collectively posted a .475 winning percentage after the drastic move, winning 39 of 82 games. It's not a huge difference, but it's telling. After all, we're talking about transactions involving a team getting rid of one its foundation players.
The flip side of the scenario is the ultimate upside from shaking up your core. After all, you need stars to win a title. Perhaps you can get better by removing a disgruntled or inefficient core player, but in most cases that means giving more time and possessions to non-star players. Unless you're able to deal for a more effective star in return, you're limiting your ceiling, right? That might be the case. Not one of the 33 teams in question won a title during the five-year timeframe following the season in which they got rid of a foundation player. A couple of have made the Finals, but that's it. No champions on the list.
According to the data in those post-transaction, five-year windows, those teams have missed the playoffs or lost in the first round 76 percent of the time. So, addition by subtraction does appear to have a kind of placebo effect, but it's one with margins small enough that simple regression to the mean might be the explanation. But the kind of shakeup that results in these scenarios is almost always symptomatic of larger problems. In other words, addition by subtraction can only take you so far.
• The lingering question for me about the three-way trade that went down Monday: What's next for the Knicks? As Pelton noted, Phil Jackson can get New York all the way below the tax line with more pruning. He has Amar'e Stoudemire ($23.4 million) and Andrea Bargnani ($11.5 million) on expiring deals.
The only team I could conceive acquiring Stoudemire is the Sixers because of their large chunk of available cap space. For that to happen, the Knicks would have to offer the Sixers a future asset of value, which is the rub.
However, New York did acquire an extra first-rounder in Monday's swap. If the Sixers were to take on Stoudemire, it could create a situation where three veterans on the Philly roster (Stoudemire, Jason Richardson and Andrei Kirilenko) end up getting waived. Each of them, especially Stoudemire, could impact the postseason depending on where they land post-Philadelphia.
As for Bargnani, the Philly scenario might work as well, but it would get more interesting if he could get back on the court and stay there. But the overriding question is how much does Jackson value getting under the tax and avoiding possible future repeater status? With wins few and far between for the Knicks, this is Phil's show now.
• On Monday, the Bulls' four primary big men all played major minutes: Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah played 34 minutes apiece, while Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic both logged 27. By definition, there are 96 minutes to be distributed at the two big-man spots, so that total of 122 means someone played a fair bit out of position. Turns out that someone was Mirotic, who played all of his minutes at small forward alongside the various combinations of Chicago's other bigs. The Bulls played without starting 3 Mike Dunleavy Jr., which freed up those minutes.
Mirotic, who was just named the rookie of the month for December, has played so well that Tom Thibodeau might be forced to remain creative with his lineups to give all of his big men enough court time. When Mirotic shared the floor with Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, Gasol and Noah on Monday against Houston, the Bulls outscored the Rockets by 14 points in five minutes. The Mirotic-at-3 option was one Thibodeau downplayed before the season, and it's only been the last couple of games that it's come to pass. So far, the Bulls have outscored opponents by 14 points per 100 possessions with Mirotic playing 3.
• With Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant still lacking the minimum number of games to qualify for the scoring leaderboard, the third-leading scorer in the NBA is Carmelo Anthony at 23.9 PPG. If that were to hold up, it would be the lowest average for the league's third-leading scorer in a full season since Neil Johnston in 1956-57. Meanwhile, James Harden leads the league at 26.97 PPG, though Westbrook would be just ahead of him if he qualified. Either way, it would be the lowest figure for a league leader in a non-strike season since George Gervin in 1977-78. The league's trend toward scoring balance continues.
@Duncan&Kidd
