[000] Now, the Rest of the Story.
[001] It was the biggest thing that had happened in Manhattan
since the Canarsie Indians sold it for about a dollar a
square mile: the 1854 World's Fair--the first ever such
held in America.
[002] Housing the magnificent exhibits was an architectural
wonder called the Crystal Palace, a gigantic domed glass
building that awe-inspired all who saw it.
[003] But then, in May, the incredible New York exhibition was
visited by a magician from Yonkers, a daredevil wizard
named Elisha Graves, and what Elisha boasted he would do
in the Crystal Palace one day in May sent chills through
the gathering throng.
[004] He might as well have said he would fly.
[005] And yet, indeed, what he proposed was more extraordinary
even than that.
[006] Elisha Graves promised that he would climb aboard a
wooden platform and make it rise into the air, suspended
only by a solitary rope, and then, when the platform was
stories high above the floor of the Crystal Palace,
almost all the way to the ceiling, an assistant would cut
the rope, and, according to Elisha, the platform would
remain suspended in midair.
[007] What particularly fascinated onlookers was that this
trick had been tried before and the results to those who
tried had been consistently fatal.
[008] But here was Elisha saying that he was going to hoist
himself up into the air and stick up there, and he was
betting his life that he can do it.
[009] The spectators did watch spellbound that day as daredevil
Elisha stepped onto that small wooden stage.
[010] And then he gave the signal.
[011] There was a creaking sound, and slowly, deliberately, the
platform rose a few inches, and then several feet above
the floor, and then 10 feet, and 20.
[012] And the higher Elisha ascended, the quieter became those
gathered below until suddenly when that wooden platform
had gone almost all the way to the roof.
[013] It stopped and hung there in the electrified air,
suspended by a single rope which rode over a pulley at
the top and was threatened by a 10 inch knife blade held
by Elisha's assistant.
[014] And Elisha Graves raised his arm.
[015] Everybody knew that when his arm dropped, it would signal
his assistant to cut the rope, and Elisha gave the
signal, and the knife sawed into the rope.
[016] And as the last strand of the rope snapped, the crowd
gasped, and nothing happened.
[017] The platform just sat there, upheld as though by magic,
and at once the onlookers burst into a deafening roar of
approval.
[018] For the small wooden stage was not suspended by magic but
rather by mechanical innovation and ingenious invention
which Elisha had bequeathed to civilization.
[019] For until that day, folks were reluctant to build a tall
building because few wanted to climb that many stairs and
hoisting platforms were no safer than the ropes that
suspended them.
[020] There were such platforms, but many had been killed
riding on them until this daring mechanical wizard
developed and demonstrated to be safe a spring-loaded
system that would hold the platform in place even when
its rope had broken, thus presenting to the world the
modern elevator.
[021] Of course, you know that inventor Elisha by his full
name: Elisha Graves Otis.
[022] Only now you know the Rest of the Story.

[000] 지금, the Rest of the Story입니다.
[022] 이제야 당신은 the Rest of the Story를 알고 계십니다.
