Dialogue
Tim: Did you hear that last news report, Kris?
Kris: I’m sitting right here, aren’t I? Why?
Tim: I have no idea what that guy meant by “new model” and “protected job market.”
Kris: I’m not sure either, because how
can a job be “protected?” Either the company succeeds or it doesn’t.
Tim: Maybe he’s talking about government entitlements that Italy provides for
everyone?
Kris: I don’t think so or he would have said so. But it might be tangentially
related.
Tim: How so?
Kris: Well, maybe the younger generation out there
expects everything to be handed to them, including jobs.
Tim:
Kris:
Tim:
Tim:
Tim:

Italy’s youth blame parents’ generation for job crisis
Performing with his acapella group in Rome’s jazz clubs is one of Jacopo Romei’s many pastimes. Life wasn’t always so harmonious. Jacopo struggled in early life – spending a year living on the streets. But he fought back and now
runs a successful IT consultancy firm, Ideato. He says life is getting tougher
for Italy’s youth. “It’s hard. You know, we are in a
sort of transition between a free job market and a protected job market. There
are no clear rules. So many are settled down to a model that doesn’t exist anymore while no one is really pushing the new model. And
it’s quite hard to match the extremes.” Analysts say those extremes are pulling Italian society apart. In
October, youths rioted on the streets of Rome after a 200,000-strong protest
turned violent.
