2. Key Expressions
4. Dialogue
5. Tips
6. Drill
7. Review
A : Round trip is 950 dollars and one way is 500 dollars.
B : (I'd like a) Round trip (ticket), please.
I'd like a round trip ticket, please.
Round trip, please.
Which airline flies / goes there? Which
airline flies there? 또는 Which airline goes there?
Chapter 1. Making Flight Reservation
Key Expressions 1
1) I wonder if you have flights L.A. to New York on May 2nd.
2) United and American Airlines have services from L.A. to New York.
3) All the lines are busy at the moment.
4) Please hold the line.
5) Any flights available in the morning hours?
6) I'd like to make a reservation from L.A. to New York, JFK on May 2nd.
7) Let me check (it for you).
8) Any earlier flights?
9) There's no difference in fares.
10) How much is the fare for flight UA 723?
11) How do you spell your (last) name, please?
12) May I have your name, please?
13) C, as in Charlie.
14) How would you like to pay?
15) By credit card.
16) When's the expiration date?
17) Would you like to book a return flight, too?
18) Make it open, please.
19) You are now booked on UA flight 723.
20) You can pick up your ticket at the airport counter.
21) (Is there) Anything I can do for you, sir?
22) That would be it.
23) I'll would that.
Dialogue 1.1
Agent : Northwest Airline reservation. How can I help you?
Lee : (I) Wonder if you have a flight from L.A. to New York on May 2nd.
Agent : I'm afraid, we don't.
Lee : Could you tell me which airline goes / flies there?
Agent : Of course. Let's see. (After working on keyboards) United and American Airlines
have services from L.A. to New York.
Lee : Thank you.
Tips 1.1
Thank you for calling
United. If you need departure and arrival information, press 1, and if you need reservations,
press 2, and for all the other information, please press 3. Thank you.
All the lines are busy at the moment.
please hold the line and the next available operator will help you.
2) All the lines are busy at the moment. 현재 모든 회선이 통화 중이다. at the moment는 now
3) hold the line, 전화를 끊지 않고 기다리다. stay on the line으로도 표현한다.
4) I wonder if ~는 Do~ 를 쓰는 의문문보다 덜 직선적인 표현이다.
는 현재형이 아닌 I was wondering if ~처럼 과거형으로 써야 적당하다.
Northwest services from Detroit to New York 3 times a day.
Cars should be serviced regularly. My car's being serviced today.
Dialogue 1.2
Agent : American Airline reservations. May I help you?
Lee : I was wondering whether you have flights from L.A. to New York on May 2nd.
Agent : Sure, we do.
Lee : Any flights available in the morning hours?
Agent : No, sir. Sorry. We have only afternoon and evening flights (available).
Lee : I see. Thanks.
Tips 1.2
1) Sure, we do. 이것은 Certainly. 또는 Of course. 여기서 We sure do.
다른 의미가 되는데, 이때의 뜻은 We definitely have it.(확실히 있다)이 된다.
2) Any flights available in the morning hours? 이것을 더 줄이면 Any morning flights?
Dialogue 1.3
Agent : United Airline reservations. May I help you?
Lee : I'd like to make a reservation from L.A. to New York, JFK on May 2nd.
Agent : O.K. Let me check. Yes, we have flight UA 123, Leaving L.A. at 8 a.m. and arriving
in New York, JFK at 4 p.m.
Lee : Any earlier flights?
Agent : Sorry, we have only later flights (available).
Lee : I see. When's the next flight, then?
Agent : We have one leaving at 11 a.m., that's UA 125.
Tips 1.3
1) want to~ 나 wish to~ 보다는 I'd like to ~를 쓰는 것이 더 부드러운 표현이며, 친하지 않은
상대방과 대화 시에는 I'd like to를 쓰는 것이 무난하다.
2) I'd like to make a reservation (from L.A.) to New York, JFK.
make a reservation 자리에 reserve a seat 으로 바꿀 수 있다.
3) 미국의 New York, Washington D.C., Chicago 같은 대도시나 유럽의 London, Paris등은 공항
1> New York : JFK(John F. Kennedy) Airport, La Guardia Airport
2> Washington D.C. : Dulles Airport, National Airport
3> Chicago : O' Hare Airport, Midway Airport
4> London : Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport
5> Paris : Orly Airport, Charles De Gaulle Airport
6> Tokyo : Narita Airport, Haneda Airport
4) Let me check (it for you). I'll check (it for
you). Let me have a
look at it. Let me know the result, please. Let me help you.
5) Any earlier flights? Do you have any earlier flights available,
then?
Dialogue 1.4
Agent : British Airways reservations. May I help you?
Lee : Yes, I'd like to reserve two seats from L.A. to London on May 2nd, please.
Agent : O.K. We have flight BA 325, departing L.A. at 8 a.m. and arriving in London,
Heathrow at 7 p.m.
Lee : Well, I'm going to Brighton, about 100 miles south of London. Is Heathrow airport
more convenient?
Agent : If you're going to Brighton, (then) the Gatwick airport would be more convenient for
you.
Lee : (Do) You have also a flight available (from L.A.) to London, Gatwick?
Agent : No direct flights, sir. Sorry. But if you transfer at Amsterdam, (then) you could get
to London, Gatwick. There's no difference in fares.
Lee : I see. Let me think about it.
Tips 1.4
2) There's no difference in fares.
3) Let me think about it.
Hot Dog
나온 것을 보고 이 친구 왈 "Oh, no ! not this
part, please."
Dialogue 1.5
Lee : I'm calling to check the fares. How much is the fare for the flight from L.A. to New
York, JFK?
Agent : Round trip is 950 dollars and one way is 500 (dollars).
Lee : (I'd like a) Round trip (ticket), please.
Agent : May I have your name, please?
Lee : Sure, my name is Chul Soo Lee, last name is L-E-E.
Agent : How do you spell your first name, please?
Lee : C, as in Charlie, and H-U-L-S-O-O.
Tips 1.5
1)How much is the fare? 예를 들어 a taxi fare, a bus fare 등. 같
은 의미로 What's the price? How much is the price?
즉 an
admission/entrance fee...입장료, a fee for a doctor's visit...의사의 왕진료, a toll gate...
등의 요금징수소, a toll free number...
도매가, price 대신 fee나 cost는 못 쓴다. a retail price...
을 나타낼 때 one-way / round-trip fare, Europe에서는 single / double fare로도 쓴다.
3) May I have your name, please? 상대방의 이름을 물을 때 What's your name?
Could I ask your name, please?
How do you spell your last / first name, please?
4) C, as in Charlie.
'B' as in Boy. 'D' as in David. 'F' as in Frank.
'G' as in George. 'H' as in Harry. 'J' as in Jason. 'M' as in Mary. 'N' as in Nancy. 'P' as
in Peter. 'S' as in Sam. 'V' as in Victor.
Make a comparison under the same conditions. Make
a comparison on the same basis. Do not compare an apple with an
orange.
an apple-to-apple comparison.
Dialogue 1.6
Agent : Let me book you on flight UA 123. How would you like to pay?
Lee : By credit card.
Agent : May I have your credit card number, please?
Lee : Sure, I have a Visa card, 1234-5678-8765-4321.
Agent : When's the expiration date?
Lee : July 99.
Tips 1.6
How would / do you like to pay? How
are you going to pay?
2) by credit card 신용카드로 지불할 때 쓰는 표현. by 대신 with로 써도 좋다.
3) When's the expiration date? When's it expired?
Dialogue 1.7
Agent : How would you like to pay?
Lee : (I'll pay in) Cash, please.
Agent : But, we need to have your credit card number to guarantee your reservation. Of
course, you can pay (in) cash when you pick up the ticket at the airport counter, or at one
of our branch offices.
Lee : O.K. Here's my American Express Card number.
Tip 1.7
1) 현금 지불시 Cash, please. 또는 I'll pay (in) cash.
I'll pay by cash.
Dialogue 1.8
Agent : Would you like to book a return flight, too?
Lee : No, make it open, please.
Agent : All right sir. You are now booked on UA flight 123, leaving L.A. at 8 a.m., arriving
in New York, JFK at 4 p.m. on May 2nd, and I've made your return ticket open. Your
confirmation number is B, as in Boy, 3-4-5-6. You can pick up your tickets at the airport
counter, and please make sure (that) you'd be there at least hour before departure time. Also
you will need to bring your identification. (Is there) Anything else I can do for you, sir?
Lee : No, thanks. That would be it.
Agent : Thank you for choosing United and have a nice trip!
Tips 1.8
1) You are booked on UA flight 123.
We book you on UA flight 123. 명사형은 booking. Do you need
a hotel booking?
2) Make it open, please.
I'd like a round-trip ticket with an open return, please.
3) pick up the ticket 여기서는 표를 찾는다는 의미이다. pick up은 '물건을 가져오다', '사람을 차
I pick up bits of information from
the morning paper.
4) confirmation number
5) make sure (that) ~ , ~을 확실히 해두다.
7) Anything else I can do for you?
8) Have a nice trip!
Have a nice trip back.
Dialogue 1.9
Agent : Would you like to book a return flight?
Lee : Yes, please. I'll be coming back to L.A. on May 5th.
Agent : We have a couple of flights from New York, JFK to L.A. on May 5th. One at 12
noon and another one at 4 p.m.
Lee : What time does the 4 p.m. flight arrive in L.A.?
Agent : 7 p.m. sit.
Lee : Good. I'll take that.
Tips 1.9
1) a couple of 라는 표현은 2번을 나타낸다.
couple of를 쓰면 안되고 a few, several 또는 many라고 써야 옳다.
12 midnight.
3) I'll take that. '그것으로 하겠어요'하는 표현인데 이것도 Let me take that.

