The owner of a dry-cleaning shop in Papua New Guinea has a unique way of encouraging thieves to drop their behavior. It is giving them a steam cleaning. Police in the northeast town of Lae said a 20-year-old man suffered burns to his abdomen, chest and back after the shop owner turned a steam cleaner on him after he was caught stealing pants worth $5.50. "The owner has done this to many people already," police spokesman Nema Mondiai said on Wednesday. Police seemed not too worried about the radical punishment and released the thief after making sure he had learned a lesson out of his experience. The population of Papua New Guinea, a country surrounded by mountains, is approximately 6 million and the country has had a high crime rate lately. More than 85 percent of its population live on subsistence farming. A new report released by Australian academics on Wednesday said break-ins, burglary and robbery, as well as shoplifting, were the most frequent crimes faced by local businesses.
