Captivation that attracts Your Eyes
Each of artist Jiyoung’s work of art gives you visual delight, making you stop and appreciate the work. Her works possess the captivation that attract your eyes, as does someone that would make you gaze back at him(or her) after passing each other. The works display various objects that show their presence by a variety of colors. Before your brains ask what each work signifies, your eyes are already on the pictures and are enchanted by the delight they give you.
'Beauty' is the 'value and captivation of the object', and the term 'aesthetic', originated from a Greek word 'aesthesis', meaning 'perceiving or looking at the attractive object'. While not all works of art are beautiful in real life, Jiyoung’s works possess the influence that enables you to 'focus' on the 'beauty' of the works themselves.
'Esthetic attention' is, in other words, 'object-centered attention'. In Jiyoung’s works, she chose aluminium as the object, which shines when it is illuminated, and the complementary colors making each object look better, enabling this 'esthetic attention'. This is because each work reflects her belief that works must first be beautiful. In other words, she chooses objects and colors in accordance with the principle that any object must be unique, valuable and must stand out.
The Viewpoint that recognizes the 'Splendorous Self''
Jiyoung metaphorically expresses the mental states of people with defects and emotional wounds by presenting various dolls in her works. The dolls, with the same facial e-pressions all the time, emphasize the people leading everyday life with e-pressionless faces and hiding deep pains. Yet, rather than bringing burdens and disgrace by explicitly bringing out the wounds, Jiyoung carefully metaphorically expresses them through the dolls’ looks, postures and motions. Her eyes, which understand the profound facial e-pressions, comfort those who have been reluctant to show their wounds and defects in fear of harsh criticism from the public.
The one-legged doll(Lover) which cannot stretch its arms to its lover but only stares into empty space with a hollow smile seems to be showing its passion that has stopped in front of love by the fear of its defect. The gorgeous clown-dressed doll(Pink Pierrot) staring into empty space with a sad eyes seems to be groaning under the hard life behind its cheerful face, through only its eyes.
Also, the figures of splendid flowers filling the empty space and plant figures creating the illusion that you are in a forest garden imply Jiyoung’s wish to embrace the true hearts of miserable people. The picture frames, which represent the significance of the artwork by surrounding it to provide security, deliver the message that “Everyone and everything is special, precious and distinguished.”, by describing the dolls as noticeable objects which could have remained insignificant and abandoned.
Through those works, you can see that the viewpoint that recognizes each object’s 'splendorous self' by its inherent special characteristics and significance does not focus solely on apparent splendor. The viewpoint which understands how it would feel when we become less and less confident as you become aware of your weaknesses enables us to experience 'consoling moments' in our life.
The objet of vivid imagination and motherhood
Jiyoung’s works(Sweet dreams, consoling moments) use numerous kinds of dolls and paper doll dresses that remind you of your childhood memories, as well as teacups, dishes, flowers and mirrors for decoration. These objets, which appear in many of Jiyoung’s works, pile the image of a girl dreaming of becoming a woman and stretching her imagination with that of a mother recollecting the dream.
The image of the girl dressing a paper doll with a splendid dress and stretching her imagination with a yearning to become a woman, and the image of a mother expressing her earnest desire for beauty by gazing on pretty teacups, dishes, flowers and mirrors, may be reflecting Jiyoung’s impression of a mother and a girl.
Let the 'dreams of a girl', and the 'boundless imagination', which can make stories by reflecting their ideas in each object, be Jiyoung’s former characteristics. Then the 'careful e-pression of motherhood', which is the effort to look at the beautiful dreams kept preciously as you have realized over the years how difficult it is to fulfill, is her latter characteristics.
The objets, which reflect the two characteristics above, enable you to discover the motherhood to embrace and protect the beautiful and precious things which is latent in all women. At the same time, the objets enable mothers to encounter a girl’s mind hidden deep in their hearts. This is a similar idea to a big curly-haired girl doll which is hugging a small girl doll tight but would actually like to dream and express what it wants.
Splendorous comfort
If you study the gap between the first passion for dreaming and expressing freely and the state of mind after deciding to look carefully at the dreams with calm passion, you will inevitably encounter the wounds and defects deep inside your heart. Thus, while people are first enchanted by the strong yet harmonious colors of Ji’s works, the nostalgia and sadness suddenly sink deeply in their hearts.
The shapes of the objects Jiyoung has clearly displayed using complementary colors evoke the first fresh passion you had before you went through all the wounds. This passion may include resolutions to dream without fear and to love with courage, the healthy self making a fresh start, hopes to build the future which do not crumble but get stronger and stronger as the time passes by, and the passion for fully attaining all the goals in your life.
Like this, artist Jiyoung’s works enable us to bring out and encounter the 'splendorous self' from our memory storehouses. Once we regain the gem which we thought that we had lost, the beauty of Ji’s attractive works will become a 'Splendorous comfort' that she is giving us.
