Unit 2. 연결어와 연결어구(Linking Words and Phrases)
<주요용어>
연결어(구) - 뒤에 명사(구)를 동반하는 어휘를 말함.
예) unlike me, despite the rain
독립절 - 홀로 문장이 될 수 있는 절을 말함.
예) Furthermore, he was highly educated.
종속절 - 주절에 딸린 절로서 홀로 문장이 될 수 없는 절을 말함.
예) *Although he was highly educated.
전치사 - 뒤에 명사(구)를 동반하는 어휘를 말함.
예) unlike me, despite the rain
앞에 나온 내용을 덧붙여 새로운 내용을 추가해 주는 연결어(구) :
furthermore(게다가), in addition(그밖에), in addition to(~외에), moreover(더욱), besides(~외에)
1. 내용을 추가할 때
가. 연결어(구) + 절
⚫ 연결어(구) 뒤에 절이 동반되는 경우
a) Furthermore (게다가)
ⅰ. Computer chess games are getting cheaper all the time. Furthermore, their quality is improving.
ⅱ. Computer chess games are getting cheaper all the time; furthermore, their quality is improving.
(컴퓨터 체스 게임은 지속적으로 저렴해지고 있다. 게다가, 품질도 향상되고 있다.)
(ⅰ)의 접속부사 furthermore는 (ⅱ)와 같이 세미콜론과 동반되어 사용되기도 한다.
b) Moreover (더욱)
ⅰ. Ellen saw that there was a man immediately behind her. Moreover, he was observing her strangely.
ⅱ. Ellen saw that there was a man immediately behind her; moreover, he was observing her strangely.
(엘렌은 바로 뒤에 한 남자가 있음을 알아챘다. 더욱이 그 남자는 그녀를 이상하게 관찰하고 있었다.)
moreover도 furthermore와 같이 세미콜론(;)과 동반되어 사용되기도 한다.
c) In addition (그밖에)
Part-time English classes are offered. In addition, students can take classes in word-processing and computing.
(시간제 영어수업이 개설되었다. 그 외에 학생들은 문서처리와 컴퓨터 수업도 수강할 수 있다.)
moreover도 furthermore와 같이 세미콜론(;)과 동반되어 사용되기도 한다.
d) Besides (~외에) : 뒤에 절이 나올 수도 있고 명사(구)가 나올 수도 있다.
ⅰ. The house was too expensive and too big. Besides, I'd grown fond of our little rented house.
(그 집은 너무 비싸고 컸다. 게다가 나는 내 작은 셋집이 좋아졌다.)
(ⅰ): ‘~게다가 우리 작은 셋집이 좋아졌다.’(절을 동반)
cf) grow fond of ~ : ~이 좋아지다.
ⅱ. We have lots of things in common besides music.
(우리는 음악이외에 많은 것을 공유한다.)
(ⅱ): ‘~음악 외에도 공통되는 것이 많다.’ (명사구 동반)
나. 연결어(구) + 명사(구)
⚫ 연결어(구) 뒤에 명사 혹은 명사구가 나오는 경우
a) In addition to (~외에)
- <in addition to>는 <in addition>과 형태와 의미가 비슷하지만, 동반 구조가 다르다.
- <in addition + 절>, <in addition to + 명사(구)>가 사용되는 점에 유의하자.
ⅰ. There's a postage and packing fee in addition to the repair charge.
(수리비 이외에 우편요금과 포장비가 있다.)
(ⅰ): In addition to +구(句) (명사구 동반)
ⅱ. There's a postage and packing fee. In addition, there is a repair change.
(우편요금과 포장비가 있다. 그 외에 수리비도 있다.)
(ⅱ): In addition +절 (절을 동반)
b) Besides (~외에) : 뒤에 절이 나올 수도 있고 명사(구)가 나올 수도 있다.
ⅰ. I don’t really want to go. Besides, it's too late now.
(나는 정말로 가고 싶지 않아요. 게다가 시간도 늦었어요.)
(ⅰ): ‘~게다가’를 의미하는 접속부사. (절을 동반)
ⅱ. Besides a mother he has a sister to support.
(어머니 외에 그는 부양해야할 여동생도 있다.)
(ⅱ): ‘~외에’를 의미하는 전치사. (명사구 동반)
※ 참고: besides가 부정문에 사용되는 경우는 except와 같은 의미로 쓰인다.(~제외하고)
There's no one here besides Bill and me.
(나와 빌을 제외하고 여기에 아무도 없다.)
2. 반대되는 내용을 연결할 때
although, even though, while, despite, in spite of와 같은 표현들이 연결어(구)로 사용된다.
가. 연결어(구) + 양보절
⚫ although / even though / while (비록 ~할지라도)이 사용됨.
양보절은 주절에 종속되는 종속절로 독립적으로 존재할 수 없다.
