The future has maybe arrived on London's streets. And for 340,000 pounds, or 443,000 dollars, you too can fly. The jet suit created by a British former commodities trader is now on sale at a London department store. It's made up of five micro-jet engines on the pilot's arms and back. "They run on jet fuel but you can also run them on diesel - you create a bit of blue smoke when you shut them down but they run perfectly well on diesel. Other than that you are charging some little Lithium batteries which are what start the engines and that's it." Some compare it to Marvel superhero Iron Man. But if you think it will help the morning commute, you'll need to work close to home. It only has a flying time of three to four minutes. Another version can fly for up to nine minutes on a cold day, when you get more thrust. Something the inventor is looking to improve. The pack can do 32 miles per hour - or 52 kilometers - with an altitude limit of 12-thousand feet, nearly four thousand meters. Although its inventor hovers only just above the ground for safety reasons. "I would sort of demystify this in the sense of a bit like buying a very high-end super car or maybe a sports motorbike - a sports motorbike, if you abuse it, it can cause you a problem very quickly. The same with this; if you're sensible with it, it doesn't have to be very dangerous at all." The curious can see the suit at Selfridges in London. And anyone who decides to buy a suit will be offered training. As to what it feels like to fly? Richard Browning says the heat from the engines strangely blows away and it's surprisingly calm, and not very violent.

(2) China big-budget movie pulled after box office flop
중국 대규모 제작비 영화, 흥행 참패로 조기 종영
Alibaba's big bet to take on Hollywood's summer blockbusters has flopped. At a reported 100 million dollars - 'Asura' was being billed by the tech giant as one of China's biggest budget movies. But Alibaba Pictures said the movie was pulled from theaters after Sunday night - and apologized to viewers who wouldn't be able to see the movie. After it spent six years in the making and only brought in $7 million dollars. It's the latest home-grown disappointment for China's film industry. The $150 million "The Great Wall" starred Matt Damon - and was a co-production with Universal Pictures. It also failed to soar at the box office. China is on track to overtake the North American movie market - and it’s become a critical place for global producers looking to pump up their returns at the box office. However, 'Asura' may also be a cautionary tale for what local audiences really want. As the fantasy film flopped - box office reports showed another local movie was surprise hit - at a cost of only $15 million. 'Dying to Survive' is the real-life story of a Chinese cancer patient arrested for importing drugs from India - think 'Dallas Buyers Club'- but, in the city of Wuxi. Its returns could have paid for Asura several times over, clocking in a blowout success at $350 million dollars in sales.

(3) Walmart inks deal with Microsoft to take on Amazon
월마트, 아마존에 대항하기 위해 마이크로소프트와 계약 체결
It's not a prime day for Amazon, with thousands of employees expected to walk off the job in Germany, Spain and Poland to demand better working conditions. That's as Walmart is doubling down on its online presence to compete with Amazon. It’s signed a deal with Microsoft to make the most of the company's cloud and AI technology. Microsoft is working on tech that would eliminate checkout lines from stores to help retailers like Walmart keep pace with Amazon Go, an automated grocery store where customers can buy products without cashiers. "They can see Amazon encroaching on their space. They have on a relative basis underinvested in I.T. and technology. And so this five year strategic partnership with Microsoft is very necessary and makes perfect sense." The agreement will leverage Microsoft's cloud products including computing service Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft 365. Engineers from both companies will also work together to migrate most of the Walmart's websites to Azure, a Microsoft service that can build and deploy apps and services through its global network. With the partnership, Walmart is hoping to boost its online presence and defend itself from Amazon's ambitions.

(4) UK heatwave, World Cup snap consumers out of winter gloom
영국, 폭염과 월드컵으로 경기 반등
The UK's been feeling the heat recently, both on and off the football pitch. And consumers - it seems - are paying to cool off. Visa says most of its credit and debit card transactions in June were made at bars and restaurants with spending up by 0.7 percent from the same month a year ago. The financial service firm says spending in UK shops and retail establishments also grew more quickly than online for the second month in a row. The first time that's happened since 2012. It's all good news for the BOE, which is expected to raise rates next month, for just the second time since the global financial crisis. Earlier this year it refrained from doing so due to a winter slowdown. Consumer confidence has had a boost too. Accountancy firm Deloitte says it hit its highest level since 2011 in Q2.

(5) Machine transforms household trash into fuel
가정에서 나오는 쓰레기를 연료로 바꿔주는 기계
To most of us this is just rubbish. But to British inventor Nik Spencer it's just the fuel he needs for his Home Energy Resources Unit, or HERU. As well as organic material like food, hard-to-recycle materials - coffee cups, food-contaminated items, and even babies' nappies - all can go straight into the HERU. "..all material that would have come out of the domestic stream. So we can pop this all in, it doesn't matter. So this is a nappy for example, pop that in." Inside, a three-stage process dries out, heats and breaks down all this material into fuel to heat a household's water. "Even those really difficult plastics like coffee cups and yogurt pots and things that are really difficult to recycle, are actually made from fossil fuel essentially. They're made by man but the actual raw ingredient is a fossil fuel. And all we're doing is taking that right back to its basic form as a fuel source and then combusting that fuel source just like any other conventional boiler and making it into energy for your hot water in your home." The only items that won't break down are metals and glass, but these are more readily recycled. In the end, all that's left is small amount of alkaline-rich ash that can be safely washed down the drain. Spencer hopes the HERU will eventually become as ubiquitous as washing machines and dish washers. "From the average home, you're producing around about two-and-a-half kilos of material per day. And that two-and-a-half kilos of material will produce about 44 percent of your hot water requirements. Not your space heating, but your hot water requirements." The HERU device is on its fifth iteration and will be rolled out to three UK councils this year for field trials. The company hopes to launch a production model in 2020, costing around £4,000.
