Hellooooo, Kevin!
It’s Ryna with many many hobbies and there’s a new thing I like about the internet.
That sounds like an ad but I promise it’s not. There’s a new saying on Thai twt and it’s “at what time?”
It’s the way people use it. They’ll say things like “at what time are you gonna stop being an ass and realize that your actions hurt people?” or “at what time is the government gonna stop dictating what women should do with their bodies?” or “at what time are these people gonna respect other people’s privacy?” or “at what time is the patriarchy gonna be gone already?”
I don’t know. I just love the implied urgency of it. Because, like, though it’s similar to saying things and ending with WHEN in English, the answer to “when” could be anything but “at what time” especially in our language, it’s implied that it means “at what time TODAY”. (The translation might be closer to “at which hour” I think.)
I love that people are using it with issues that are age-old and sometimes systematic, like they cannot take this anymore and need these issues resolved within today. They even use it to qrt politicians asking them when they’re gonna be better people and register actual useful laws. It’s so fun! I love it! Innovative! Revolutionary! Genius!
I really don’t have anything to update other than that. I did complete my goal of reading 12 books this year. I’m on my 13th and 14th books simultaneously. For some reason, I’ve been reading a lot of memoirs this year. I guess we all turn into our parents in the end. My mom said her favorite genre of books is biography which I’ve always thought was such a boring answer lol. But then again, she has a degree in library studies while I have a degree in English literature, so we might have already been similar from the beginning. Not to say my favorite genre of books is biography, though.
But, yeah, I just read In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. It’s a memoir talking mostly about the abusive relationship she had with her ex-girlfriend. It’s read a little differently than a memoir. It feels more experimental than your usual memoir. For one, the book is in 2nd person pov, so it was not her in that dream house; it’s you. I think this was supposed to make it a little more immersive?
It’s okay, I guess. I don’t hate it. There are quotes I like and agree with like, “...abusers do not need to be, and rarely are, cackling maniacs. They just need to want something and not care how they get it.”
The book I’m reading now is also a memoir. It’s Know My Name by Chanel Miller. You might now be familiar with her name now, but if I say another name, you might. Years ago, Chanel Miller was s*xually assaulted by that Brock Dickhead Whatshisname. You might have seen it on the news.
I’ve only read 10% of the book but it’s so engaging already. It’s so well written, so so well written. I will definitely be talking about this book once I finish it.
Oh, I joked with someone (you know on here) about how I had to write journal entries to submit to my professor when I was in uni and now I’m practically doing that again but submitting them to a kpop idol instead.
Well, you said “we learn from each other” so are you open to reading my Literary Criticism essays?
I’m just kidding though. Those things need to be buried deep deep deep in the 6th circle of hell where they belong.
Hope you’ll have fun in Poland and I hope the journey there is safe and enjoyable!
Love you (strictly platonically),
Ryna x
P.S. Oh gosh, I found an email my instructor sent me after I handed in a terrible essay about Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? twice. She was so done with me.
19 y/o Ryna did not enjoy that book. Yes, it’s the book that got adapted into Blade Runner. You might like it tho idk. A lot of people love it so I’m not sure why I didn’t. I might pick it up again to see if I actually hate it. Oh gosh, I read the essays. They are painful to read. The first one was a straight-up review talking about how the details in the book made no sense and the second one I just put a bunch of quotes from the book in to reach the word count. It’s ok tho. The next essay I wrote was about a poem I actually like (Alone With Everybody by Charles Bukowski) and my instructor said it was so much better than whatever it was that I turned in previously.