the Larry Bird.

Chapter 2. Looking for Cheaper Tickets
(New York, Boston, Detroit
Key Expression 2
1) That sounds very expensive.
2) That's the lowest we have.
3) It makes a couple of stops on the way to New York.
4) You're Looking for a real cheap one.
5) I got ripped off.
6) You're paying the full fare.
7) You should book a flight at least two weeks in advance.
8) It's beyond my budget.
9) Do you have any money-saving offers?
10) We do have some with restrictions attached.
11) You must fly during the weekdays to qualify for this offer.
12) It's final.
13) What if I change my reservation?
14) It will perfectly work in that case.
15) I'll go with that.
16) You're all set.
Dialogue 2.1
Agent : Round trip from L.A. to New York is 950 dollars. It's a non-stop service.
Lee : Wow ! That sounds very expensive.
Agent : Yeah, it does. That's because you have to pay the regular fare.
Lee : Do you have a cheaper one?
Agent : Well, for a non-stop service, that's the lowest we have. But we do have a less
expensive one, 700 dollars for a round trip, but it makes a couple of stops on the way to
New York, one at Denver, Colorado and another one at Columbus, Ohio.
Lee : It's a little cheaper, but it still seems expensive to me.
Agent : Well, if you looking for a real(ly) cheap one, we have the red-eye, departing L.A. 12
midnight and arriving in New York 7 a.m., the next day. It's 550 dollars.
Lee : Fine. I'll take that, please.
Agent : Sure, let me book you on the red-eye, it's flight UA 232.
Lee : Thank you.
Tips 2.1
2) 비싸다고 생각할 경우, It is expensive.
지다라는 표현은 It's a rip-off.
4) the lowest we have. 상점에서는 보통 the lowest we
5) We do have a less expensive one.

