1. 구문상 필요한 도치
① What are you reading now? (의문문; 의문사 + 동사 + 주어)
② Long live the king! (기원문; 부사 + 동사 + 주어)
③ If I were rich, I could buy the car. (가정법 과거)
= Were I rich, I could buy the car.
④ He never forgets what he has once heard.
= What he has once heard. (He never forgets, 목 + 주 + 동)
⑤ She did not say a word all day long.
= Not a word did she say all day long.
◇목적어가 부정어와 함께 문두로 도치되면 "조동사 + 주 + 본동사" 어순.
주격보어가 문두로 도치되면 "보어 + 동 + 주" 의 어순.
2. 부사, 부사구의 도치
①자동사 다음에 오는 부사가 문두로 도치될 때,
주어가 대명사 → 부사 + 주어 + 동사,
주어가 명사 → 부사 + 동사 + 주어.
* He fell down. = Down he fell. (부 + 대명사 + 주 + 동)
* The man fell down. = Down fell the man. (부 + 동 + 명 + 주)
②타동사인 경우 → 부사(구), 부정부사 + 조동사 + 주어 + 본동사의 순.
* I well remember his name.
= Well do I remember his name.
* I have never seen such a wonderful sight.
= Never have I seen such a wonderful sight.
◇조동사가 따로 없을 땐 do를 인칭과 시제에 맞게 사용, 단 be동사일 땐
be동사 + 주어.
* I little dreamed that I should never see her again.
= Little did I dream that I should never see her again.
◇ little은 "거의 ∼하지 않는" 의 뜻으로 준부정어이나 dream, realize,
imagine, think, know 등과 함께 쓰이면 순수부정의 뜻인 "결코 ∼하지 않는" 이 됨.
③ not ∼ until : ∼이 되어서야 비로소 ∼하다.
no sooner ∼ than : ∼하자마자 …하다.
* He did not know the fact until this morning.
= Not until this morning did he know the fact.
* She had no sooner seen him than she burst into tears.
= No sooner had she seen him than she burst into tears.
3. 강조
① 동사강조: 그 앞에 do를 인칭과 시제에 맞게 사용, 강조의 do는 강세가 있다.
* I know his name. (나는 그의 이름을 알고 있다.)
I d/o know his name. (나는 그의 이름을 참으로 알고 있다.)
② 명사강조: very가 the, this, that, one's 등의 뒤에 쓰여서 명사를 강조할 땐
"그, 바로 그", "∼에 틀림없는"의 뜻.
* This is the very book I have been looking for.
(이것이 바로 내가 찾고 있던 책이다.)
③ 목적어 및 보어의 강조
목적어나 보어를 강조하거나, 주어가 지나치게 긴 경우에는 목적어나
보어를 문장 앞으로 도치시키는 것이 보통이다.
(1) 목적어의 강조:「목적어+주어+동사」의 어순이 되는 것이 보통이다.
He broke that promise within a week.
⇒ That promise he broke within a week.
(그 약속을 그는 일주일도 못 가서 깼다.)
(2) 보어의 강조:「보어+동사+주어」의 어순이 되는 것이 보통이다.
Those who know the pleasure of doing good are happy.
⇒ Happy are those who know the pleasure of doing good.
(좋은 일을 하는 즐거움을 아는 사람들은 행복하다.)
④부사의 강조
부사를 강조하면「부사+(조동사)+주어+본동사」의 어순이 된다.
He fulfilled the duties so well.
⇒ So well did he fulfill the duties.
(아주 훌륭하게 그는 그 임무를 수행했다.)
He walked down the street with the children.
⇒ Down the street he walked with the children.
(거리를 따라 그는 아이들과 함께 걸어갔다.)
⑤ 의문문 강조: on, earth, in time world, the devil, at all, whatever
등의 어귀가 의문문에서 강조어귀로 쓰이면 "도대체, 조금이라도"의 뜻.
* Why on earth are you weeping? (너는 도대체 무엇 때문에 울고 있느냐?)
⑥부정문 강조: not 다음에 at all, in the least, whatever, in the slightest,
by any means, a bit, on any way 등의 어구가 오면 부정어
not을 강조, "조금도, 아무것도"의 뜻.
* He is not happy at all. (그는 조금도 행복하지 않다.)
* I know nothing whatever about it. (나는 그것에 관해 조금도 모른다.)
* 부정어의 강조
부정어를 강조할 때는 문장의 어순이「부정어+동사+주어」의 순으로 도치된다.
I never saw him again.
