Esteemed historian Lee Ki-baik dies (원로 역사학자 이기백 교수 별세 )
Renowned historian Lee Ki-baik, widely known among Korean studies scholars for works translated into English such as "A New History of Korea" and "Korea Old and New: A History," died of natural causes early on Wednesday. He was 80.
Lee was born in 1924 and studied history at Waseda University in Japan. While in college, he was drafted to serve as a soldier in Manchuria during the Japanese colonial period.
In 1946, Lee enrolled at Seoul National University, majoring in history. He taught history at Ewha Womans University from 1958 to 1963 and at Sogang University from 1963 to 1985. There he formed what is called the "Sogang history school" together with Profs. Kil Hyeon-mo and Cha Ha-soon.
In 1985, he moved to Hallym University and retired after teaching there for 10 years. Lee, who had only bachelor"s degree, received an honorary doctoral degree from Sogang in 1985.
The historian published "A History of Korea"" in 1962 and then a revised version in 1967 titled "A New History of Korea," which was translated into English and other languages.
With a number of authoritative research works under his belt, Lee was one of the most influential history scholars in Korea.
영어로 번역출간된 국사신론과 한국사신론 등으로 국내 역사학자 사이에 유명한 원로 역사학자 이기백씨가 수요일 오전 노환으로 별세했다. 향년 80세.
그는 1924년생으로 일본 와세다 대학에서 역사학을 공부했다. 일제 식민지 시기에 대학에 다니던 그는 일본군에 징집되어 만주에서 복무했다.
1946년 그는 서울대학교 역사학과에 입학했다. 그는 1958-63년까지 이화여대와 1963-85년까지 서강대에서 역사학을 강의했다. 서강대 사학과 교수로 재직하면서 길현모, 차하순 등과 함께 ‘서강사학’의 전성시대를 열었다.
회갑을 넘긴 85년에 한림대 교수로 옮겨 95년 퇴직했다. 학사 출신인 고인은 1985년 서강대에서명예 문학박사를 받았다.
고인은 1962년 국사신론에 이어 이의 전면개정판인 한국사신론을 1967년 출판했는데 이 책은 영어를 비롯한 여러 외국어판으로 번역되었다.