Dialogue 2.2
Agent : Round trip from L.A. to New York is 950 dollars.
Lee : Wow! That sounds very expensive.
Agent : Well, you're paying the full fare. If you book a flight two weeks in advance, it's
only 750 dollars for a round trip, non-stop service.
Lee : Oh, I see. Next time, I will sure do that.
Tips 2.2
Dialogue 2.3
Agent : 950 dollars for a round-trip.
Lee : Wow! It seems to be beyond my budget. Do you have any money-saving offers /
alternatives?
Agent : Yes, we do have some with restrictions attached.
Lee : Beg your pardon?
Agent : I mean... you must fly during the weekdays and spend weekends at your destination
to qualify (for this offer). And, once you make a reservation, it's final, you may not change
it.
Lee : What if I change my reservation?
Agent : Then, you have to pay the regular fare.
Lee : Oh, I see. How much is that money-saving offer?
Agent : It would be 700 dollars for a round-trip.
Tips 2.3
여기서 over또는
under my budget으로 표현하지 않는다. I've overrun / underrun my budget.
2) money-saving offer / alternative
3) some restrictions attached 제한조건이 붙은.
4) to qualify for 자격을 갖추다. 윗문장에서 for this offer는 생략 가능하다.
의미 No changes are allowed.
6) What if~ , What would happen if ~ 의 의미.
Dialogue 2.4
Lee : I see what you mean. If I fly on May 2nd, Friday to New York, and come back on
May 5th Monday to L. A., then I can take your money-saving offer. Right?
Agent : Yes, sir. It will perfectly work (in that case).
Lee : Fine. Let me go with that.
Agent : All right. It'll be an excellent choice if you don't change your schedule. Can I get
your name and credit card number, please?
Lee : Sure. I have a Diners Card, 1234-1234-5678-5678.
Agent : O.K. You're all set now. Please don't forget (that) you'll be charged 250 dollars
more, when you change flights.
Lee : O.K. I won't.
Tips 2.4
1) It will (perfectly) work. 여기서 work
2) go with ~ , ~으로 택하다. go for~ 로도 쓴다.
3) You'll be charged 250 dollars more.
4) You're all set.
On your mark, get set~으로 쓴다.
해답(p.52에서)

Review 2
Lee : What's the round-trip fare from L.A. to New York?
Agent : It's 950 dollars.
Lee : Wow! That sounds quite expensive. Do you have a cheaper one?
Agent : Well, you could get a discount, only if you book flight at least two weeks in
advance. Now you're making a reservation for tomorrow's flight, 950 dollars is the lowest
(price) we have for a non-stop flight. But, we do have a less expensive one that makes a
couple of stopovers on the way to New York.
Lee : What's the arrival time in New York, JFK with that flight?
Agent : It's 11 p.m.
Lee : Um... it sounds a little bit too late.
Agent : We also have money-saving offers available with some restrictions.
Lee : Beg your pardon?
Agent : I mean... you must travel during weekdays and spend weekends at your destination
to qualify for a discounted fare. Moreover, once you make a reservation, it's final, you may
not change it.
Lee : I'm afraid I couldn't go for that, since my schedule in New York should be very
flexible. Do I have any other choices?
Agent : Well, if you're looking for a really cheap one, I would suggest the red-eye, leaving
L.A. 12 midnight and arriving in New York, JFK 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. It's only 550
dollars.
Lee : (It) Sounds good to me. Let me take that, please.
Chapter 3. Changing/Cancelling Flight Reservations

