Who’s More Pathetic
By D.J. YOON
Living alone in the countryside my grandma
Planting garlic in late fall last year
Taking good care of them throughout the springtime
I heard she had a super-good garlic farming
In the coming weekend
Bringing all my family together
I’ll harvest all the garlic there
Grandma thought to herself
Grandma says by the way
Going to the garlic field yesterday
Someone took them all away
My father says in a supporting way
Someone with so pitiful circumstances must have done it
Just count it as helping that poor person and forget about it
Grandma, known as a lone diligent farmer, talks to herself
I can’t forget the garlic ‘cause it keeps getting stuck in my eyes
Who do you think is more pitiful?
Grandma or the poor person who took away all the garlic in her garlic field?
Appreciation Review
1. composition and format
This verse shows its unique composition and form.
Each stanza ends with ‘I heard’ as if the story was heard indirectly, and the last stanza poses a question to readers.
For the poet wants to stand in a third party's perspective, neither on his grandma's side nor on his father's side.
2. mediation vs. advocacy
In response to his mother’s complaints that ‘garlic keeps stuck in my eyes and I can’t forget it,’ my father takes a broader stance and advocates ‘the person with so pitiful circumstances.’ ‘Just count it as helping that poor person and forget about it.’ says he.
However, the poet does not take the side of his grandma or father. Instead, he takes a neutral role as a mediator. Then he asks a question of ‘who is more pitiful’ to his readers.
‘Who is more pathetic?’
3. weight of emotions
Since the father speaks of the ‘pitiful situation’ as an economic meaning, the ‘pitiful’ feeling that the poet talks about cannot escape from the economic category.
On the other hand, the grandma's pitiful feeling comes from the loss, despair and injustice which are caused by the lost or stolen garlic, just like a family or the one compared to her whole life, into which she had put a lot of time, love, and efforts with 'taking good care of them throughout the springtime.'
Grandma’s pitiful feeling >>> Father’s pitiful feeling
4. difficulties in translation
(1) The adjective ‘딱한’ couldn‘t be translated into the identical word and was expressed as ’pitiful’ or ‘pathetic.’
• pitiful: inspiring or deserving pity
• pathetic: evoking or expressing pity, sympathy, etc.
(2) The phrase ‘I heard’ is mentioned only once in English translation for the sake of the poem’s composition.
감상평
• pitiful: inspiring or deserving pity
• pathetic: evoking or expressing pity, sympathy, etc.
