4. 십육왕자가 법을 청하다
23.24.
爾時十六王子 偈讚佛已 勸請世尊 轉於法輪 咸作是言 世尊說法 多所安隱 憐愍饒益諸天人民 重說偈言
이 때 십육 왕자는 게송으로 부처님을 찬탄하고 나서 세존께 법륜을 굴리시기를 청하면서 다 같이 이렇게 말하였느니라. ‘세존께서 설하시는 법문은 매우 편안합니다. 모든 천신들과 사람들을 어여삐 여기시어 이롭게 하여주십시오.’ 라고 하였느니라.
그리고 다시 게송으로 말하였느니라.
At that time the sixteen princes, having praised the Buddha in these verses, urged the World-Honored One to turn the wheel of the Law, speaking all together in these words: "World-Honored One, expound the Law. By doing so, you will bring tranquility to and will comfort and benefit heavenly and human beings in large measure."
They repeated this request in verse form, saying:
at that time; 이 때
the sixteen princes; 십육 왕자는
in these verses; 게송으로
having praised the Buddha; 부처님을 찬탄하고 나서
the World-Honored One; 세존께
turn the wheel of the Law; 법륜을 굴리시기를
urged to; 청하면서
all together; 다 같이
speaking in these words; 이렇게 말하였느니라
expound the Law; 법을 설하십시오
by doing so; 설하시는 법문은
you will bring tranquility to and will comfort
; 편안을 가져다 줄 것입니다
heavenly and human beings; 천신들과 사람들을
benefit in large measure; 많이 이롭게 하여주십시오
they repeated this request in verse form, saying
; 다시 게송으로 말하였느니라

25.
世雄無等倫 百福自莊嚴 得無上智慧 願爲世間說
度脫於我等 及諸衆生類 爲分別顯示 領得是智慧
세상의 영웅이시며 짝할 사람 없으시어
온갖 복으로 장엄하시고 가장 높은 지혜를 얻으셨으니
세상 사람들을 위하여 법을 설하십시오.
저희들과 모든 중생들을 제도하여 해탈케 하시려고
분별하여 보여 주시며 지혜를 얻게 하십시오.
World hero without peer,
you who adorn yourself with a hundred blessings,
you have attained unsurpassed wisdom--
we beg you to preach for the sake of the world.
Save and free us
and other kinds of living beings.
Draw distinctions, enlighten us
and allow us to attain wisdom.
world hero; 세상의 영웅이시며
without peer; 짝할 사람 없으시어
with a hundred blessings; 온갖 복으로
you who adorn yourself; 장엄하시고
unsurpassed wisdom; 가장 높은 지혜를
you have attained; 얻으셨으니
for the sake of the world; 세상 사람들을 위하여
we beg you to preach; 법을 설하여 주십시오
us and other kinds of living beings; 저희들과 모든 중생들을
save and free; 제도하여 해탈케 하시려고
draw distinctions; 분별하여
enlighten us; 보여 주시며
to attain wisdom; 지혜를 얻게
allow us; 하십시오

26.
若我等得佛 衆生亦復然 世尊知衆生 深心之所念
亦知所行道 又知智慧力 欲樂及修福 宿命所行業
世尊悉知已 當轉無上輪
만약 저희들이 성불한다면
다른 중생들도 모두 그렇게 될 것입니다.
세존께서는 중생들이 깊은 마음으로
염원하는 것을 아시며 또한 하는 일들을 아실 것입니다.
지혜의 힘과 욕망과 닦아온 복과
과거에 지은 업도 아실 것입니다.
세존께서 모두 아시니
마땅히 최상의 법륜을 굴려 주십시오. 라고 하였느니라.
If we can gain Buddhahood,
then all living beings can do likewise.
World-Honored One, you know the thoughts
that living beings hold deep in their minds.
you know the paths they tread
and you know the strength of their wisdom,
their pleasures, the blessings they have cultivated,
the actions they have carried out in past existences,
World-Honored One, all this you know already--
now you must turn the unsurpassed wheel!
if we can; 만약 저희들이
gain Buddhahood; 성불한다면
then all living beings; 다른 중생들도
can do likewise; 모두 그렇게 될 것입니다
World-Honored One; 세존께서는
living beings; 중생들이
deep in their minds; 깊은 마음으로
the thoughts that hold; 염원하는 것을
you know; 아시며
the paths they tread; 하는 일들을
the strength of their wisdom; 지혜의 힘과
their pleasures; 욕망과
the blessings they have cultivated; 닦아온 복과
in past existences; 과거에
the actions they have carried out; 지은 업도
all this you know already; 이미 다 아실 것입니다
now you must; 마땅히
the unsurpassed wheel; 최상의 법륜을
turn; 굴려 주십시오