Key Expressions 3
1) I'd like to change (my) reservation.
2) I cancelled your flight on May 2nd.
3) It's (all) sold out.
4) I can check another airlines for you.
5) Here we go!
6) Can I be waitlisted on that flight?
7) I'll take the chance.
8) I'll put your name on the waiting list.
9) Any chances to get a seat?
10) Chances are very slim.
11) It would be better for you to try other airlines.
12) I'd like to reconfirm my flight to L.A.
13) Your flight is confirmed.
14) You can reach me anytime after 10 p.m.
Dialogue 3.1
Agent : United Airline reservations. May I help you?
Lee : Yes, please. I'd like to change my reservation. I'm booked on flight 123 to New York
on May 2nd, but I'd like to change it to May 3rd.
Agent : O.K. May I have your name, please?
Lee : My name is Chul Soo, Lee, last name is L-E-E.
Agent : Would you like to fly the same time? We have the same flight 123 to New York on
May 3rd, too.
Lee : Yes, please.
Agent : All right. I cancelled your flight on May 2nd, and booked you on the May 3rd flight,
departing and arriving at the same time.
Lee : Thank you.
Tips 3.1
1) change / cancel a reservation
Don't call me names.
We gave him big hands.
We gave him a big applause.
We gave him a standing ovation.
We gave him a hand. 여기서 a hand는
a helping hand의 뜻이다.
They're giving him fives.
Dialogue 3.2
Agent : Sorry, but our flight to New York on May 3rd is sold out. If you must leave on
May 3rd, I can check another airlines for you.
Lee : Yes, please.
Agent : Let's see. Here we go! Northwest and American Airlines have services to New York,
JFK on May 3rd.
Lee : Thank you.
Tips 3.2
1) sold out 비행편이나 공연 등의 좌석이 매진되었을 경우 쓰는 표현이며 It's sold out.이나 We
are sold out. 또는 It's fully booked.
2) check another airlines
3) Here we go!
Dialogue 3.3
Agent : Sorry, but our flight to New York on May 3rd is fully booked. How can I help you,
sir?
Lee : Can I be waitlisted on that flight?
Agent : Sure, you could if you'd like to take the chance. I'll put your name on the waiting
list for flight 123 on May 3rd. Pease check with us whether your flight is confirmed by May
2nd.
Lee : O.K. I'll do that. Thanks.
Tips 3.3
Can I be waitlisted? Can I be on the waiting list for
that flight? 또는 Could you put me on the waiting list?
You have no chance to get a seat.
3) by May 2nd 출발 하루 전인 5월 2일까지는 (by) 확인되어야 하므로.
Waiting list
Dialogue 3.4
Agent : United Airline. How can I help you?
Lee : Hi! I am waitlisted on your flight 123 on May 3rd. Could you please check whether it's
confirmed (or not)?
Agent : Sure, I could. (pause) Sorry, you are still on the waiting list, as we have many
standby passengers.
Lee : Any chances to get a seat?
Agent : Chances are very slim, I'm afraid. It would be better for you to try other airlines.
Lee : I see. Thanks.
Tips 3.4
1) Any chances to get a seat? How do you
see the chances of getting a seat?
2) Chances are very slim.
Chances are 50-50 (fifty-fifty)
3) It would be better for you to try other airlines
Why don't you try other
airlines? You'd better try other airlines.
Dialogue 3.5
Agent : United Airline. How can I help you?
Lee : Hi! I'd like to reconfirm my flight to L.A. tomorrow afternoon.
Agent : May I have your name, please?
Lee : Last name Lee is L-E-E, and first name is C-H-U-L-S-O-O.
Agent : O.K. You are booked on flight UA321, leaving New York, JFK at 4 p.m. and arriving
in L.A. at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Your flight is confirmed. May I have your phone number where
you can be reached, please?
Lee : Sure, I'm staying at the Holiday Inn in Manhattan. Phone number is, (area code) 213-
345-6789, extension717. You can reach me anytime after 10 p.m.
Agent : Thank you.
Tips 3.5
3) You can reach me anything after 10 p.m.

Agent : American Airline reservations. May I help you?
Kim : Yes. I've made a reservation for your flight 123 to New York on May 2nd, but I'd
like to change it to May 3rd. My name is Man-Soo Kim, last name Kim.
Agent : Sorry Mr. Kim, but all of our flights to New York on May 3rd are sold out. But we
do have seats available for the May 4th flights.
Kim : O.K. Could you book me on the May 4th flight and put me on the waiting list for the
May 3rd flight?
Agent : Sure, I could. Now, your flight AA 127 to New York, JFK on May 4th is confirmed

Kim : O.K. I'll do that. Thanks.
Chapter 4. At the Ticket Counter
예약된 ticket을 pick-up
Key Expressions 4
1) Next (in line), please.
2) I have your reservation on my (computer) screen.
3) Would you like to charge it to your credit card?
4) Could I book my seat assignment here?
5) Would you like a window or an aisle seat?
6) (I'd like) An aisle seat, please.
7) Our flights are smoke-free.
8) Could you have the seat next to me vacant?
9) I'll see what I can do. I can't guarantee that, though.
10) I gave you seat 25 B.
11) Make a left (turn).
Ticket counter - 대개는 check-in 하는 곳과 구분하기 위하여 sign board에 'Purchase Tickets'
Dialogue 4.1
Agent : Next (in line), please.
Lee : Hi, I have a reservation on flight UA 123 to New York today. My name is Chul Soo
Lee. Last name L-E-E.
Agent : O.K. Mr. Lee. Let me check. (After working on keyboards) First name C-H-U-L-S-
O-O?
Lee : Yes, that's me.
Agent : I have your reservation on my (computer) screen. Flight 123 to New York, 8 a.m.
this morning. Would you like to charge it to your credit card?
Lee : Yes, please.
Agent : Here you go, please sign here. (After sign the credit card slip) You are all set, now.
Have a nice trip!
Tips 4.1
1) '다음 분' 하고 말할 때 Next (in line), please 또는 Who's next, please?
2) That's me (us). 문법적으로는 That's I.라야 맞지만, 원어
That's it.
3) Here you go.
Here you are.나 Here it is. 또는 Here we go.
Dialogue 4.2
Lee : Could I book my seat assignment here?
Agent : Sure. Would you like a window or an aisle seat?
Lee : Aisle seat, please. Do you have a smoking section?
Agent : No, our flights are all smoke-free, sorry.
Lee : I see. Could you also have the seat next to me vacant?
Agent : I'll see what I can do. I can't guarantee that, though. I gave you seat 25B, and your
gate is 17. All the way down the hall, and make a left (turn), then you'll see the departure
gates. Boarding will begin in 40 minutes.
Lee : Thank you.
Agent : Thank you. Bye and have a pleasant flight!
Tips 4.2
Could you
have my assigned here? 나 Can I select my seat here?
2) Would you like a window or an aisle seat?
Would / Do you have a seat preference?
금연석/흡연석은 a seat in the
smoking / nonsmoking section이다. 이것을 a smoking / nonsmoking seat으로도 한다.
4) I gave you seat 25B. Your seat number is 25B.
5) have the seat vacant / unoccupied 문법으로는 have the seat be vacant라
6) next to ~의 옆에. seat next to me = seat adjacent to me.
His English is next to none in his class.
7) I'll see what I can do. I can't guarantee that, though.
I'll see 자리에 Let's see로 쓸 수도 있으나 아주
8) make a left (turn)

Do you know the way to the station?
방은 Yes, I do.
Do you know how to get there? Would you show / tell
me the way to the station? 또는 Could I ask you to show me the way to the station?

