To live happily, you should be able to feel happy
not only when you spend time with people
you either like or love but also when you are alone.
Man comes to this world alone without any companion
and leaves it alone without any companion;
so, it's quite natural for him to spend most of his time alone.
Advancement of modern medicine has sharply increased
the average span of a man's life, which fact makes him
spend much more time alone than before.
So, to find a thing you can enjoy yourself with
is the secret to happiness.
If you do what you like to do,
whether it is painting, writing or growing flowers,
you will feel enjoyable and happy, losing track of the time.
However, if you feel happy only when you mingle with others,
it's like relying on others for your happiness,
and you may be likely to get hurt and become unhappy.
Everyone has the right to be happy as long as he lives in this world.
If he feels happy only when he mingles with others,
it's like giving up his right to be happy.
According to the history of 3 Chinese States,
they believed that any lord who gains the services of
both Zhuge Liang and Pang Tong could unite China.
However, Liu Bei who gained both men's services
ignored the wise counsel of Zhuge Liang
and died after losing the battle with Sun Quan.
Zuge Liang and Pang Tong also died
without seeing their dream come true.
Both Confucius and Mencius, despite their enormous talent,
left the world without realizing their dream of
applying their Megali ideas to reality.
Just their words and writings have survived
to help the posterity be a decent humanbeing.
Thus men of such greatness ended up in failure;
How can I, a humble individual, expect to see
even half my dream come true easily in my lifetime?
Mr. Hong Gil Yeom, the extraordinary mountaineer,
who conquered 16 Himalyan mountain summits,
said that he can gain the summit only when God permits.
The dream I cherish in my heart is really big
but only God knows whether I can make it come true or not.
If I accumulate my sincere effort endlessly for a long time,
I may be able to make my dream come true even partially
when God permits, and leave the world satisfied with it.
Man grows as he reflects on himself
and finds new enlightenment through self-reflection.
He who never reflects on his conduct
just busying himself to justify it has no chance to grow.
Today's self-reflection can be a good judge
of your conduct until yesterday;
Tomorrow's self-reflection can be a good judge
of your conduct until today.
Life is stacking up.
Man leaves the world after stacking up something good or bad
during his lifetime.
Stack up memory abominable to someone
and he will regard you as a demon sooner or later
Stack up memory good and beautiful to someone
and he will regard you as an angel sooner or later.
A bricklayer stacks up bricks;
A scholar stacks up knowledge on his special field;
An artist stacks up his elaborate work of art;
A businessman stacks up the profit he gains
as the result of meeting the demand in the market economy.
All of them have one thing in common
that they cannot stack up anything better with time
unless they reflect on themselves and find enlightenment.
This is true of health, longevity, and business.
Through your self-reflection and enlightenment,
stack up for long something gradually getting better with time
that can be conducive to your health, longevity and business,
and you will enjoy health, longevity and achieve a great work,
as they say that Rome was not built in a day.
You can make the best decision
when your heart is full of love
devoid of any jealousy, hatred or anger.
The decision you make out of anger
tends to be the worst one
that might drive you to destruction.
When anger burns down the last bit of your patience,
put off any decision or action
until you fully recover your peace of mind.
And do not forget even for a moment
that spitting on gold doesn't change it to lead,
that affronting a noble man doesn't change him
to a man of small character,
that both the spit on gold and affornt against a noble man
will be washed away with time,
and that the vast reaches of time, just like a touchstone,
will prove the right and wrong of all human deeds.
He who is strong when alone
is really strong.
He who can entertain himself when alone
is a real entertainer.
Man comes to this world alone
and leaves alone.
He finds it hard to control himself alone;
That's why just a few hold out their hand
to console others after controlling themseves
For this reason, man's effort
to seek solace in someone else
mostly ends up in disappointment.
For happiness and longevity,
there is no wiser way of life than
to strengthen and entertain oneself.
If you are not loved by someone, ask yourself if you did
what makes you deserve his love.
If you are now impoverished, ask yourself if you provided
goods or services the world needed when the world needed.
If there is no cause, there is no effect.
You receive something only when you give something.
However, if you give something expecting to receive,
the thing you receive looks small, makes you unhappy.
and if you give something without expecting to receive,
the thing you receive looks big, makes you happy.
Think the world a cold place and curl yourself up,
and you will really find a cold wind rise,
Think the world a warm place and pull yourself up,
and you will really find a warm wind rise.
