01
M: Honey, you look very excited today! What’s up?
W: Dad, I’m going to the amusement park tomorrow.
M: Wow! What rides do you want to go on the most?
W: I can’t wait to ride the roller coaster.
02
W: Do you have an extra black pen?
M: Wait a minute. [Pause] No, I don’t have one right now. Why?
W: I need to fill out this form, but all I have is a blue one.
M: Well, this form says either black or blue ink is okay.
03
M: Could I have everyone’s attention, please? Before opening the restaurant for business today, I’d like to make an announcement. Ever since Laura Kim, the chef in charge of Korean food, left the restaurant last month, we’ve been looking for someone new to replace her. Nine chefs applied for the position. We have screened each of them carefully during the past two weeks, and we’ve finally picked the person who we believe to be the most qualified. I’d like to
introduce Kevin Jung, our new chef for Korean food. He studied Korean cuisine at a prestigious cooking school in Seoul, and he has years of experience working at five-star hotels. From today, he’s going to be in charge of Korean food at our restaurant. Please give Kevin a warm welcome.
04
W: Taylor, I’m surprised to see that you’ve got a few gray hairs.
M: Are you kidding me? I’m just a high school student.
W: Look at yourself in the mirror. Can you see them back there?
M: Oh, my god! Should I dye my hair black
W: I don’t think it’s a good idea. It could damage your hair.
M: What about pulling out all the gray hairs?
W: Well, that would take too much time and it’s not a practical solution.
M: Then, what should I do?
W: Too much stress can turn your hair gray. So try to reduce your stress!
M: You’e right. I’l make an effort to live a stress-free life.
05
M: Good afternoon. What can I do for you, ma’am?
W: Can I have this checked, please?
M: Okay. What seems to be the problem?
W: I’m not sure, but I’m afraid a strange noise is coming from the engine.
M: Well, let me have a look at it.
W: Do you think it might be a serious problem?
M: I’m not sure now, but it might cause an unexpected breakdown sometime.
W: Can you have this fixed by tonight?
M: It depends on what the trouble is. I’ll give you a call around 5 o’clock.
W: What if it cannot be fixed by tonight? I have to drive to the airport tomorrow morning.
M: I’ll do my best to fix it as soon as possible.
W: Thank you very much.
06
M: Cathy, how are the classroom decorations coming along?
W: I did just as you asked. I hung the national flag above the center of the blackboard.
M: Good job. Did you attach a round wall clock to the left of the flag?
W: Round wall clocks were sold out, so I attached a square one instead.
M: Okay. What about the classroom motto “Carpe Diem?”
W: I just put it on the right of the flag as you said!
M: Alright. Everything is perfect.
W: Yeah, but you didn’t mention anything about the class bulletin board, so I just attached it to the right of the blackboard.
M: Oh, I forgot about it. But I like what you did very much.
W: And one more thing. I put a pencil holder on the teacher’s table for your convenience.
M: Really? Thanks a lot.
07
M: Hey, are you still working?
W: Yeah, the boss wants this report done by tomorrow morning.
M: Are you almost done?
W: Yes. Now I’m just putting the final touches on it.
M: By the way, isn’t it too hot in here?
W: I know, but the air conditioner isn’t working.
M: Why didn’t you call the repair shop
W: As you know, I was busy all day long working on this report. Can you do that for me?
M: Okay, no problem. Oh, what are these documents?
W: I need to photocopy them. They’re for the presentation tomorrow.
M: Then I’ll do that for you, too.
W: That’s okay. I can take care of them, Raymond.

[Cell phone rings.]
W: Hello, Andy! This is Pamela speaking.
M: Oh, Pamela. How have you been?
W: I’m having a lot of fun these days. How about you?
M: Busy. I recently started a new science project with Professor Parker and a few other graduate colleagues.
W: Poor boy. Hey, do you have some time on Wednesday?
M: Wednesday? What time?
W: Eight in the evening. I’ throwing a party and I want to invite you there.
M: I’m sorry, but I can’t go. I have other plans. Professor Parker insisted that I analyze research data together with him.
W: Come on. You need to take a break. Tom, Susan, and Jackson will be there and I told them that you would be coming as well.
M: No way! I already told the professor that I would work with him.
W: Alright. It sounds like you have no choice.
09
W: Do you need any help, sir?
M: Yes, I’m looking for a notebook at a reasonable price.
W: Have you thought about a specific brand?
M: No. Could you recommend some?
W: How about this wide screen notebook? It costs 1,800 dollars and has a three-year warranty.
M: Is there anything cheaper?
W: Of course there is. This one from TIG is 1,280 dollars
with similar functions and a wide screen.
M: That sounds pretty good. How much is this blue one? The design looks so sophisticated!
W: That’s the new model which is the most expensive notebook here. It has the largest memory and a system speed that’s double most current systems. The actual price is 2,500 dollars, but here at Best Computers we can give you a 15% discount.
