woke up this morning
tried to send a picture of smthn to my friend
INSTANTLY got jumpscared by a picture of a corneal ulcer
so that was fun at. 7 in the morning.
ANYWAYS it’s a snow day today! it is comin DOWN out there and it’s not gonna stop for another 5 or so hours, therefore i’m stuck inside because SOMEBODY never put SNOW TIRES ON THEIR CAR (it’s me, i’m somebody, i’ll get there i promise).
so what else am i to do BUT read about refractive surgeries OH SHIT YO WAIT THIS IS PERTINENT TO YOU ACTUALLY. MR. LASIK.
“LASIK”actually stands for “laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis”!
there’s actually a few different refractive surgeries - i was only familiar with LASIK and PRK but i guess there’s more!
speaking of LASIK. if you have never seen this video.

i’m Begging you.
it’s So funny.
ok it’s the next day now (emma?? taking a break?? SHOCKING) so here we go
i got a lap desk in the mail today! so i can study in the warmth of my bed! i’ve heard you’re not supposed to do that, but sometimes i just wanna be cozy alright sue me
man, they have implantable contact lenses (apparently not FDA approved) that can correct up to -20.00D. jesus i can’t imagine having a prescription that’s -20.00 that’s like. INSANE levels of myopia omg
if you get a refractive surgery, you usually can’t be an eye donor. so if you were hoping to donate your eyes anytime soon i’ve got some tough news for ya
this next section is just called “THE EXAM.”. that sounds so ominous LOL
ok this is literally what i do every single day.. i feel silly taking notes on this but i’m a good egg. maybe i’ll learn something about the instruments i use every day
ok i immediately learned something, i apparently do acuities backwards WHOOPSIES it doesn’t really matter honestly. apparently it’s right, left, both. i do both, left, right OOPSIE DOODLE idk who cares. i do it in the opposite way that it’s presented to me in the chart, idk that’s how i was taught so that’s how i do it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
auto refractors are actually really fuckin cool - an auto refractor is that little machine u stick ur face into and u look at the picture come in and out of focus
it’s this thing (this is the one i use at work hehe).
it measures how light changes as it enters the eye, and gives an APPROXIMATION of refractive error. APPROXIMATION is the key word, it’s not the be-all-end-all; but it’s a really good base line for the doctor
me rolling my eyes as i write the definition of phoroptor for the 19,000th time. “rotary-mounted trial lens set used for subjective refraction” i GET IT
i can’t find a picture of the exact one we use but this is close enough — WAIT I THINK I MIGHT HAVE ONE
well there you have it folks
what the fuck is risley prism?? the rizz-ley prism …. don’t laugh at that.
i’ll have to ask doc. poor guy, he’s gonna come back to work tomorrow like “wow i had such a great weekend” and i’m gonna be like “hey do u got a sec? i have 10,000 questions for you”
apparently a slit lamp is Very fucking complicatedWAIT HOLD UP-
TEACHING OBSERVATION TUBE???? WHAT THE FUCK, PUT ME IN COACH I’M READY I WANNA LOOK IN THERE. LEMME SEE!!!! THAT’S COOL AS HELL WTF I DIDN’T KNOW IT HAD THAT!! does OURS have that???? i wanna see!!!! lemme look at someones eye with a microscope i wanna see all the gross little details lemme at ‘em!!
also ❤️❤️goldmann tonometry❤️❤️. ugh doc STILL won’t do it on me i’m so mad.
(quick refresher: goldmann/applanation tonometry is where you numb the surface of the eye and flatten the cornea with an instrument attached to the slit lamp- it’s to get intraocular pressures and i wanna do it SO bad it looks so interesting).
ok it’s explaining the different kinds of astigmatism again (wrt corneal topography) i already know this NEXT.
visual field test!! i do this too!!
this is ours (great picture emma), it’s an oculus! you do one eye at a time
(for example: right eye is always first, you look in with your right eye, cover your opposing eye, and press the button whenever you see a little white dot pop up. there’s 4 red dots in the center that you keep your gaze fixated on- and then on my end, it shows me your visual field, and if there are any scotomas present [scotoma=blind spot]).
there’s other ways to do visual fields- like confrontationals!
i don’t know how to describe a confrontational field test so HERE WHATEVER OK MOVING ON IDC
FUNDUS PHOTOGRAPHY AHHHHH THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING TO DO
my baby ❤️
you take a picture of the back layer (the fundus) of the eye! ITS SO COOL!!
“fundus cameras are used by optometrist, ophthalmologists, and trained medical professionals” does that make me a trained medical professional omg i feel so ~fancy~ right now!
ok i’m making some food and goin to sleep, it’s 8pm and i haven’t eaten yet yikes. shorter one today so you’re welcome for that.
bye!