ⅰ. Although he is old, he is quite strong.
(그가 나이가 들었지만 아주 힘이 세다)
ⅱ. Even though I'm supposed to be working by myself, there are other people who I can interact with.
(내가 혼자 일하기로 되어 있음에도, 상호작용할 수 있는 다른 사람들이 있다.)
ⅲ. While the grandparents love the children, they are strict with them.
(조부모님들은 아이들을 사랑하시지만 아이들에게 엄격하시다.)
* while는 '~동안' 의 의미도 있음
이들 양보절은 주절에 종속되는 종속절로서, 독립적으로 존재할 수 없다.
나. 연결어(구) + 절
⚫ nevertheless (그럼에도 불구하고)는 뒤에 절이 나온다.
nevertheless가 이끄는 절은 독립적으로 존재할 수 있다.
Most marriages fail after between five and nine years. Nevertheless, people continue to get married.
(대부분의 결혼은 5년에서 9년 사이에 실패한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사람들은 계속 결혼한다.) → (절을 동반)
다. 연결어(구) + 명사(구)
⚫ despite, in spite of (~임에도 불구하고)는 뒤에 명사구가 뒤따른다.
ⅰ. They went for a walk despite the rain.
(비가 왔음에도 불구하고 그들은 산책 하러갔다.)
(ⅰ): despite는 전치사로서 명사구 동반.
ⅱ. She arrived at school on time in spite of the snowstorm.
(그녀는 눈보라에도 불구하고 늦지 않고 학교에 도착했다.)
(ⅱ): in spite of 도 명사구 동반.
3. 원인 또는 결과의 관계를 연결할 때
because, since, for(앞 첫머리에 사용할 수 없음), therefore, as a result, consequently, hence, thus, because of, due to, as a result of 들이 사용된다.
가. 연결어(구) + 종속절
⚫ because, since, for (~ 때문에)는 종속절을 이끈다.
이들 종속절은 독립적으로 존재할 수 없다.
ⅰ. The boy was absent because he was ill.
(그 소년은 아팠기 때문에 결석을 했다.)
ⅱ. Since you're not interested, I won't tell you about it.
(당신이 관심이 없기 때문에 나는 말하지 않을 것이다.)
ⅲ. It is morning, for the birds are singing.
(새가 노래하는 것을 보니 아침이다.)
※ 참고: because나 since와 달리, for는 주절에 대한 부가적 이유를 제시하므로 항상 주절 뒤에 와야 한다. 따라서 다음과 같은 문장은 비문이다.
⇒ For the birds are singing, it is morning.
나. 연결어(구) + 절
⚫ therefore, as a result, consequently, hence, thus (그리하여, 결과적으로, 그래서)가
사용되며 뒤에 절이 뒤따른다. 이들 종속절은 독립적으로 존재할 수 있다.
ⅰ. They have their examinations at the beginning of the next term; therefore, they have to revise right through the holiday.
(그들은 다음 학기 초에 시험을 본다; 그래서 그들은 방학 동안 곧바로 복습을 해야 한다.)
ⅱ. Most people agree that this terrible bomb ended World War Ⅱ. As a result, many thousands of lives were saved.
(많은 사람들은 이 끔찍한 폭탄이 2차 세계대전을 종식시켰다는 데 동의한다. 그 결과, 수많은 사람들의 생명을 구했다.)
ⅲ. The trade imbalance is likely to rise again in 1990. Hence a new set of policy actions will be required soon.
(1990년도에 다시 무역불균형이 시작될 것 같다. 그러므로 새로운 일련의 새로운 정책 실행이 곧 요구될 것이다.)
ⅳ.Thus it was necessary for me to resign.
(따라서 내가 사임하는 것은 필연적이었다.)
다. 연결어(구) + 명사(구)
⚫ because of, due to, as a result of (~ 때문에, ~의 결과로써)가 사용되며 뒤에
명사(구)를 동반함.
ⅰ. Schools were closed because of heavy snowfall.
(폭설 때문에 학교가 폐쇄됐다.)
ⅱ. All planes are grounded due to fog.
(모든 비행기들이 안개로 이륙하지 못한다.)
ⅲ. As a result of the fire, they made new rules for building.
(화재의 결과로 새로운 건물법을 제정했다.)
4. 내용을 분명히 하려고 할 때
in other words, that is (다시 말하면, 즉)가 사용되며, 이들은 절을 이끈다.
ⅰ. The pump used the desert's most common resource, sunlight, to get water. In other words, it turned the desert climate into an advantage rather than a disadvantage.
(펌프는 물을 얻기 위해 사막에서 가장 흔한 자원인 태양빛을 사용했다. 말하자면, 사막의 기후를 불이익이 아닌 이익으로 바꾸었다. )
ⅱ. I believe his account of the story, that is , I have no reason to doubt it.