M: I don’t think I can afford that. I’ll buy the notebook from TIG. Is there a 15% discount for that, too?
W: I’m sorry, but the discount is only available for the new models. How would you like to pay? We accept cash, check, and credit cards.
10
W: Hello. I’m Kathy Lee, the principal of this high school. Are you in charge of the fire drill today?
M: Yes, ma’am. I’m James Joy of the Louis Fire Station.
W: When does the drill start and how long will it take?
M: It’ll begin at two o’clock when the bell goes off and continue for about half an hour.
W: I see. Any drill procedures for the students to follow?
M: Yes. When the bell goes off, students should leave their classrooms immediately and exit the building in an orderly manner.
W: Okay. But I’m wondering where they should go after leaving the building.
M: All students are expected to gather on the playground for a special program of the drill.
W: A special program? What is it?
M: Fire fighters will set a real fire and demonstrate the dangers of fire to students.
W: Great! But please make sure that nobody gets hurt.
11
W: I’d like to mention a few things about the Eleventh Annual School Festival. It will start on October 3rd and last for seven days, which makes it two days longer than last year. More than thirty school clubs will be representing themselves at the festival, and the popular rock band Road Music will perform on the opening day. On the second day, the highly anticipated fashion show will be held on a special outdoor stage on the school ground. The marathon race, which is always the most popular event, is going to be held on the last day of the festival. Can you guess how many students attended the festival last year? More than fifteen hundred students showed up, which accounted for two thirds of the total students enrolled at our school. I hope this year every student will visit the festival and have a wonderful time.
12
M: How about taking a trip to Jeju Island this weekend?
W: That sounds great! I’ve heard there are some ferries sailing from Mokpo to Jeju.
M: You’re right. Look at this ferry schedule I found on the Internet. We have our choice of five different vessels.
W: Okay, the earliest we can depart is Thursday afternoon since my last class finishes at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning.
M: Then what about taking the Pink Dolphin? It departs daily at 2 p.m.
W: That’s true, but isn’t it a bit expensive compared to the others?
M: Well then, how about the Sea Star? It’s the cheapest of the five and we could leave Friday morning.
W: Yeah, but I’d prefer to leave on Thursday rather than wait till Friday.
M: I agree. We could take the Queen Mary at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
W: I’m not sure that I’d be able to make it in time since my last class finishes at 10 a.m. If there’s a lot of traffic on the way to the terminal, I might miss the boat.
M: Well then, I guess we really only have one option.
13
W: Excuse me. Can I try on a pair of these pants that are on display?
M: Yes. What size would you like?
W: A size 4. I’d like to try on the blue ones, too.
M: Sorry, but we only have the black ones in a size 4.
W: Then can I try on a blue pair in a size 5?
M: Yes. Here you are. The fitting room is behind the mirror.
W: I think someone is in the fitting room right now.
M: Right. As soon as she comes out, you can go into the room and try them on.
W: Thanks. Are these pants washable?
M: Yes, but it’d be better if you get them dry-cleaned once.
W: Why is that?
M: I’d say it stabilizes the fabric and stitches.
14
[Honk]
M: Jane, I’m here.
W: Wow, did you buy a new car? How beautiful!
M: No, this is a rental car. Mine is in the repair shop now.
W: Did your car break down?
M: No, it didn’t.
W: Then can you tell me what happened?
M: When I was waiting at a traffic light, a guy hit me in the back.
W: Oh, were you hurt from the accident?
M: No. It was just a fender bender.
W: You were lucky.
M: But it’ll take a couple of days to repair the damage.
W: I see. That’ why you rented this car.
15
M: Today is Sunday, but James has been doing some work for several hours in his room because he has an important business meeting tomorrow. After a while, he goes to the living room to have a rest. In the living room, he sees that his daughter, Paula, is watching an animation. He knows her final exams begin tomorrow. When she did terribly on her midterm exams two months ago, she promised him that she would do her best next time. Now he doesn’t think she will keep her promise. Actually, what James wants is not just for her to get good grades. He wants her to do her best in whatever she does. In this situation, what would James most likely say to his daughter, Paula?
James: I want you to try your best in every case.
16 ~ 17
W: Today I’d like to talk about what we can do if we see someone else being bullied. In many places some young people are often bullied for no particular reason. Sometimes they are bullied just because they are different in some way. But bullying is unacceptable behavior. It makes the person being bullied feel afraid or uncomfortable. To help you better understand bullying, I’ll provide some examples. People can be bullied by being called names, being excluded from activities, being verbally threatened, having personal property stolen or destroyed, being hit or kicked, and being made to do things against their will. Then, how should we deal with bullying behavior? If you see someone else being bullied, you should always try to stop it. If you do nothing, your actions say that bullying is okay with you. It’s always best to treat others the way you would like to be treated. You should show the bully
that you think their behavior is stupid and mean. Also, convince the person being bullied to tell an adult they can trust.
