5. Celadon Pottery
For hundreds of years, Korea has had a reputation for producing very fine ceramics. Perhaps the best known is Celadon pottery, produced during the time of the Koryo Kingdom, which lasted from 918~ 1392 A.D.
Celadon pottery was a beautiful bluish-green color. It is inlaid with designs of black and white made by the use of white clay and clay rich in iron, which turned black during the firing process. Cranes and clouds were frequently featured in the designs.
No one knows for sure how this particular bluish-green colored glaze was made. Some people think that plant leaves were used in the process. Many craftsmen are still experimenting and trying to find out.
One of the special characteristics of the glaze is that the unique color does not fade with time. The color is as vibrant today as when it was produced hundreds of years ago. Today Koryo Celadon pottery items are regarded as priceless works of art.
