Timaru is one step closer to hosting a world speed skating championship.
The recently built skating rink clubrooms at Caroline Bay was officially opened on Sunday by sponsors and local dignitaries.
About 200 people donned their skates for the grand opening, attended by sponsors, Timaru District Councillors Sally Parker and Dave Jack, and local MP Jo Goodhew.

South Canterbury Roller Skating Club development co-ordinator Mark Lowen said the $470,000 clubrooms, including a lounge, kitchen, and changing rooms, and replaced the former A-Frame club building.
Together, the entire facility was worth just under a million dollars, which the club and community had for their own use, Lowen said.

The new facility ramped up Timaru's chances of hosting a world speed skating championship, once it had "ticked all the boxes".
"The local South Canterbury Roller Skating Club would like to be able to hold a world tournament here."
The new building was finished in August after work started just before Christmas last year.
After speeches and afternoon tea, the rink was opened up for a free session for the public.
"It was really good," Lowen said.
Funding for the new facility had been given by various trusts, including Trust Aoraki, and Mid and South Canterbury Community Trust, as well as corporate sponsors.
Until recently, the outdoor roller skating rink was the only one in the country.
However, the facility at Caroline Bay remained the best in the southern hemisphere, he said.
The sport had a resurgence in the past decade.
"Nine years ago, we had two competitive skaters. Today, we have about 50."
The club's profile had also been grown since the rink was rebuilt.
The sport itself was good grounding for athleticism and popular with young people, he said.
Training for the club is held throughout the week with public sessions held on Sunday 2 to 4pm.