Chapter 5. Flight Check-in
Key Expressions 5
1) Any bags to check?
2) You have to pay extra for the overweight.
3) They'll be happy to help wrap it up for you.
4) You can gage your suitcase there.
5) Do you carry suntan lotions here?
6) Would you put my mileage in?
7) Are you with me?
예를 들면 L. A.는 LAX, New York은 JFK, 또는 NYC(La Guardia),
London은 LHR(Heathrow) 또는 LGA(Gatwick), Seoul 은 SEL, Tokyo는 NRT(Narita)등이다.
Dialogue 5.1
Agent : Next (in line), please.
Lee : Good morning.
Agent : Hi, where are you going today, sir?
Lee : To New York, JFK.
Agent : Any bags to check?
Lee : Yes, I have two.
Agent : Would you prefer a window or an aisle seat?
Lee : Window and smoking (seat), please.
Agent : I can give you seat 25A, and the gate is 17, upstairs.
Lee : Thank you.
Tips 5.1
1) Where are you going today, sir?
2) bags to check (in) 기내로 hand carry할 짐 이외에는 check-in을 하고 수하물표(baggage
How many bags are you checking?
Did
you pack it by yourself?(Yes.) Have you been with it all the time since you've packed
it?(Yes.) Did someone ask you to carry anything?(No.)
4) I have two. 원래의 full sentence는 I have two bags to check.

I'd like to discuss this with you in detail. I want to
marry him.
discuss something with someone
He started (=
departed from) L.A. and reached (= arrived in) Las Vegas in 4 hours. He entered (= went
into) the school. I'd like to have a discussion on this with you in detail.
She's married to him.
짐을 부칠 때 좌석등급에 따라 차이가 있으나 대개는 30 pounds(약자 lbs로 표기. 1lb=0.45Kg)짜
Dialogue 5.2
Agent : Any bags to check (in)?
Lee : (Putting the bag on the conveyor) Yes, I have just one.
Agent : It weighs 40 pounds. You can check only bags 30 pounds or less.
Lee : Excuse me?
Agent : You have to split it into two, or you have to pay extra for the overweight.
Lee : Oh, I didn't know that. Where could I do that?
Agent : Take your bag to our service desk at the left corner on this floor. They'll be happy
to help spilt and wrap it up for you.
Lee : O.K. Thank you very much.
Agent : You're quite welcome.
Tips 5.2
30 pounds or
2) Excuse me? (I) Beg your
pardon?, Say that again, please., I'm sorry? 또는 What was that?
3) pay extra for the overweight 중량 초과에 대해 추가요금을 내다. for being over the limit 으
4) split into two 두 개로 나눈다는 의미.
5) wrap up 포장하다.
Dialogue 5.3
Lee : Can I hand-carry this into the cabin?
Agent : May I ask what it is, please?
Lee : It's golf club. Just one.
Agent : Sorry, sir. It's oversized, you must check that in.
Lee : (Putting it on the conveyor) O.K. How about this suitcase?
Agent : Well, it looks O.K. to me, but you could check with the gage to make sure. Did you
see a display board with a picture on it at the entrance of the terminal? You can gage your
suitcase there.
Tips 5.3
1) hand-carry into the cabin.
carry into cabin으로 써도 좋다.
Do you
carry suntan lotions, here? Do you have suntan lotions available, here?
2) check with the gage. gage 혹은 gauge(영국식 영어)로 쓴다.
Dialogue 5.4
Agent : Where are you going today, sir?
Lee : To New York via Columbus, Ohio.
Agent : O.K. I gave you seat 25A to Columbus, Ohio, and 20F to New York, JFK from
Columbus. Your gate is 15. Gate information to JFK is not available yet, but you can find it
on the computer screens at the Columbus airport terminal.
Lee : Here's my frequent flyer card. Would you put my mileage in?
Agent : Certainly. (Moments later) Here's your mileage card back and your boarding passes.
You're all set. Have nice trip!
Lee : Thanks.
Tips 5.4
1) via ~를 경유해서. New York through Columbus에서처럼 via대신 through를 써도 좋다.
3) put in mileage
Dialogue 5.5
Lee : I'm going to New York via Columbus, Ohio, today.
Agent : O.K. We will send your bags all the way through to New York, but you should get
a new boarding pass, when you arrive in Columbus, Ohio. You can do that at the transfer
desk in the arrival terminal.
Lee : I got you. Thanks.
Tips 5.5
1) I got you.
got it. 내가 하는 말을 알아듣느냐고 물을 때는 Do you get me? 또는
Are you with me?나 Are you following me?
2) all the way through to New York.
New York으로만 써도 의미가 통한다. all the way through는 Ohio에서 짐을 찾는 것 없이 계속

즉, make a reservation, reserve. take a look,
look. have a discussion, discuss. make a copy, copy.

