Gilbert Lascault
Pierre Cabanne
The paintings of Bang Hai Ja keep offering us new views of the universe. They are not the kind of paintings concerned only with the problems of the art of painting contemplating itself. They are not psychological paintings, prepossessed with introspection, with self-analysis - paintings in which (as they say) the artist's ego expresses itself. Neither formalistic nor expressionist nor introspective, Bang Hai Ja's paintings are first of all a look at the cosmos†: a look that admires the universe and helps us to admire its manifold beauty. In the eyes of Bang Hai Ja, light has various forms. Light is heterogeneous, defined by the source, in all its variety.
According to Bang Hai Ja, artists encounter this plurality of light, which seems to condition the possibility of apprehending the world : "All these forms of light slowly open up outward and inward, spreading and, through our eyes, making us meet the universe." At times light (as painted by Bang Hai Ja) comes from behind, springing from the source of substance, emanating from it. The artist feels that all matter carries within it the light that is its life†: life and matter. Her paintings shun dead matter, dull, extinct substance. They seek to stage live matter, sparkling, bright, ablaze. For each material (the artist thinks), light is the means to expand.
Sometimes, with Bang Hai Ja, light paradoxically radiates from objects thus emitting an eerie halo. Sometimes, no less paradoxically, light rises from earthly to celestial spheres, high-soaring.
Gilbert Lascault
When Bang Hai Ja is not there, others come and stroll through the land of her paintings, discover that they like it there, and carry away in their eyes and in their minds her light and the impalpable gleam of pulsing colours, these constellations, these vibrant germinations that are touched by the magic of immateriality ....
Bang Hai Ja does not paint nature but space, signs, marks, streaks, cries, which become by a sort of visionary magic splashes of light, star tremors, seismograms of calls, of distant sounds. The suggestions and vibrations of an imagined cosmos. Emotion crystallizes in them, opens a pathway to infinity.
Bang Hai Ja’s painting is a shimmering garden … When Bang Hai Ja took her distance from reality, from its conventions and arbitrariness, she was astonished to find that she had the power to lift the veil on the unknown, the ineffable, the inaccessible, to peer into it. Her path lay in the unwonted prehension of the cosmos, seen as mystery, surprise, ecstasy, joy, fervour.
The art of Bang Hai Ja is neither an adventure nor a feat, but a quest. Her painting, which vibrates with an intense poetry, is a living, independent organism which produces radiant light effects ...
