孔子曰," 不知命, 無以爲君子也, 不知禮, 無以立也, 不知言, 無以知人也." 자왈, 불지명, 무이위군자야, 불지례, 무이립야, 불지언, 무이지인야.
공자왈. "천명을 알지 못하면 군자가 될 수 없고, 예를 알지 못하면 설 수 없으며, 말을 알지 못하면 사람을 알 수 없다."
The Master said, "Without recognizing the ordinances of Heaven, it is impossible to be a superior man. "Without an acquaintance with the rules of Propriety, it is impossible for the character to be established. "Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know men."
子張曰, "士見危致命, 見得思義, 祭思敬, 喪思哀, 其可已矣.” 사견위치명, 견득사의, 제사경, 상사애, 기가이의
자장이 말히길."선비는 위태로움을 보면 목숨을 바치고, 이득을 보면 의리를 생각하며, 제사에는 공경해야 할 것을 생각하며, 상에는 슬픔을 생각한다. 이 정도면 된다."
Tsze-chang said, "The scholar, trained for public duty, seeing threatening danger, is prepared to sacrifice his life. When the opportunity of gain is presented to him, he thinks of righteousness. In sacrificing, his thoughts are reverential. In mourning, his thoughts are about the grief which he should feel. Such a man commands our approbation indeed.
子曰, “不降其志, 不辱其身, 伯夷 叔齊與!” 자왈, 불강기지, 불욕기신, 백이 숙제여
공자왈, "자기 뜻을 굽히지 않고, 자기 몸을 욕되이 하지 않는 사람은 백이와 숙제일 것이다."
The Master said, "Refusing to surrender their will, or to submit to any taint in their persons ; such, I think, were Po-i and shu-chi."
子曰, “性相近也, 習相遠也.” 자왈 "성상근야, 습상원야."
공자 왈. "타고난 성품은 서로 가깝지만 습관에 따라 서로 멀어진다."
The Master said, "By nature, man are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wide apart."
孔子曰, “見善如不及, 見不善如探湯." 공자왈 "견선여불급, 견불선여탐탕"
공자 왈, "선을 보면 따르지 못할 듯이 노력하고, 선하지 않는 것을 보면 끓는 물을 더듬는 듯이 피해야 할것이다."
Confucius said, "Contemplating good, and pursuing it, as if they could not reach it; contemplating evil and shrinking it, as they would from thrusting the hand into boiling water."
子曰, “志士仁人, 無求生以害仁, 有殺身以成仁.” 자왈, 지사인인 무구생이해인 유살신이성인
공자 왈. "뜻 있는 선비와 어진 사람은 목숨을 구하려고 인을 해치지 않고, 자기 몸을 죽여서 인을 완성한다."
The Master said, "The determined scholar and the man of virtue will not seek to live at the expense of injuring their virtue. They will even sacrifice their lives lives to preserve their virtue complete.
子曰, “君子上達, 小人下達.” 자왈, "군자상달,소인하달."
공자 왈, 군자는 위로 통달하고, 소인은 아래로 통달한다.
The Master said, "The progress of the superior man is upwards; the progress of the mean man is downwards."
子曰, “君子和而不同, 小人同而不和.” 자왈, "군자 화이부동, 소인 동이불화"
공자 왈, "군자는 화합하되 부화뇌동하지 않고, 소인은 부화뇌동하되 화합는 하지 못한다."
The Master said, "The superior man is affable, but not adulatory; the mean man is adulatory, but not affable."
子曰, “出門如見大賓, 使民如承大祭. 己所不欲, 勿施於人. 在邦無怨, 在家無怨.” 자왈, "출문여견대빈, 사민여승대제. 기소불욕, 물시어인. 재방무원, 재가무원."
공자 왈, "문 밖에 나서거든 귀한 손님을 뵙는 듯이 하며, 백성을 대하기를 큰 제사 받들 듯이 하고, 자기가 하고 싶지 않은 것을 남에게 시키지 말아야 할 것이다. 이렇게 하면 나라에도 집에서도 원망이 없을 것이다."
The Master said, "It is, when you go abroad, to behave to every one as if you were receiving a great guest; to employ the people as if you were assisting at a great sacrifice; not to do others as you would not wish done to yourself; to have no murnmuring against you in the country, and non in the family."
子曰, “過猶不及.” 자왈, 과유불급
공자왈, 지나침은 모자람과 같은 것이다.
The master said, "To go beyond is as wrong as to fall short."
"席不正, 不坐." 석부정 부좌
자리가 바르지 않으면 앉지 않으셨다.
If his mat was not straight, he did not sit on it.
子曰, “後生可畏, 焉知來者之不如今也? 자왈 후생가외 언지래자지불여금야
공자 왈. "뒤에 태어난 후배들이 가히 두려울 만하다. 앞으로 그들이 지금의 우리만 못할 것이라고 어찌 알겠는가?"
Master said, "A youth is to be regarded with respect." "How do we know that his future will not be equal to our present?"
子曰, “知者不惑, 仁者不憂, 勇者不懼.” 자왈 지자 불혹 인자 불우 용자 불구
공자 왈. "지혜로운 사람은 미혹되지 않고, 인한 사람은 근심하지 않고, 용맹스런 사람은 두려워하지 않는다."
Master said, "The wise are free from perplexities; the virtuous from anxiety; and the bold from fear."