(그 사연에 대한 그의 설명을 믿는다. 즉, 그것을 의심할 아무 이유가 없습니다.)
※ 참고: that is는 라틴어 표현인 id est를 영어로 번역한 것이다. that is to say와 같은 표현이고 라틴어 표현의 축약형인 i.e.로도 사용됨.
5. 대조되는 내용을 소개하려 할 때
whereas, while, in contrast, however, on the other hand, conversely, unlike 등이 쓰인다.
가. 연결어(구) + 종속절
⚫ whereas, while (그런데)은 절이 뒤따른다.
이들 절은 종속절로서 독립적으로 존재할 수 없다.
ⅰ. You need a B and two Cs to do English, whereas other courses seemed to accept much lower grades.
(당신은 영어를 합격하기 위해 B하나와 C두개가 있어야 한다. 그런데 다른 과목들은 훨씬 더 낮은 점수를 받았던 것 같다.)
ⅱ. The soles are leather, while the uppers are canvas.
(신발 밑창은 가죽이다. 그런데 갑피는 캔버스다.)
※ 참고: while이 '비록~할지라도'의 의미로 해석되는 경우는 문장의 앞에 나온다.
While the grandparents love the children, they are strict with them.
(조부모님들은 아이들을 사랑하시지만 아이들에게 엄격하시다.)
나. 연결어(구) + 절
⚫ in contrast, however, on the other hand, conversely (그에 반해서, 그러나, 다른 한편, 정 반대로)은 뒤에 절이 뒤따른다. 이들 절은 독립적으로 존재할 수 있다.
ⅰ. In contrast, the lives of girls in well-to-do families were often very protected.
(그에 반해서 유복한 가정의 소녀들의 삶은 종종 크게 보호되었다.)
ⅱ. We have not yet won; however, we shall keep trying.
(우리는 아직 승리하지 못했다; 그러나 우리는 계속 노력할 것이다.)
ⅲ. It was an unfortunate experience, but, on the other hand, one can learn from one's mistakes.
(불행한 경험이었다, 그러나 다른 한편 자신의 실수로부터 배울 수 있다.)
but이 나왔지만, 더 강하게 반대의 의미를 부각시킬 때 on the other hand사용
ⅳ. You can add the fluid to the powder; conversely, the powder to the fluid.
(여러분은 그 액체를 그 가루에 첨가할 수 있습니다. 역으로 그 액체에 그 가루를 첨가 할 수도 있습니다.)
다. 연결어(구) + 명사(구)
⚫ unlike (~와 달리)는 뒤에 명사구가 뒤따른다.
Unlike me, you are a rich, important, and popular person.
(나와는 달리, 당신은 부자이고 중요하며, 인기 있는 사람이다.)
6. 예증을 소개할 때
for example, for instance (예컨대, 이를테면)은 뒤에 절이 뒤따른다.
ⅰ. In her presentation, there were many things that I had read or heard of before in other classes. For example, I knew that there were schools where kids were in intensive English programs.
(그녀의 발표에서 내가 전에 읽었거나 다른 반에서 들었던 많은 것들이 있었다. 이를테면, 아이들이 집중 영어프로그램을 받는 학교들이 있다는 것을 알았다.)
ⅱ. This program has problems. For instance, it's hard to retrieve lost data.
(이 프로그램은 문제점들이 있다. 이를테면, 손실된 자료를 검색하기 힘들다.)
7. 내용을 대비하여 강조할 때
on the contrary, as a matter of fact, in fact는 앞의 내용을 강하게 반대하거나 뒤의 내용을 강조할 때 쓰이는 표현들로서, 이들 표현들 뒤에 절을 동반한다.
가. on the contrary
⚫ ‘~에 반하여’를 의미하며, 앞의 내용을 강하게 반대하거나 뒤의 내용을 강조한다. 뒤에 절을 동반함.
They were not sleeping, On the contrary, they were talking, singing, laughing.
(그들은 자고 있지 않았다. 반대로 이야기하고 노래하고 웃고 있었다.)
나. as a matter of fact, in fact
⚫ ‘사실상, 실제로’의 의미로서, indeed와 같은 의미이다. 뒤의 나오는 내용을 강조하며. 뒤에 절이 동반된다.
ⅰ. English is very important for my future study. In fact, I will have to use it for the rest of my life.
(영어는 나의 미래의 연구에 매우 중요하다. 사실상 나의 남은 생애에 영어를 사용해야만 할 것이다.)
ⅱ. I should be able to negotiate in English as I do in Korean or in Chinese. As a matter of fact, my success in doing business with some countries depends on my English.
(나는 한국어와 중국어뿐만 아니라 영어로도 협상할 수 있어야 한다. 사실상, 몇몇 국가와의 사업에서 나의 성공은 나의 영어 능력에 달려 있다.)