seat?
Lee : I'd like an aisle seat to the rear, please.
Agent : How many bags are you checking?
Lee : (Putting the bag on the conveyor)Just two.
Agent : I have a few questions for you for security reasons. Did you pack them by yourself?
Lee : Yes.
Agent : Have you been with them all the time since you've packed them?
Lee : Yes.
Agent : Did someone ask you to carry anything?
Lee : No.
Agent : All right. Mr. Lee. Here's your boarding pass. I gave you seat 50 B for flight 123 to
JFK, and the gate is 17 on the second floor, one stair up. All the way down the hall and
make a right, then you'll find the stairways to the departure gates. You should get a new
boarding pass when you arrive in Chicago. Boarding will begin in about 40 minutes. And
here's your mileage card back.
Lee : Did you put the mileage in?
Agent : Yes, I did.
Lee : How can I get a new boarding pass for the flight from Chicago to JFK?
Agent : You can get it at the transfer desk at the O'hare airport terminal.
Lee : I see. Thank you.
Agent : Have a nice trip!
Chapter 6. At the Duty-Free Shops
Key Expressions 6
1) I'm just browsing.
2) Take your time.
3) I'm looking for local wines.
4) Where can / could I find them?
5) I'd like something in between.
6) What do you recommend / suggest?
7) It's 50 percent off.
8) It's a real bargain.
9) You can get three for the price of two.
10) If you buy two, you'll get one free.
11) Cash or charge?
12) 24 dollars out of 30.
Dialogue 6.1
Clerk : Hi, may I help you?
Lee : No thank you. I'm just browsing.
Clerk : O.K. Take your time, and if you need my help, just let me know.
Lee : Thanks.
Tips 6.1
1) 그냥 구경만 한다는 표현은 I'm just browsing. 또는 I'm just looking around.
2) Take your time.

No down
payment, no interest and no payment until next year!

Dialogue 6.2
Clerk : He! Can I help you?
Lee : I'm looking for local wines. Where can I find them?
Clerk : Let me show you, it's on aisle 6. Which one would you like, red or white?
Lee : Red one, please.
Clerk : We have California 93's and 95's. Would you like something dry or sweet?
Lee : I'd like something in between, not too dry or (too)sweet.
Clerk : Um. How about this one? This is California 93's, medium dry.
Lee : O.K. Let me have two of them, please.
Clerk : Sure. Take these to the lady at the cashier, please. Thank you very much.
Tips 6.2
Do you have / carry local wines?
French wine,
Italian wine... 등.
3) 93's. Ninty-threes.
4) something in between.
Dialogue 6.3
Clerk : Hi! May I help you?
Lee : Yes, please. I'm looking for something for my wife. What do you recommend/suggest?
Clerk : Let me see. How about this amber bracelet? It's now 50% off. It's real bargain.
Lee : I see. Let me have a closer look, please.
Tips 6.3
1) 권할 만한 것이 있느냐고 물을 때, What do you recommend? 혹은 suggest로 쓴다.
단하게는 Any recommendations?
2) 50%(percent) off. 내가 물건값을 50% 깎아주겠다는 표현은 I'll take 50% off.
It's on sale now.
3) It's a real bargain. 아주 싸게 잘 사는 것이라는 표현. a real bargain 대신 a good bargain
또는 a good deal로 써도 좋다. It's not a big deal.
Dialogue 6.4
Clerk : Hi! How may I help you?
Lee : Where can I find cigarettes?
Clerk : It's on aisle 7.
Lee : I'd like a carton of Marlboro Light, please.
Clerk : It's on sale now. You can get three for the price of two.
Lee : (I'm) Sorry?
Clerk : If you buy two, you'll get one free. I mean, it's 33% off.
Lee : Oh, I see. I'll take them, please.
Clerk : Sure. It's 24 dollars. Cash or charge?
Lee : Cash, please. Here's 30 dollars.
Clerk : 24 dollars out of 30. 6 dollars is your change.
Tips 6.4
1) You can get three for the price of two.
You pay the price of two for three.
2) (I'm) Sorry?
3) buy two, get one free. 2
4) Cash or charge? Would/Will that be
cash or charge?
I'll pay with Master Card.

"Here are your change,
22 dollars. Which makes one hundred."

Tips 7.1
1) Is this taken? Is this occupied? May
I sit here? 또는 Would you mind if I sit here?
Would you mind ~?
course not. 이나 Certainly no. 또는 Not at all. No, I don't로 할 수도 있으나 너무
2) Go ahead. Why don't you go ahead?
Dialogue 7.2
Clerk : Hi, may I help you?
Lee : Hi, I'd like to change dollars into german marks. What's the exchange rate between

gentlemen. Your flight UA123 bound for New York is now ready for boarding. First, we will
do preboarding. Passengers with children or any passengers who may need assistance will
board this time. Please have your boarding pass and passport ready for inspection. We ask
other passengers to wait in the lounge, until we announce the general boarding by row
number. Thank you."
"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. We are now ready for general boarding (for flight 123
bound for New York, JFK). Passengers with seat numbers / rows 30 or over may board at
this time. First and business class passengers may board anytime. (Pause) Now, passengers
with between 15 thru 29 may board this time. (Pause) Now, passengers with rows from 1 to
14 may board this time. Thank you for flying United, and we wish you a pleasant flight.
Thank you."
Dialogue 7.3
Lee : Excuse me. I couldn't hear what you were saying. My seat is 25B, can I board now?
Clerk : No, you have to hold on for a while. Rows 30 or over are boarding now.
Lee : I see. Thank you.
Tips 7.3
여기서는 bound for 대신 departing for 또는 heading
for 로 써도 된다.
2) have your passport ready for inspection.
은 문장은 have your passport made ready for inspection일 것이나, 구어체에서는 made를 생략
I couldn't hear what you were saying.이나 I
couldn't hear you. I didn't get you.