⇒ Never did I see him again. (다시는 그를 만나지 않았다.)
Not only was he brave, but he was wise.
(그는 용감할 뿐 아니라 현명했다.)
Little did she think that her daughter would become a lawyer.
(그녀는 자신의 딸이 변호사가 되리라고는 전혀 생각하지 못했다.)
4. 부정구문
영어의 부정은 꽤 복잡해서 우리말같이 간단하지가 않다. 단순히 not이나 never,
no만이 부정을 나타낸다고 볼 수 없기 때문이다.
* not ~ but ...과 no ~ but ...
not ~ but ...이나 no ~ but ...은「...하지 않는 ~는 없다」,
모든 ~는 ...하다」는 뜻의 부정 구문이다.
There is no rule but has exceptions. (예외 없는 규칙은 없다.)
It never rains but it pours. (비가 오기만 하면 언제나 쏟아 붓는다.)
Not a day passed but I met her. (그녀를 만나지 않고 지나는 날은 하루도 없다.)
* not ~, but ...
not ~, but ...은「~이 아니고 ...이다」는 뜻의 부정구문으로 앞의
not ~ but과는 전혀 뜻이 다르다. but 앞에 Comma(,)가 있으며, but 다음에
명사, 구, 절 어느 것이나 올 수 있다는 점에 주의해야 한다.
What I want is not wealth, but health.
(내가 원하는 것은 부가 아니라 건강이다.)
Most people talk not because they have anything to say,
but because they like talking.
(대부분의 사람들은 할 말이 있어서가 아니라 말하기를 좋아하기 때문에 말을 한다.)
* not only ~, but (also) ...
not only ~, but also ..., 또는 not only ~, but ...으로 쓰이는 이 구문은
「~뿐만 아니라 ...도」라는 뜻을 갖는다.
He has not only knowledge, but also experience.
(그는 지식뿐 아니라 경험도 가지고 있다.)
We like him not only for what he has, but for what he is.
(우리는 그가 가진 것 때문만 아니라 그의 사람됨 때문에도 그를 좋아한다.)
She can not only sing, but dance.
(그녀는 노래를 할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 춤도 출 수 있다.)
* nothing but ~
nothing but ~은「그저 ~일뿐」이란 뜻으로서 only와 같은 표현이 된다.
nothing but ~은 부정적인 시각을 나타내는 경향이 있다.
He is nothing but an opportunist. (그는 그저 기회주의자일 뿐이다.)
* anything but
anything but은 「~이외에는 무엇이든지」라는 뜻과
「결코 ~아니다」라는 의미를 갖는다.
I would give you anything but life. (목숨만은 살려 주십시오.)
He is anything but a liar. (그는 결코 거짓말쟁이가 아니다.)
* 명사절을 이끄는 but
but이 명사절을 이끄는 경우 but이 that ~ not의 의미를 갖게 된다.
주로 부정문이나 수사의문에 쓰인다.
It was impossible but he should notice it.
(그가 그것을 알아채지 못했다니 있을 수 없는 일이었다.)
Who knows but he may be right? (그가 옳지 않다는 것을 누가 알고 있는가?)
* 주의해야 할 but that
부정어를 동반하는 doubt, deny 등의 동사 뒤에 오는 but that은
그저 접속사로 쓰일 뿐이다.
I do not doubt but that he will succeed.
(그가 성공하리라는 것을 나는 의심치 않는다.)
I never deny but that you told the truth.
(당신이 진실을 말했다는 것을 나는 결코 부정하지 않는다.)
* too ~ to 부정사
too ~ to ...는「...하기에는 너무 ~하다」는 뜻으로서「너무 ~해서 ...할 수 없다」
는 부정의 의미가 내포된 표현이다.
He was too young to help his father.
(그는 너무 어려서 아버지를 도울 수 없었다.)
It rained too hard for us to go out.
(비가 너무 와서 우리는 밖에 나갈 수 없었다.)
She was too much frightened to speak.
(그녀는 너무 놀라서 말도 할 수 없었다.)
* not ~ till ... = not ~ until ...
not ~ till ...은「...할 때까지는 ~않다」는 뜻으로서「...하고서야 비로소 ~하다」
라고 옮기기도 한다. not ~ until ...도 같은 표현이다.
We do not know the blessing of our health till we lose it.
(우리는 건강을 잃고서야 비로소 그 고마움을 안다.)
Till now I knew nothing about it.
(지금까지 나는 그 일에 대해 전혀 몰랐다.)
I had not eaten anything till late in the afternoon.
