Georg Katzer
Georg Katzer was born 1935 in Silesia (today Poland). He studied composition and piano with Rudolf Wagner-Regeny und Ruth Zechlin in Berlin(East) and at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Later, he studied with Hanns Eisler, as a student of his postgraduate class at Hans Eisler the Akademie der Künste Berlin(Adk - now Universität der Künste Berlin, UdK). In 1978, Katzer became an elected member of the Akademie der Künste himself, where he founded the Studio for Experimental (Electro-acoustic) Music, which he served as artistic director until 2005. In 1980, he was appointed as professor for composition and held a master class at the Akademie. Katzer received numerous awards in the GDR, in France, Switzerland and the Federal Republic of Germany, among others the Federal Cross of Merit in 2003. He was member of the Institut international de musique électroacoustique de Bourges, France, and honorary guest at the Villa Massimo in Rom, Italy. In 1980, he was Visiting Professor at Michigan State University, USA. In addition to his compositional work (orchestra pieces, solo concerts, chamber music, three operas, two ballets, electroacoustic- and multimedia works), Katzer was also involved in multimedia-projects and improvised music. On European tours, he played with Johannes Bauer, Wolfgang Fuchs, Paul Lytton, Radu Malfatti, Phil Wachsman, Phil Minton and Tony Oxley (among others). Georg Katzer, 84, passed away on May 7th, 2019, in Berlin.
“Dialog” for Flute and Piano (1974)
Georg Katzer composed the duo in 1974 for Werner Tast (solo flutist at the Komische Oper) and Bernd Kaspar (accompanist at Deutschen Staatsoper).

“The Sea ” for Piano Solo (2023

“Arecibo.......msg. ” for Flute (2023)

“Klaviersituation für Klavierspieler” (2007)
“Beyond the boundary - Unfair repetition” for Clarinet in Bb and Piano (2015)
Helmut Zapf
Helmut Zapf is born in Thüringen on March 4, 1956, studied church music from 1974 to 1979 at the church music schools in Eisenach (Thuringia) and Halle (Saale). During this time Zapf took part in the summer courses for new music in Gera (Thuringia). After graduating, he worked from 1979 to 1982 as cantor at the town church in Eisenberg(Thuringia). Before beginning his master class studies with Georg Katzer at the GDR Academy of Arts in Berlin (1982–1986), he created his first autodidactic compositions, e.g. the works ‘Singender Mann’ for flute solo, ‘Brechungen I and II’ for flute and string trio, ‘Klang-etude II’ for orchestra, ‘Recitative’ for oboe and string quartet. Since his master's graduation, Helmut Zapf has been working as a composer at Zepernick in Berlin. Since 2015, he has been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
“Singender Mann” for Flute Solo (1982)
Helmut Zapf wrote the solo work for flute in the early composition phase, while still working as a church musician, in 1980 in Eisenberg (Thuringia). During this time, Zapf dealt with the work of the sculptor and writer Ernst Barlach (1870–1938). Ernst Barlach was persecuted by the Hitler dictatorship and created his sculpture “Singing Man” in 1928.
This sculpture inspired Zapf's 1980 solo for flute. -
In this sculpture we recognize “the infinity in the silent mirror of clear sounds, simpler tones (so Barlach about an accidental musical experience in Russia, in a note of August 23, 1914). The Singing Man shows in an exemplary way what Barlach formulated for his artistic credo: "My mother tongue is the human figure, or the milieu, the object through which or in which man lives, suffers, is happy, feels, thinks.”
Zapf says “my thinking is only music, always images those are ringing by themselves”.
In 1982 Werner Tast (principal flutist at the Komische Oper Berlin) included the solo in his publishing series “New Works for Flute” at the German Music Publishers (DVLM), today “Breitkopf und Härtel”.
Zapf also wrote other solo pieces and songs based on works by Ernst Barlach. For example, “Dancing Old Man” for violoncello solo or double bass solo (1985) and a song based on a text by Ernst Barlach “My eyes were like spiders, they caught the images of the world” for tenor, flute and string trio.

Mise-en Festival in New York 2015, Neo Arte Festival Poland
“Interlacing II ” for Flute, Clarinet, Cello & Piano (2023)
Ensemble JungeMusik BB (Deutchland) >
The "Ensemble JungeMusik BB" was formed in 1992 under the direction of Helmut Zapf with students and prizewinners of the competition "Jugend musiziert" at the music school in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The basis of his work was initially experimenting with new playing techniques and improvising. With the growing up of the young people and the development of their skills through studying an instrument, the ensemble has expanded enormously and is able to perform in all variants of instrumental formations. The ensemble today has a solid core with fl.ob.cl.cr.sax.va.vc.cb.pn.acc. The focus of the work has remained New Music.
Young composers and composing students in particular are encouraged, such as Sebastian Stier, Steffen Schellhase, Taner Akyol, Janis Antonopulis and Tomasz Tarczynski in the past, so today are young composers such as Rene Kuwan, Sujin Lee, Max Kolomiiets, Xuan Hao, to name just a few to name. But well-known composers such as Friedrich Schenker, Robert Carl, Friedrich Goldmann, Annette Schlünz, Charlotte Seither, Georg Katzer, Walter Zimmermann, Michael Timpson, Eunsil Kwon, Rainer Rubbert, Martin Daske, Lothar Voigtländer and Gwyn Pritchard also wrote especially for the ensemble.
The ensemble performs continuously as a festival ensemble at the international festival "Intersonanzen" in Potsdam, at the "Randfestspiele" in Zepernick and at the "International Klangwerkstatt" in Berlin. At these festivals it's like an ensemble in residence.
In 2000, like 1992, Helmut Zapf founded the Ensemble Teenmusic at the Kreuzberg Music School in Berlin for the next generation of Ensemble JungeMusik BB.
In the name the letters BB mean Berlin/Brandenburg.
Ob. Cl. Cr. Sax. Va. Vc. Cb. Pf. Acc.