의 하나가 Go get it.
이해는 되지만, 혹자는 이것이 원래 Go to get it.또는 Go and get it.이라는 원문장에서 to나 and
왜냐하면 come동사의 경우는 분명히 Come and get it.으로 쓰지. and를 생략한 Come get it.
고 할 때 Go fetch!
도 Go to / and fetch! 나 Let's go to / and eat.
"May I have your attention, please.
Gate number for the United Airline flight UA123 bound for New York, JFK has been changed
from 15 at 21. Please proceed to gate 21."
"May I have your attention, please. United Airline flight UA123 bound for New York, JFK
will be delayed about 30 minutes, due to bad visibility at the airport. We will keep you
posted for a new boarding time. We are sorry for this inconvenience and thank you for your
cooperation."
Dialogue 7.4
Lee : Are you saying that this flight will be delayed?
Clerk : Yes. But we don't expect that delay will be too long. We'll announce the new
boarding time when we are ready. Sorry for this inconvenience.
Tips 7.4
It's not (due) on time.
3) We don't expect / think that delay will be long.에서 we expect / think that delay won't
be long.
"May
I have your attention, please, ladies and gentleman. We are overbooked for our flight UA123
to New York. We're looking for 3 volunteers to give up their seats. For those who volunteer,
we'll book them on our next flight UA 125 departing two hours later, and give them 200
dollars worth of UA flight coupons which you can use on your next UA flight to make up
for this inconvenience. Any volunteers, please show yourself to the ticketing counter. Thank
you."
Dialogue 7.5
Lee : Excuse me. Could you explain what's going on here?
Passenger : Oh, yes. They're looking for 3 volunteers to give up their seats on this flight.
You can volunteer, if it's O.K. for you to arrive in New York two hours later.
Lee : I don't think I have a problem with that.
Passenger : Then you should volunteer and get the 200 dollar coupon for your future use.
It's not bad at all.
Lee : Is that coupon good only for UA flight?
Passenger : Yes, I think so. That means you'll get 200 dollar discount on your next purchase
of UA tickets. Sometimes they give away cash for compensation, but this time they didn't.
Lee : I see.
Tips 7.5
1) What's going on? What's happening now?
2) give up 양보하다.
3) make up for 보상하다. compensate
4) show oneself 나타나다.
We'll charge 20 percent of the fare as a penalty for no shows.
5) good for~ ~에 유효하다.
6) give away

For further information, please read carefully
safety instruction card in your seat pocket. Thank you."
"For
your own safety, use of electronic devices such as portable radios, CD players, cellular phones
and lap-top computers is not allowed during take-off and landing. Also, please be reminded
that this is a non-smoking flight, and smoking is not permitted during the entire flight, and
smoking is strictly prohibited in the lavatories. Thank you for your cooperation."

Dialogue 8.1
Cabin crew : Would you like something to drink, sir?
Lee : Yes, coffee, please.
Cabin crew : Any cream or sugar?
Lee : No, just black, please.
Cabin crew : Here you are.
Lee : Thank you. (After finishing a first cup)Excuse me. Could I have (some) more coffee,
please?
Cabin crew : Certainly.
Tips 8.1
1) Any cream or sugar? (Would you like) White or black?
2) (some) more coffee 커피를 한 잔 더 달라고 할 때, more coffee 또는 another cup of coffee로
"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Traffic is heavy at the airport now.
There's a long line waiting for take-off. Five planes are ahead of us. It would be about 15
minutes before we take-off. As soon as we get clearance from the control tower, we'll be on

4) Traffic is heavy
5) get clearance from the control tower (to take off) We
are cleared for take off from control tower.

Don't you think so?라는 질문에 대한 대답은, Yes, I do.
No, I don't.
Would you like more coffee?
Lee : No more, thank you.
No more?
Lee : Yes.
more? Yes, I'd like more
coffee.
Yes나 No로 대답하지 않고 물음에 동의하면 That's correct. I don't think
so.
"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is your captain speaking. Welcome
aboard United Airline UA123 bound for New York, JFK. We have departed L.A. airport on
time and we are now cruising at an altitude of 30,000 feet with ground speed of 550 miles an
hour. The weather in New York is forecast to be generally clear with the temperature of 70
degrees(Fahrenheit). Flight time to New York this afternoon will be 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Our expected time of arrival at JFK airport is 7 p.m. local time. Beverage service will begin
soon. Now, sit back and relax, and enjoy your flight ! Thank you."
Dialogue 8.2
Lee : What time is it in New York (local time)?
Passenger : There's a 3 hours time difference between L.A. and New York. Therefore, it's
3:30 p.m. now in New York.
Lee : Does it go ahead or behind?
Passenger : The Eastern Standard Time goes ahead.
Lee : Then, I'm sure I will have jet-lag.
Passenger : Maybe, you'll have a hard time getting up early in the morning.
Tips 8.2
1) ground speed
4) sit back relax.
5) local time 현지 시간.
6) Eastern Standard Time 동부 표준시간. Eastern Standard
Time, Central Time, Mountain Time과 Pacific Standard Time으로 나뉘어져 있다.
San Francisco는 Pacific Standard Time을 사용한다는 표현은 San
Francisco is on Pacific Standard Time.
8) have a hard time ~ ing.
"Ladies and gentlemen. The Captain has just turned the seat belt signs off.
However, for your safety we recommend you keep your seat belt fastened whenever / while
you're seated. Thank you."
Dialogue 8.3
Lee : Excuse me. Can I change my seat? I'd like to sit next to my friend over there.
Cabin crew : Sure, you can.
Tips 8.3
Can I change my seat?
Can I move next to my friend over there, please?
First 및 business class에서는 course별로 serve가 되지만
Dialogue 8.4
Cabin crew : Would you like a hot meal?
Lee : Yes, please.
Cabin crew : We have fish or steak. Which one would you like?
Lee : (I'll have a) Steak, please. Can I have steak sauce, please?
Cabin crew : Sure, I'll get you one right away. (Serving the plate)Enjoy your meal.
Lee : Thank you.
Tips 8.4
1) get you (something). Can I have (something)?을 Can you get
me (something)?
2) right away.
Excuse me. I've ordered
a vegetarian meal when I made a reservation.

