In the next couple photos, I swapped the adapters. The Suzuki transmission readily accepted the Montero's adapter, but the Suzuki adapter didn't fully seat on the Montero tranny. If you look on the inside the TracKick 03-72LE/t-case adapter, you'll notice there's a slight ridge on the base and an electronic pickup on the wall. Both of these will have to be removed as they interfere with the AW372L's governor. You should also note that the output shaft seals have different OD and will require you to locate a suitable replacement.

In the final photo, you can easily see that the two output housing bolt patterns are identical. However, you can also see that the same cannot be said for the output shafts. While both shafts have the same length (2.25") and are the same diameter where they exit the transmission, the Montero shaft has is 1 3/16" diameter thick throughout whereas the TracKick shaft starts out with a 1 3/16" thick diameter near the transmission and then tapers down to 15/16" diameter where it fits into the TracKick t-case input shaft.

I haven't done much research on output shafts for these transmissions yet, but I did speak with Dave Ostermiller over at Novak Conversions and was told that if they didn't already have an adapter/shaft that would work for your mod, they might be willing to make it if they had enough interest (around 15-20 preorders to justify the cost of tooling).

yes it does, thanks my biggest concern was spline size and count. i will have to pick up a tranny and see about having the shaft turned and resplined then heat treaded agian, or by chance see if the shafts will interchange, but i dont think they will because of the governor. they wont with the volvo tranny.thanks for your time and input

One final thought sami. I already had a 03-72LE from a '99 Tracker that I bought as a core for $25. I knew that whatever I eventually came up with, I would need alot of parts from a LE to make this mod work and a core tranny would save me time and money in the long run. I suggest you do the same. Just make sure that when you go to buy your core, you do like I did and take everything!!! I took all the cables, the shift lever, the tranny hoses, the flywheel... I even took those two adapters on either side of the flywheel and all the brackets.
Good luck with your LJ10. Sounds like a fun project.

Here the two trannys are sitting side by side. While the engine side of the bellhousing bolt patterns are obviously different, if you look close you'll see the tranny sides are the same. You'll also see that the front pump housings are identical. In fact, when compared to a non-lockup Volvo AW72, I found they both had a little "L" whereas the Volvo tranny did not. Possible casting mark indicating its a lockup???
Anyway, after unbolting the bellhousings, they slid off with minor assistance from a rubber mallet. A couple of notes here: 1). There is an o-ring seal that sits between the bellhousing and the main housing that can be damaged and is probably difficult to replace. 2). The Suzuki housing has a sensor on the left side that MUST be removed previous to attempting to slide the housing off (I mistakenly disassembled the Suzuki's pump before I figured that out).
The Sidekick's 03-72LE bellhousing slipped easily onto the Montero's AW372L main body with no help from any 'gentle persuader' and bolted down without incident. Here's a shot of the AW372L tranny with the 03-72LE bell housing bolted in place.

OK... here's were I eat a bit of crow. Earlier in this post I made the claim that the output housing on the Montero tranny would accept the D300/Atlas t-case directly. This is ALMOST correct. The bolt patterns and the shaft sizes are identical, but the cup inside the stock Montero adapter is too shallow by approximately 1/2". I ordered the #153 clocking ring kit from Novak Adapters (http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_153.htm) for around $80. Perfect fit, fixed the depth issue, and I now have the ability to clock the t-case.

Here's the gravy. That's a bone-stock Dana 300 (think Atlas doubler), married to the back end of a NON-ELECTRONIC shifted 4sp OD AT tranny, bolted to the back of a stock 1.6L 16v Suzuki Sidekick engine, and all done with OFF-THE-SHELF parts. It uses the stock 03-72LE flywheel, torque converter and starter. The output seal on the tranny is the stock Montero seal. Also, the overall length is roughly about the same as the stock Suzuki 5sp/t-case setup, so no extensive mods are required for this conversion.

There are some issues, to be sure.
· The tranny mount needs to be reworked (planned on making new x-member anyway).
· The shift arm is on the opposite side (swappable from 03-72LE).
· The kick-down cable needs to be changed(swappable from 03-72LE).
· The sensor hole in the bellhousing needs to be plugged.
Just make sure the two transmissions you start with are COMPLETE. That means TAKE EVERYTHING and cut NOTHING. The trannys are compatible but NOT identical. You will need parts from both to make this mod work.
My next mod will be to make a new flat x-member to mount to the stock TracKick frame mounting locations.
