Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 2:12~17 - To the Church in Pergamum, Faith/Martyrdom, but the Church in Crisis of Idolatry
Revelation 2:16 - Repent therefore, I will fight against them with the sword of my mouth
☞ <Revelation> 2:16 - Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.(NIV); Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.(KJV); Repent of your sin, or I will come to you suddenly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth.(New Living Translation)
○ The reason why Jesus says, “These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword” at the beginning of the message to the church in Pergamum in <Revelation 2:12> is as written in <Revelation> 2:16. As we saw in the previous session, it is because there are those in the church in Pergamum who keep the teaching of Balaam and Nicolaitans which oppose Jesus Christ.
○ Therefore, Jesus warns, “Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” To fight against them means to destroy those who keep the teaching of Balaam and Nicolaitans. The sharp double-edged sword that comes out of the mouth of Jesus, which is incomparable to the single-edged sword of the governor, is not a surgical knife that heals, but a knife that destroys and kills.
○ The words of prophecy, "I will fight against them with the sword of my mouth" appear again in 'The Rider on the White Horse' in <Revelation> 19:11~21. It records the image of Jesus Christ destroying the Antichrist with the sharp double-edged sword in the long distant future that Jesus will come down to earth after the Second Coming in the air over the earth (c.AD 10,740~) and win the final battle of Armageddon (c.AD 11,700~). <Revelation> 19:15, it reads, “Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations“(NIV), here, ‘a sharp sword’ is ‘the sharp double-edged sword’.
