서지(Surge)는 AC전압이 평상시 공급전압 범위보다 5~6%정도 상승한 상태를 말하며, 일억분의 일초 (Nanosecond), 백만분의 일초 (Microsecond), 천만분의 일초 (Millisecond) 단위의 매우 짧은 시간동안 나타났다가 사라지는 고전압 대전류의 전기적인 동요현상을 가리킨다.
예컨대 가정용으로 공급되는 220V 60Hz 교류에 낙뢰나 기타 원인으로 인해 220V 가 아닌 그 이상의 전압과 그에 동반되는 높은 에너지를 가진 비정상 파형이 순간적으로 들어오는 경우라고 할 수 있다.
이럴 경우 전자기기가 순식간에 망가질 수 있다
따라서 고가의 첨단 전기, 전자, 통신기기를 서지 전압으로부터 안전하게 보호하기 위해서는 서지프로택터(서지보호기 Surge Protector or Suppressor)의 설치가 필요하다