(오후 늦게까지 나는 아무 것도 안 먹었다.)
He won’t go away till you promise to help him.
(당신이 그를 돕겠다고 약속할 때까지 그는 떠나지 않을 것이다.)
* not ~ till의 문장을 It ~ that 강조 구문으로 바꾸면
It is not till ~ that의 형태가 된다.
They did not come back till late at night.
(그들은 밤이 늦어서야 겨우 돌아 왔다.)
⇒ It was not till late at night that they came back.
I didn’t learn Korean until I came to Korea.
(나는 한국에 와서야 비로소 한국어를 배웠다.)
⇒ It was not until I came to Korea that I learned Korean.
◆ 주의해야 할 부정구문
* 부분부정
부정어 not, never, no가 all, every, both, always 등과 함께 쓰이면
「모두가 ~은 아니다」라든가「언제나 ~은 아니다」라는 부분부정의 의미가 된다.
All that glitters is not gold. (반짝이는 것이 모두 금은 아니다.)
Not every good man will prosper. (착한 사람이라고 모두 성공하는 것은 아니다.)
Not everybody likes him. (모두가 그를 좋아하는 것은 아니다. )
I don't know both those girls. (내가 저 소녀들을 둘 다 아는 것은 아니다. )
Both are not young. (두 사람 모두 젊은 것은 아니다. )
The rich are not always happy. (부자들이 언제나 행복한 것은 아니다.)
주의: 경우에 따라서는 완전부정이 될 수도 있고, 부분부정이 될 수도 있다.
All that he says is not true. (그가 말하는 것은 모두가 사실이 아니다.)
= Nothing that he says is true. <완전부정>
All that he says is not true. (그가 말하는 것 모두가 사실인 것은 아니다.)
= Not all that he says is true. <부분부정>
* 부정 비교구문
A no more ~ than B = A not ~ any more than B
(A가 ~이 아님은 B가 ~이 아님과 마찬가지다)
He is no more a scholar than we are.
(그가 학자가 아닌 것은 우리가 학자가 아닌 것과 마찬가지이다.)
I am no more mad than you (are).
(너와 마찬가지로 나도 미치지 않았다.)
Economic laws cannot be evaded any more than can gravitation.
(경제 법칙을 피할 수 없는 것은 중력을 피할 수 없는 것과 마찬가지다.)
He can not swim any more than fly.
(그는 날 수가 없듯이 헤엄칠 줄도 모른다.)
* 주절이 없는 부정구문
Not that ~, but that ...이나 Not because ~, but because ...는 주절이 없는
형태의 부정구문으로 It is not that ~, but that ...의 생략형으로 보면 된다.
It is not that I dislike it, but that I cannot afford it.
(그것이 마음에 안 든다는 게 아니라 살 만한 여유가 없는 것이다.)
Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.
(내가 시저를 덜 사랑했다는 것이 아니라 로마를 더 사랑했다는 것이다.)
Not that I am displeased with it, but that I do not want it.
(그것이 마음에 들지 않는 것이 아니라 그것을 원치 않는다는 것이다.)
Not because I dislike the work, but because I have no time.
(내가 그 일을 싫어하기 때문이 아니라 내가 시간이 없기 때문이다.)
* 단어/구의 직접부정
not이 부정해야 할 단어나 구의 바로 앞에 쓰이는 경우가 있다.
대개는 중복되는 부분이나 문맥상으로 무슨 말인지 분명한 부분을 생략하고 쓰는
표현에서 강조적인 용법으로 사용된다.
No, not you, of course. (아니, 물론 당신은 아니야.)
It is his book, not mine. (그것은 그의 책이지 나의 것이 아니다.)
Not a man spoke to her. (누구하나 그녀에게 말을 걸지 않았다.)
He spoke not a word. (그는 단 한마디도 하지 않았다.)
I will not do such a thing, not I. (나는 그런 짓을 안 할 것이다. 안 하고 말고.)
5. 생략
① when, while, though, if, as if, wherever 등이 이끄는 부사절에서
주어가 주절의 주어와 같고 be동사인 경우엔 "주어 + be동사" 가 생략
되는 경우가 많음.
* I will give you the money today, if (it is) necessary.
(필요하다면 오늘 돈을 드리겠습니다.)
* When (he was) a boy, he was very smart.
(소년이었을 때, 그는 아주 영리했다.)
* She had to work while (she was) yet a little girl.
(그녀가 아직 어린 소녀였을 때 그녀는 일을 해야만 했다.)