The picture does him justice. The picture
doesn't do him justice.

Dialogue 8.5
Cabin crew : (Would you like)Any duty-free items?
Lee : Yes, I'd like a carton of Marlboro Light, please.
Cabin crew : Here you are. Is that all?
Lee : Yes. That's it. Can I charge it to my credit card?
Cabin crew : Sure. We accept Visa, Master Card or American Express.
Lee : Do you also accept Diners Card?
Cabin crew : I'm afraid we don't. Sorry.
Lee : I see, here's my Master Card.
Tips 8.5
담배 한 갑은 a pack of cigarettes.

I want to give you my money
Banker : ?? Oh, really? Thank you very much.
I'd like to open
a checking / saving account, please.

"Ladies and gentlemen. We'll be commencing our in-flight movie. The title of
today's feature film is 'Sleepless in Seattle.' starring Tom Hanks. Please select channel 1 for
English, and channel 2 for Korean. Enjoy the movie, thank you."
Dialogue 8.6
Lee : Excuse me. Can I have an eye shade, please?
Cabin crew : Sure, I'll find one for you. You don't want to see the movie?
Lee : No, I've already seen it before. I'd rather take a nap, I guess.
Cabin crew : You've already seen it? Was it good?
Lee : Yes, it was moving.
Tips 8.6
1) today's feature film, feature
ceremony.
3) take a nap 잠깐 눈을 붙이다. 잠깐 졸다. have a nap으로 써도 된다.
4) it was moving.

Dialogue 8.7
Lee : Excuse me. I feel nauseated. Can you help me?
Cabin crew : Sure. I'll get you a sick-bag and some pills right away. Please hold on a
second. I'll be right back.
Lee : Thanks.
Tips 8.7
1) I feel nauseated. I feel nausea.
I feel throwing up.
의 원래 의미는 eat too much(과식하다)이다.
2) sick-bag
3) hold on a second
on이 쓰였다. Hold on a minute.

Dialogue 8.8
Lee : Excuse me. Could I have a pillow and a blanket, please?
Cabin crew : Certainly.
Cabin crew : (Looking into an overhead bin)Woops! They're all gone. It's on a first-come-
first-served basis. Let me find them somewhere else for you. (Moments later) Here you are.
Lee : Thanks a lot.
Cabin crew : You're quite welcome.
Tips 8.8
1) overhead bin / compartment
2) Woops!
3) They're all gone.
4) First-come-first-served basis

"Good afternoon,
ladies and gentlemen. We are now 150 miles away from JFK airport and we have just
started our descent. Please make sure your seat belt is securely fastened. From now on, we
ask you to stop using electronic devices such as CD players, cellular phones and lap-top
computers until we touch down. And we'll be closing our in-flight entertainment program.
Flight attendants will be by to collect earphones. We'll be landing in about 25 minutes.
Thank you."
"We expect to arrive at JFK international airport 20 minutes earlier / later than scheduled,
as we have a strong tail / head wind."

Dialogue 8.9
Lee : Excuse me. I have a connection flight to catch at 8 p.m. It's Northwest 035 to Boston.
Do you know the gate number for this flight?
Cabin crew : Sure. I can find that for you. (Pause)It's 19.
Lee : Do I have enough time to catch that flight?
Cabin crew : We'll, let's see. We'll be arriving at JFK around 7:30 p.m. at gate 15, and your
connecting flight departs from gate 39. I think you have barely enough time to make it, as
the gates aren't that close.
Lee : What if I can't?
Cabin crew : Our ground staff will help you find other flights.
Tips 8.9
1) be by 옆으로 지나가다.
"Ladies and
gentlemen. Welcome to New York! Please, remain seated until we get to the parking lot and
seat belt sign has been switched off. It's been our pleasure serving you today, and we'll be
looking forward to seeing you again soon. Thank you for flying United Airlines, and we wish
you a pleasant stay here in New York. And passengers those who are continuing, we wish
you a nice trip to your final destination. Thank you, and have a nice day!"
3) It's been our pleasure serving you 여기서는 반드시 serving으로 써야하며 to serve로 못 쓴
다.
4) head / tail wind
6) around 7:30 p.m.
7) You have barely enough time to make it.
You can scarcely / hardly make it.
8) What if~?
쓰이는 표현으로 You need big ifs.
This business could be a success, if you
have a favorable market situation, and if you have no competitors, and if and if... Anyway
you need many big ifs!

Coke

Coke? No, I don't. But I do have a Pepsi.

Cabin crew : May I offer you something to drink?
Lee : Yes, an orange juice, please.
Cabin crew : With ice ?
Lee : No, without ice, please.
Cabin crew : Here you are, sir.
Lee : Thank you.
Cabin crew : Would you also like a hot meal? We have a fish, steak or chicken.
Lee : Excuse me. But, I ordered a vegetarian meal when I made a reservation.
Cabin crew : Oh, did you? Let me check. Your seat number is ... 25A. Yeah, that's right.
Sorry, I'll get your meal right away.
Lee : Thank you.
Moment later
Lee : Excuse me. Could I have a blanket, please?
Cabin crew : Sure. Let's see if I can find it (for you) in the overhead compartment. Woops!
It's all gone. For a short flight like this, we don't stock enough blankets for all passengers.
It's on first-come-first-served basis. Anyway, let me see if I can find one. (Moment later)
Here you are, sir.
Lee : Thank you.
Cabin crew : You're welcome. Before you take a nap, would you like any duty-free items?
We have whiskeys, wines, cigarettes and to forth.
Lee : No, thank you.
