Israel to free Palestinian prisoners
In a move intended to shore up support for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Israel will free 199 Palestinian prisoners. Among those to be released is a militant who has served 32 years for planting a bomb. The lot of the odd 9,000 Palestinians held in Israeli jails is a thorny issue. Abbas, a moderate, is under fire over the lack of progress in peace talks with Israel. The list of Palestinians to be released includes prisoners jailed for shootings, planting explosives, and having financial links to Hezbollah. While the Israeli parliament voted for the release, those opposed suggest it will undermine talks to free an Israeli soldier held in the Hamas controlled Gaza Strip.

Politics weigh in on space exploration
Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama says if elected he will augment NASA’s budget with an extra $2 billion. But presumptive Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain said Obama has flip–flopped on the issue, and can’t be trusted to maintain America’s advantage in space. NASA’s aging shuttle fleet is scheduled to be retired in 2010, and pricey new Constellation spacecraft won’t be ready until 2015, at the earliest. In that 5-year span NASA is to rely on Russian Soyuz rockets for missions to the largely U.S.-funded international space station. Adding to the uncertainty, as the crisis in Georgia sours U.S.- Russia relations, Washington-Moscow cooperation on space exploration may be in jeopardy.