* Though (he is) timid, he is no coward.
(그는 수줍어하기는 하지만 겁쟁이는 아니다.)
* When (he was) a boy, he liked to play tennis.
* Insert commas wherever (they are) needed.
② 반복되는 것을 피하기 위해 생략.
* His wife died and also his children (died).
(그의 부인도 죽었고 그의 아이들도 죽었다.)
* Some people go to the mountain, Others (go) to the seaside.
③ 관용어구, 인사말, 격언, 게시용어 등에서 관용적으로 생략 가능.
* (It is) So much for today.
④ 비교 구문에서의 생략
They worked harder than (they worked) before.
(그들은 전보다도 더 열심히 일했다.)
You are not so tall as he is (tall).
(당신은 그 만큼 크지 않다.)
6. 공통관계
◇ 주어, 피수식어 등이 공통어인 경우. 술어, 동사 , 목적어 수식어구가 공통.
* I met home, and I watched television.
= I met home, and watched television.
* We cannot live by ourselves and for ourselves.
= We cannot live by and for ourselves.
7. 삽입어
◇문맥에 상관없이 앞에 나오는 말을 부가적으로, 구체적으로 설명하기
위한 단어나 구, 절 등을 문장 중간에 삽입.
* He was, indeed, a good boy.
* He is, I believe, a great statesman. = I believe that he is a great statesman.
8. 동격
* 명사 또는 명사 상당어구가 앞에 나온 낱말과 equal 관계로서 설명, 수식하는 경우,
명사, 부정사, 명사절 등이 쓰임.
* Mr. Brown, an English teacher, lives in the next door.
* He gave up the idea of borrowing money. (동격의 of)
9. 물 주 구 문 (物主構文)
①. 물주구문
* 사람주어 + can + 동사 ∼
= 물건주어 + enable + 목적어 + to do ∼
* People can travel through the air by airplanes.
= Airplanes enable people to travel through the air.
②. 사람주어 + cannot + 동사 ∼
= 물건주어 + prevent(keep,prohibits,hinders) + 목적어 + from + 동명사 ∼
= 물건주어 + forbid + 목적어 + to 부정사 ∼
* As I am ill, I cannot attend the meeting.
= Because of my illness, I cannot attend the meeting.
= My illness prevents me from attending the meeting.
= My illness forbids me to attend the meeting.
③. 사람주어 + have to (=must) + 동사 ∼: ∼해야 한다.
= 물주 + force (compel,oblige) + 목적어 + to 부정사 ∼
: 목적어로 하여금 ∼ 하도록 강요하다.
* He had to put off his departure because of the rain.
= The rain force(compel,oblige) him to put off his departure.
④. why + 조동사 + 주어 + 본동사 ∼ ?
= what + make + 목적어 + 원형동사(또는 형용사)?
* why do you think so? = what make you think so?
* You have come here for that reason.
= For what have you come here? (= Why)
= What have you come here for?
◇ why와 for는 함께 쓰일 수 없음
⑤. 사람주어 + go 또는 get to ∼
= 물주 + take + 사람목적어 ∼
* We rode in a bus for an hour, and got to the park.
= An hour's bus ride took us to the park.
= It took us an hour to get to the park.
= It took an hour for us to get to the park.
* How long does it take to ∼ ? : ∼하는데 얼마나 걸립니까?
* It takes + 사람 + 시간 + to ∼
시간 + for + 목적격 + to ∼
:사람이 ∼하는데 얼마의 시간이 걸리다.
A: How long does it take to go home?
B: It take me an hour (to go home)
⑥. 사람주어 + come, reach ∼
= 물주 + bring + 목적어 ∼
* When she heard the cry, she came to the spot.
= The cry brought her to the spot.
= 그녀가 그 외침 소리를 듣고, 그 장소로 왔다.
⑦. 사람주어 + have, derive + 목적어
= 물주 + give + 사람(I.O) + 물건(D.O)
* I have a good appetite after a short walk.
= A short walk gives me a good appetite.
⑧. 이유부사구, 이유 부사절이 있을 때
= 물주 + make, cause, drive + 목적어 + to부정사, 형용사, p·p
* He got angry because they laughed.(이유 부사절)
= Their laughter made him get angry.
⑨. 무생물주어가 조건을 나타낼 대
* A glance at the map will show you the way to the airport.(물주구문)
= If you glance at the map, you will find the way to the airport.(인주구문)
◇약을 복용하다 일땐 drink나 eat를 쓰지 않고 take를 사용한다.