Thus happiness and unhappiness depend on your thought and attitude;
so, if you are unhappy now, you yourself are to blame, not the world.
What shall I do and how shall I do it
at this sad hour
when the sun slants to the west
and the young energy that invigorated me
now slowly starts draining from me?
Your face as well as mine
is now covered with irremovable wrinkle,
the trace of years you and I spent together.
However, I do remember what you were like,
a woman more beautiful than a flower.
As long as I remember it,
you are the most beautiful woman
I want to sleep with in the bed of eternity.
People of my age I either knew or liked
leave the world one by one,
which makes me realize I am also standing,
whether I like it or not, in a long line to the grave,
even though I cannot tell when my turn will arrive.
I ask myself what I should do
to bring my life to a successful conclusion
as the ark of time I am aboard
mindlessly follows the setting sun.
First of all, I'll have to make the complicated things I started
open and shut; and continue to make my loved ones happy,
while living like indispensable but invisible air until I die.
Thus I might remain in the hearts of those I made happy
as a warm memory like a hot yam on a cold winter day
even after I have turned into a handful of cold ash.
Just like a movie ends
when its running time is up
regardless of its content,
Your life ends
when your lifetime is up,
regardelss of how you have lived it.
Even if a mountain crumbles down on you
and even if tsunami swallows you,
do something good and positive
you can do in the given situation.
Do not turn your eyes to even the slightest wrong
or negative thing
and you will be remembered as a good man.
The only things you leave behind in this world
are your name and memories of you the world remembers.
What a blessing it is for me
to share the same air and same sky
with you who are so cute and so pretty!
You cried looking back on me over and over again
on the night you left me as your mom pulled your hand,
which sticks to my mind and keeps me weeping tears,
You make me go forward;
You keep me from feeling lonely;
You make me try to be a better man;
and you give me courage to win through this tough world with.
My baby, you are a blessing God granted me
to compensate all the troubles at once
that I had sufferd since my birth in this world;
and the memory I share with you is a solace
my soul needs on its way to the otherworld.
A few decades still available to us until our death
should not be the setting sun vanishing quietly,
but should be an impressive symphony.
They should not be pianissimo but fortissimo.
To make up for the 3 decades we wasted,
the first decade we wasted due to immaturity,
the second decade we wasted wandering,
and the third decade we wasted blaming our fate,
we must seize, with glaring eyes, even a minute,
and even a second to dedicate it to the altar of love.
Any minute or second not being dedicated to the altar of love
should not be spent without the pain piercing our heart.
We should burn and offer our body and mind to the altar of love,
even its cinders to the last grain.
And then we should make our soul vividly remember
that our lives have been an impressive symphony
before it leaves for the otherworld.
Whether you are now walking on the hot sand
under the scorching sun,
or walking on the thorny path under the cold moon,
or whistling in the flower garden in the breeze,
you are now living this moment, which is your life.
Your past is just a reference
to what you want to do from now
and your future is just a dark void
where unexpected obstacles wait for you.
However, this moment is all you can enjoy
and therefore should be sacred and pleasant.
At this moment, be pure, humble and naked,
seeing the best you can see
and creating the best you can create.
Before I knew it, the river of time flowed
and the boat I am aboard
passed its middle course
and now I can see its estuary far ahead.
Off the estuary, there is a black sea
where mountainous waves billow endlessly
toward an unknowable place.
As soon as I reach the estuary,
I'll be pushed into the sea.
Just oblivion rules the sea
where there is not a single life
However, that's the place I must go
unavoidablly one day;
I just wish to really slow down from here.
If possible, I wish to row against the river.
If not possible to do so,
I wish to stay here for a long time
singing of my remaining life with you, my love.
My love for you has been always incomplete.
Sometimes what I said off the top of my head
hurt your feelings.
Sometimes I ignored your earnest desire
obssessed with the things of the world.
By making you happy, the one closest to me,
I would be able to proudly stand before the world.
By winning your heart, the one closest to me,
I would be able to win the heart of the world.
In the twilight years of my life
after wasting my flowery days,
I find my love for you still incomplete.
It is inevitability that rules the world.
Inevitability is the product of sweat and tears.
A beginner's luck or fluke is just a candle in the wind,
a sand castle before waves.
Just a tower of inevitability built for long by sweat and tears
keeps the builder's name on it through the test of time.
