UTOPIA NO(W)HERE ● Yim Tae Kyu (b. 1976) was born in Seoul, Korea and obtained his M.F.A. in Chung Ang University Department of Painting after finishing his B.F.A at Seoul National University . He was awarded prestigious art prizes including the Song Eun Art Award (2005), Young Artist of KUMHO museum (2006) and the Seok Nam Arts Award (2007). His works are recognized for their playful reinterpretation of traditional ink painting and for the bitterly amusing scenes of metropolitan banality that reveals the various aspects of the marginal man. In viewing his oeuvre, Yim already introduced the notion of the marginal man as early as 2002, which becomes his continued interest. An American sociologist, Robert E. Park, formulated the concept of the marginal man adopted by Yim. Park described this concept as an archetype of a man either, or both, culturally or biologically carrying within him two distinct cultures. By and large, Yim persistently explores this notion in order to address those who are neglected in a cultural and socially suspended metropolis. ● In 2008, he began a series of paintings and sculptures under the theme titled 'Erehwon'. The unusual title, 'Erehwon', resonates with the name of satirical utopia in Samuel Butler's novel, Erewhon (1872), and is an anagram of the word "nowhere". Butler forges his utopia as a device to question the Victorian virtues and its religious hypocrisies. Comparable to Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726), Erewhon also has peculiar laws and inhabit under absurd conditions - like the absence of machines so to prevent the dangers of them growing conscious by Darwinian Selection. Yim's imagined world extends that view to our times, and his surreal landscape inversely speaks of our reality. ● This paradoxical utopia is sharply modeled after our cosmopolitan, and, through it, Yim comments on the exhausted outskirts of our society; such as the outlaws, lesbian, and the deprived. He aptly conveys criticality from the rubbles of personal experiences and observations. Pulled from the artist's own trite reality - like driving or lovers kissing or taking a bath - Yim intuitively portrays the populous urban landscape and alienated state of the individual in mass society. The mixture of vivid primary colours, nauseating speed and swarm of restless miniature figures parallel the disconcerting complexity of a metropolis. Everything is set in motion and constantly among action. This overcrowding gives rise to a sensation of speed, instability and estrangement. Also, breaking sharply from its haze, the ashen skin-tones of the figures reflect its traditional paper medium, and contrasts with the colourful clothing and the cityscape. This further accentuates the difference between the figures and their environment. As a result, drawn with swift lines, the pale figures lack distinguishable identities and merely reflect each other like a multitude of fettered reproductions. ● However, as much as Butler's utopia was not a complete dystopia, Yim's 'Erehwon' also harbors unrestricted curiosity and imagination. The surreal atmosphere transforms the mundane familiarity allowing the figures to take-off and take control. Also, on his training in ink painting, his space is usually indefinite and unknown. Besides and beyond the meditative quality of the unknown, however, his nameless metropolis – or utopia – generates a sense of childhood curiosity and adventure. In his 8 meter long Erehwon (2009), the sketchy, cartoon-like figures recapture the peripheral lives with crude naivety, and the vitality seeps out from the ceaseless lines, accidental ink blotches, and variegated colors. Yim has an ability to portray the landscape of mundane periphery, all the while, dissolving the banal routine into ingenuous imagination. ● Furthermore, Yim also attempts to dismantle the conventional boundaries through his methodology. In order to achieve the sketch-like lines in his painting, Yim soaks a piece of traditional Korean paper with oriental ink, overlaps it with another paper before the ink dries, and draws on top of it with a pencil or a sharp object. Like the expressive quality of traditional brushstrokes, the transferred lines are speedy, focused and intricate. They move between the will of a trained ink painter and the possibility of leaks and accidents. His inventiveness playfully incorporates cartoons and contemporary references to still a rigid genre of traditional painting. As a result of the artist's continued experiment, his unique method delivers a distinct approach that blurs the boundaries between tradition and contemporary, and the East and West. ● Through his sculptures, Yim brings together the genre of painting and sculpture. He covers the fibre-reinforced plastic form with Korean paper and paints on top of it. The paper surface and black outlines of the Fly Away Home S-Type (2010) series, although dynamically depicting the artist flying colorful airplanes, also accompanies a sense of 2-dimensional flatness. The sculptures, themselves, are beings in limbo – neither sculpture nor painting. The feeling of displacement, instability as well as freedom present in his imagery - revealing the rich spectrum of the notion of the marginal - gets amplified to the exhibition space. ● Thinking on how his artwork interacts with reality, in its imagery and by its material, Yim's 'Erehwon' does not seem to exist solely as a social critic or dwell in a non-existing utopian country. The French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, read Samuel Butler's Erewhon not as an anagram of the word "no-where" but as "now-here". Unlike an agitated loop - or daily routine - that led no-where, for Deleuze, the notion of vitality was a critical aspect of contemporary reality. He applied this concept to differentiate idealist's phantasmagoria to possibility of utopian revolution. Likewise, drawing from real experiences and refraining any predetermined grand-narratives, Yim's curious journey embraces the complexity and arbitrariness of immanent reality. The cartoon-like figures exist in a splendor of vitality and openness to all possibilities. His utopian society exists amongst the unprecedented complexities; or in someplace now-here. Namely, for both Deleuze and Yim, the limbo state of beings could also translate as infinite potential. In that, instead of imposing a reflection or introspection, Yim's works come alive with every tick the minute hand. In that, every journey of our eyes and our feet travel on the incessant waves of undetermined beginnings. ■ ART SEASONS Gallery
