Everyone needs to rest, not only through sleep but through deep relaxation. Too little of either causes irritability, depression, inability to concentrate, and memory loss. Yoga is a great way to unwind, stretch and tone the muscles, and focus energy. Many people find that meditation is essential for relaxation and renewal. What meditation requires is just to create a time for yourself when your mind is free to rest and quiet itself. Other people recommend visualization -imagining something by forming a mental picture of it - as another powerful technique for relaxing your body.
Q : What is this passage about? ① Getting the rest and relaxation you need ② Definition of visualization ③ Why we need relaxation sometimes ④ Differences between Yoga and meditation |

One of the most urgent problems in teaching handwriting is presented by the left-handed child. The traditional policy has been to attempt to induce all children to write with their right hands. Parents and teachers alike have an antipathy to the child's using his left hand. On the other hand, psychologists have shown beyond a doubt that some persons are naturally left-handed and that it is much more difficult for them to do any skilled act with the right hand than with the left hand. Some believe, furthermore, that to compel a left-handed child to write with his right hand may make him nervous and may cause stammering. There seems to be some cases in which this is true, although in the vast majority of children who change over, no ill effects are noticed. In addition to these difficulties, left-handedness sometimes seems to cause mirror writing - writing from right to left-hand reversals in reading, as reading "was" for "saw." |
1. The author implies that ___________________________________________.
① parents should break children of left-handedness
② left-handed children are inclined to stutter
③ left-handed children need special consideration
④ left-handed persons are not more brilliant than right-handed ones
2. The title below that best expresses the ideas of the passage is ________________.
① Nervous Aspects Connected with Handwriting
② Teaching Handwriting
③ The Problems of the Left-Handed Child
④ A Special Problem in Teaching Handwriting

Some geographers say that urbanization is a good thing because it relieves pressure on the land and in many countries on the land there are too many people for the work available. Others consider that urbanization is a bad thing because a city depends very much on food being supplied from the surrounding countryside. In countries where there are already very great problems of food supply, this massive increase in the size of towns will place a tremendous strain on the surrounding agricultural areas. Moreover, it is generally the young and active members of the population who tend to migrate, leaving the old people, the children, and the infirm to run the farms, which is hardly likely to improve the efficiency of the farms. There is thus a decline in rural industries and food supply. |
1. The above passage is most probably about _________________.
① urbanization in different perspectives
② the problems of urbanization
③ urbanization as a process of industrialization
④ food supply and efficient land use
2. People in favor of urbanization __________________.
① are generally geographers
② argue that cities need more manpower
③ think that there are too many people for the work available on farms
④ tend to ignore the problems of housing and food shortage in large cities
3. According to the passage, which of the following arises from urbanization?
① The agricultural areas surrounding big cities become less productive.
② The old people and the children become worse off.
③ Land becomes less fertile.
④ Farmers become more inactive.

It seems hard to imagine a world without plastics. So many of the items we use every day are made of plastic. The first plastic was synthesized in 1909. A synthetic material is any that is manufactured from chemicals in factories, as opposed to naturally occurring materials, like cotton or wood. Plastics are made primarily from petroleum products and have many advantages over natural products. For one thing, they may be less expensive to produce. More important, however, is that they are light and malleable. Parts for automobiles, aircraft, and many appliances can be easily crafted by plastics. Special kinds of plastics are used for different jobs. Nylon, an elastic synthetic resin, is a type of plastic that can be used to make clothing. |
1. According to the passage, one of the primary advantages of plastic is _______________________________.
① its ability to make cloth ② its flexibility
③ its cost ④ its color
2. The passage is mainly concerned with _____________________________.
① the usefulness of nylon
② the use of petroleum products
③ the ecological dangers associated with plastics
④ the advantages of plastic

The Greenhouse Effect is causing a general warning of the world. Climatologists are predicting that there will be more droughts and more floods. Soil erosion will also become an increasing problem is semi-arid lands. However, there will be beneficial to other areas of the world where agricultural production will increase. An example is Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, Which will experience a temperature rise of 4 degrees Celsius within the next 50 years, and it is predicted that this will increase rice production fourfold. In Iceland and Finland, land fit for pasture could increase by 50% and yields of hay could increase by 60%. |
1. Which of the following assumption is correct in planning for future food production?
① The climate of northern parts of the world will be unaffected
② Pasture land will decrease in area.
③ The Greenhouse Effect will have a positive effect on certain areas of the world only.
④ Japan will increase its rich production fourfold.

Imagine the implications of receiving even a simple message from an advanced extraterrestrial civilization. Such a message would clearly reveal that there are other beings in the universe and probably, as Darwinian evolution would predict, that those other beings are astonishingly different from us. The receipt of a signal from hundreds or more light-years away would pose no imminent physical threat to the human community, but arrival of such message could nevertheless have a powerful integrating influence on the nations of the planet earth. I believe that the discovery of a formidable non-human society up there in the sky would make the differences that divide us down here on earth increasingly more trivial. |
1. According to Darwinism, what would other beings in the outer space be like?
① They would be surprisingly different form us.
② They would be quite threatening to us.
③ There is no telling what they would be like.
④ They would be far more advanced than we.
2. What effect would the arrival of a message from the universe have on the nations on earth?
① The human community would regard it as an imminent physical threat.
② It would bring them together in a joint effort in the future.
③ It would have no effect for the time being.
④ It would divide the nations into several groups.
3. According to the writer, the discovery of a dreadful non-human society in the outer space would make us realize that _________________________.
① Darwinian prediction was right.
② we should fight against other beings in the universe.
③ other beings in the universe have quite a powerful influence.
④ we are contending with each other about quite insignificant matters.

- 언급된 지문에서 부분적인 내용을 직접적으로 묻는 문제이므로 이는 관련 지문을 찾아서 답을 골라야 하는데, “as Darwinian evolution would predict, that those other beings are astonishingly different from us.”
- detail을 묻는 문제이므로 관련 지문을 찾아서 정답을 고르는데, “but arrival of such message could nevertheless have a powerful integrating influence on the nations of the planet earth.”
“I believe that the discovery of a formidable non-human society up there in the sky would make the differences that divide us down here on earth increasingly more trivial.”
