Day In and Day Out - Shh!
Wanda asks Ted be quiet.
Wanda : I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to ask your group to either keep it down or go someplace else to do whatever it is you're doing.
Ted : Oh, sorry. It's just that we all have to do this project together and we couldn't find anyplace else to sit. We'd go outside but it's freezing.
Wanda : I understand, but this area is designated for quiet study only. If you want to work in a group you'll have to make a reservation in one of the private study rooms.
Ted : Ok, we really need to get some work done. So, is it possible to switch to a study room right now?
Wanda : I'm afraid not. They're all taken this afternoon. Most students make reservations at least a week in advance. Sometimes there are cancellations. In that case you might get lucky and find a free room.
Ted : And beside the private study rooms, you mean there's no place else in the library we can go to study in a group?
Wanda : Well, you could go down to the first floor and study in the lobby. There are some tables and chairs down there. You'll be able to talk freely if you don't mind the fact that everyone else will be able to also.
Ted : I see your point. It is kinda distracting down there. It might be hard to concentrate.
Wanda : Your only other option for group study is to find a quiet corner of some other building on campus. It's Saturday, so the campus is pretty dead.
Ted : We could go off campus, too, I guess.
Wanda : You could, but before you do that let me check to see if there have been any cancellations this afternoon for the private study rooms.
Ted : Thank you. We'd really appreciate that.
Day In and Day Out - Decisions, decisions
Olivia tries to decide where to live.
Fred : Hey, Olivia. What's up?
Olivia : Not too much, I'm just trying to figure out if I wanna stay on campus next year or get my own apartment.
Fred : Why would you want to stay on campus? Getting the apartment seems like an easy decision.
Olivia : It's not so easy. The apartment will cost more and there are some decent things about living on campus.
Fred : Ha! Are you pulling my leg?
Olivia : Well, I don't have to fight traffic for one thing. Also, most of what I need I can get on campus. In fact I can walk to most places I need to be. If I get the apartment, I'll have to get up at the crack of dawn to make my classes on time and I'll have to consider the gas money for my car, too. That won't be cheap.
Fred : Sounds like you've already made up your mind, then. I'd get the apartment for sure, but that's just me. I mean, I'd much rather live off campus. It's way too... I don't know... too noisy around here for one thing.
Olivia : Right. Exactly. That's one of the reasons I'm thinking about getting the apartment. Sometimes, the dorms get so loud, I can't hear myself think. I can't study like that.
Fred : I'm telling you, just get the apartment. Sure, it'll cost a little more, but you'll be happier in the end.
Olivia : I guess I could look into getting something that's nearby campus. That way I wouldn't have to worry too much about being late for class; it'd save gas money too.
Fred : It's the perfect solution to your problem. Told you the apartment was better.
Business Talk - Paperless Office
Mark's upset the price of ink.Anna is overworking.
Carla : Are you headed out to the store? Could you pick up some toner for the printer? It's running low, so I'd like to have a backup on hand.
Mark : We're out already? I just bought a cartridge last week! Who's printing so much?
Carla : I don't know. It's a netwrok printer. Everyone in the office shares it.
Mark : I'm going to have to have a talk with them. Toner doesn't grow on trees. In fact, it's more than twice the cost of gas.
Carla : I know it's pricey, but it's a work expense. I mean, telling people not to print so much is not going to make much difference. It's not as if they're printing out personal things at work. All of the printing is work related.
Mark : That may be true. But I've seen a lot of waste. How many times have I seen people print out their emails? Or, one time I saw Tim print out fifteen copies for a meeting with only five people.
Carla : Yeah, but maybe Tim didn't know how many people were going to be in the meeting. I think it's better to print out extra than not have enough. How would it look to the clients if Tim had to have them wait while he ran to make copies?
Mark : Ok, I'll grant you that, but there are still areas which could use improvement. I'd really like to make this a paperless office.
Carla : Well, we've already made significant headway. All of our order forms are electronic files and most communication is by email.
Mark : That's good, but I think we could do more. Why don't you brainstorm with Jack about some ways to cut additional paper use?
Carla : Ok, I think he's free after lunch. I'll grab him then and we'll have a proposal by tomorrow.
