DAEGU
by D.J. Yoon
I
Walking down the street in Gyeongsang-do
Past Andong, past Uiseong, and past Gunwi
Someone dares to guess
Daegu might be just around the corner
So he asks a person who goes ahead of him
How many rhees for daegu?
Then the person asks back
Hey, man
I've eaten a lot of daegu so far, but I’ve never thought about counting its rhees
Do you count each rhee of daegu while eating it?

Do you count each (rh)ee (tooth) of daegu (cod) while eating it?
Appreciation Review
• Homophones:
- daegu in Korean sounds like Daegu(city) or cod.
- rhee in Korean sounds like mile or tooth.
It's hilarious.
What makes audience laugh so much?
Yes, this is due to a homophone.
(In this poem, two homophones daegu and rhee are being used.)
Using a homophone makes the audience’s expectations or predictions so contradictory.
Then readers are forced to inevitably smile at the unexpected expressions or responses.
In reality, when asked the question ‘How many miles for Daegu?’, no one would ever think about the question of how many teeth a cod has.
But, I believe that in literature anything is possible.
In particular, this poem creates such a unique idea or feeling by means of using homophones.
The same goes for the other poems by D.J. Yoon such as ‘bee’ and/or ‘duck.’
If you use the same words with different meanings, the readers will be confused and have no choice but to laugh.
This is one of the pleasures the poetry that uses a homophone provides.
감상평
hilarious adj. very funny
