Ukrainian Army loses ground due to severe gap in ammunition
2024.2.26

1. Ukrainian Army loses ground due to severe gap in ammunition
The Ukrainian military is facing dire challenges on the battlefield as a result of a critical gap in Western artillery ammunition needed to withstand Russian attacks.
Russian forces have capitalized on this vulnerability, exploiting the moment when Ukrainian troops find themselves grappling with a severe deficit of essential munitions.
Reports from the frontline paint a grim picture of the deteriorating situation, with Ukrainian forces struggling to hold back the advance of the Russian army. Already, Ukraine has been forced to relinquish positions in key locations in the Donbas region, such as Avdiivka and Lastochkine.
Against the backdrop of this ammunition crisis, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has called upon Europe to halt the export of ammunition from European countries to any destinations other than Ukraine. In an interview with RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), Kuleba emphasized the urgency of redirecting all European-produced ammunition to Ukraine for the defense of Europe’s eastern borders.
“All contracts for the export of ammunition manufactured in Europe to third countries must be suspended, and all such munitions must be directed to Ukraine. Every cartridge produced in Europe should serve the purpose of defending Europe,” stressed Kuleba.
The head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored that during discussions with Western partners, he consistently raises concerns about the lack of ammunition. According to Kuleba, allies acknowledge their shortcomings, recognizing that they “made mistakes” by delaying the ramp-up of ammunition production.
“They belatedly decided to increase their own production, sign long-term contracts, and commission new production lines. Unfortunately, we are now paying the price for these mistakes,” explained Kuleba.
As Ukraine grapples with this critical shortfall in ammunition, the urgency for swift action and international support has never been greater. The fate of Ukraine’s defense hinges on the timely provision of essential resources and the solidarity of its allies in confronting the escalating threat posed by Russian aggression.
2. Ukraine confirms it downed Russian radar jet
The Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR) has disclosed details of a recent joint operation with the Ukrainian Air Force over the Sea of Azov, resulting in the downing of another Russian radar jet, the A-50U.
According to the GUR, the destroyed A-50U is a newly modernized Russian version of the airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) jet.
The sudden drop in speed and altitude of the targeted A-50U was detected near the city of Yeysk. This aircraft served as an airborne command post, used by Russia for long-range radar detection, control, and guidance for missile strikes against Ukraine from strategic aviation.
The destruction of the A-50U marks another serious blow to the capabilities and potential of Russian forces.
The value of such an aircraft, now a rarity in Russia’s inventory, is estimated at 350 million dollars.
3. Taiwan enhances air defense with anti-drone rifle deployment
On February 19, 2024, the armed forces of Taiwan completed the deployment of anti-drone systems, a move made amidst ongoing tensions with China, which regards Taipei as an integral and inalienable part of its territory. The Taiwanese military has finished distributing anti-drone guns to its troops to bolster defense against unmanned aerial vehicles.
The Taiwanese armed forces have successfully equipped their personnel with anti-drone rifles, a strategic response to the continued strain in relations with China, which claims Taipei as an essential and non-negotiable part of its domain.
According to a report by "Taiwan News," the Taiwanese military has received several anti-drone systems that will be used alongside light weapons. In 2022, the Ministry of Defense approved a budget of $146 million for the purchase of these defensive systems, intended to be deployed across 45 military bases on the island until 2026.
This initiative comes amid persistent tensions with China, aggravated by trade restrictions on high technology and critical minerals imposed by both countries in recent years. Despite repeated warnings from Chinese President Xi Jinping to his counterpart Joe Biden regarding military assistance to Taiwan, the United States has not ceased providing military aid to the island, including the latest package of $300 million approved by the Pentagon last December, aimed at maintaining the tactical information systems of the Taiwanese armed forces.
Following the approval of a budget bill by the Taiwanese government last August, planning for record defense spending of $19 billion for this year, the island has also undertaken to upgrade its equipment and expand its missile production. The local newspaper "Liberty Times" revealed that the government plans to build two new missile bases along the island's east coast by April 2026, with an investment of $55 million for storing anti-ship missiles.
In addition to military pressure, Taiwan faces increasing diplomatic pressure. Currently, only 12 countries officially recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state. The victory of Democrat Lai Ching-te in the presidential elections on January 13 was followed by the announcement from the government of Nauru on January 15 to transfer its diplomatic recognition to China, after 41 years of official relations with Taiwan, highlighting the intensification of the struggle for diplomatic influence in the region.