子曰, “不在其位, 不謀其政.” 자왈 부재기위 불모기정
공자 말씀하셨다. "그 지위에 있지 않은 사람은 그 자리의 정사를 논해서는 안 된다."
The Master said, "He who is not in any particular office has nothing to do with plans for the administration of its duties."
子曰, “學如不及, 猶恐失之.” 자왈, 학여불급 유공실지
공자 말씀하셨다. "학문을 하는 데는 아무리 해도 따라가지 못하는 듯이 하고, 오히려 배운 것을 잃어버릴까 걱정해야 한다."
The Master said, "Learn as if you could not reach your object, and were always fearing also lest you should lose it."
子曰, “三人行, 必有我師焉, 擇其善者而從之, 其不善者而改之.” 자왈, 삼인행, 필유아사언, 택기선자이종지, 기불선자이개지.
공자 말씀하셨다. "세 사람이 가면 그 가운데 반드시 나의 스승이 될만한 이가있다. 그 중에 선한 것을 가려서 본받고, 선하지 않은 것을 고쳐야한다."
The Master said, "when I walk along with two others, they may serve me as my teachers. I will select their good qualities and follow them, their bad qualities and avoid them."
子曰, “知之者 不如 好之者, 好之者 不如 樂之者.” 자왈, 지지자 불여호지자, 호지자 불여낙지자
공자 말씀하셨다. "아는 것은 좋아하는 것보다 못하고, 좋아하는 것은 즐기는 것보다 못하다."
The Master said, "They who know the truth are not equal to those who love it, and they who love it are not equal to those who delight in it."
子曰, “知者樂水, 仁者樂山. 知者動, 仁者靜. 知者樂, 仁者壽.” 자왈, 지자요수, 인자 요산. 지자동, 인자정. 지자요, 인자수.
공자 말씀하셨다. "지혜로운 사람은 물을 좋아하고, 어진 사람은 산을 즐긴다. 지혜로운 사람은 동적이고, 어진 사람은 정적이며, 지혜로운 사람은 즐겁게 살고, 어진 사람은 오래 산다."
The Master said, "The wise find pleasure in water; the virtuous find pleasure in mountain. The wise are active; the virtuous are tranquil. The wise are joyful; the virtuous are long-lived."
子曰, “老者安之, 朋友信之, 少者懷之.” 자왈 "로자안지 붕우신지 소자회지"
공자 왈, "노인을 편안히 해주며, 벗들을 미덥게 해주며, 어린이를 품어주기를 원하노라."
The Master said, "They are, in regard to the aged, to give them rest; in regard to friends, to show them sincerity; in regard to the young, to treat them tenderly."
子曰, “十室之邑, 必有忠信如丘者焉, 不如丘之好學也.” 자왈 "십실지읍, 필유충신여구자언 불여구지호학야"
공자 왈, "열 집이 사는 작은 마을에, 반드시 나처럼 충성스럽고 믿음직스런 사람이 있겠지만, 나처럼 배우기를 좋아하는 사람은 없을 것이다."
The Master said, "In a hamlet of ten families, there may be found one honorable and sincere as I am, but not so fond of learning."
子曰, “德不孤, 必有?.” 자왈, "덕불고 필유린"
공자가 말씀하셨다. "덕은 외롭지 않으니, 반드시 이웃이 있게 마련이다."
The Master said, "Virtue is not left to stand alone. He who practices it will have neighbors."
子曰, “人而不仁, 如禮何? 人而不仁, 如樂何?” 자왈 "인이불인, 여례하? 인이불인, 여악하?"
자왈. "사람이 인하지 아니하면, 예를 배워 무엇하며?, 사람이 인하지 아니하면, 악(樂)을 배워 무엇하리오?"
The Master said, "If a man be without the virtues proper to humanity, what has he to do with the rites of propriety? If a man be without the virtues proper to humanity, what has he to do with music?" 향후 영육회 여성단거리마라톤 샛별 팔뚝에 기록보이시나요? 오늘 여성마라토너들중에서 5위안에 들어간 김복숙선수!
子曰, “溫故而知新, 可以爲師矣.” 자왈, "온고이지신", "가이위사의".
공자가 말씀하셨다. "옛 것을 연구하여 새로운 것을 알아내면, 다른사람의 스승이 될 만하다."
The Master said, "If a man keeps cherishing his old knowlege, so as continually to be acquiring new, he may be a teacher of others."
子曰, “君子不器.” 자왈, "군자 불기"
공자가 말씀하셨다. "군자는 한 가지에만 쓰이는 그릇이 되어서는 안 된다."
The Master said, "The accomplished scholar is not a utensil."
子曰, “學而時習之, 不亦說乎?" "학이시습지,불역열호?" "有朋自遠方來, 不亦樂乎?" "유붕자원방래,불역낙호?" "人不知而不?, 不亦君子乎?” "인부지이불온,불역군자호?"
공자가 말씀하셨다. "배우고 때에 맞추어 익히면 또한 기쁘지 아니한가? 친한 벗(同志)이 먼 곳에서 찾아오면 또한 즐겁지 아니한가? 남이 알아주지 않아도 성내지 않으면 또한 군자가 아니겠는가?"
The Master said, "Is it not pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application?" "Is it not delightful to have friends coming from distant quarters?" "Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels not discomposure though men may take no note of him?"
