December 28, 1934.
On the 27th or 28th, at the site of Chrysanthemum in Hibiya, a dog fair was held sponsored by the Central Dog Association. 300 pet dogs of various households gathered. All of the dog breeders boasted of their excellence. .
In the midst of it, two wretched stray dogs with their ears pricked up like foxes, their mouths pricked, and even their hair the color of fox, were joking around in chains. It is a breed of wild dog that was born deep in the mountains of Kaga Province.
Mr. Kosuge Yonesaku, who is the secretary of the exhibitor's association and the head of the Osaka branch, says: "Even though Tosa Inu and Akita Inu are all mixed with some Western breeds, this is a wild dog and is a completely pure Japanese breed." It's a very eccentric way of taming wild dogs, and from about 10 o'clock in the evening they go out and attack foxes, raccoon dogs, and other animals. The Ministry of Home Affairs' Scenic Sites and Historic Sites and Natural Monuments Preservation Society would like to receive research materials, but Mr. Kosuge refuses, intending to conduct in-depth research into his own skills. From the age of eighteen to the age of forty, he is an enthusiastic researcher who continues his research on the dog."
The Japanese dog preservation movement in the Taisho era (1912-1926) stagnated, and was restarted with the establishment of the Japanese Dog Preservation Society in 1928. Since then, the Ministry of Education (transferred from the Ministry of Home Affairs) has been promoting the designation of natural monuments linked to regional characteristics, the Japanese Dog Preservation Society has standardized three types: large, medium and small, and the Japanese Dog Association has been working to improve and create new Japanese dogs.
In 1934, the hunting dogs that had been called "Tateyama," "Ono," and "Noto" were named "Koshi no Inu." (Tateyama-ken or Hakusan-ken. Dr. Kaburagi Tokio, who was entrusted with the designation work by the Ministry of Education, was instrumental in its designation as a natural monument.
On August 28th, Dr. Kaburagi Soto, a member of the research team for Natural Monuments and a professor at the University of Agriculture, gathered 40 Japanese dogs in front of the Kanazawa City Assembly Building on the same day to investigate the Japanese dogs of Ishikawa Prefecture, and appraised them. In addition, we visited Japanese dogs in neighboring towns and villages, the area around Noto Anamizu on the 29th, and the Enuma district on the 30th. The so-called pure Japanese dogs produced in the Noto, Echizen, and Etchu regions of Kaga should be referred to the Natural Monuments Investigation Committee under the name of 'Koshi-no-Inu' and designated as such."
IN THE SAME YEAR, THE KOSHINO DOG PRESERVATION SOCIETY WAS ESTABLISHED UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE ISHIKAWA PREFECTURAL SHRINES AND TEMPLES MILITARY AFFAIRS, AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY, AND SECURITY SECTIONS. MR. TAKESHIGE TOBIMI, A DOG LOVER AND A MEMBER OF THE TOYAMA ASSOCIATION, HAS DESIGNATED TWO TYPES OF GENUINE JAPANESE DOGS FROM TOYAMA PREFECTURE, ONE WITH A LARGE SIZE OF ABOUT 10 KG AND ONE WITH A MEDIUM SIZE OF ABOUT 6 KG, AS NATURAL MONUMENTS, AND THAT THEIR BREEDING BE PROTECTED. (NATURAL MONUMENT DESIGNATED DATE DECEMBER 28, 1934)
At the end of the same year, the Ministry of Education designated Koshi no Inu as a natural monument. By the time the Sino-Japanese War began, Ishikawa Prefecture also had its own registration system.
The "Koshi-no-Inu" of the Hokuriku region, which was designated as a natural monument for the purpose of preserving the extinct pure Japanese dog breed, was finally established. Owners of Koshi-no-Inu in towns and villages are now required to register their coat color, characteristics, shoulder height, body weight, etc. with photographs. Thanks to conservation efforts in Fukui, Toyama, and Ishikawa prefectures, Koshi dogs survived the wartime regime.
However, in 1970, the last one, "Mari," died. Extinct as a pure dog breed.
Chuo Dog Association's "The Specialty of the Festival is a Wild Dog Climbing a Tree (1923)", Dr. Kaburagi's Visit to Ishikawa Agata (1934), Fukui's Great Wild Dog (February 1934), Movement in Toyama Prefecture (February 1934), "Koshi Dog Examination Regulations (1937)".
