NYU Steinhardt's Summer Studio Art programs and classes provide opportunities for both emerging and mature artists to develop their artistic practice within a critical dialogue around issues in contemporary art. The M.A. in Studio Art Summer Program's three-summer curriculum enables students to engage in six weeks of full-time intensive study each summer. This interdisciplinary program combines individual and group critiques with weekly visiting artist/curator lectures, studio space, and courses in the disciplines of your choice. Students may choose to spend Summer 2011 in New York or Venice, Italy. The Advanced Certificate in Studio Art is a 12-credit program of study, which combines intensive contemporary art practice with critical and cultural theory. Private and semi-private studio space is available to Certificate students during the summer session only. Students may apply as either Post Baccalaureate or Post Masters candidates, and may choose to spend Summer 2011 in New York or Venice, Italy. New York participants will have access to 7 floors of shops, labs, galleries, and studios in the heart of the East Village, as well as research facilities and dormitory housing at NYU. Weekly visiting artists’ lectures, studio critique classes, and exhibitions in our galleries. Study with the same outstanding faculty who teach in our highly acclaimed academic year programs: Summer Director Lyle Ashton Harris, renowned painters John Torreano, Maureen Gallace, Michael St. John, Jason Tomme, and Keith Mayerson, sculptor Ian Cooper, photographers Gerald Pryor and Hiroshi Sunairi, video artist Ronnie Bass, ceramicist Shida Kuo, and printmaker Noah Breuer, as well as critics David Rimanelli and Kirby Gookin, and Department Chair Nancy Barton. Studio disciplines and facilities include: Painting and Drawing You may also enroll in individual classes as a non-degree student. Venice participants do serious creative studio work in the areas of painting and drawing within a rich artistic milieu. Large open studios provide a unique and stimulating work environment where ongoing dialogue and ideas are freely exchanged. The faculty includes Maurizio Pellegrin and David Darts, as well as artists, critics, historians, and theorists from respective fields in Italy, Europe, and elsewhere.
