Hey there Kevin,
What's it like in Seoul City? I'm a thousand miles away but boy tonight you look so pretty, yes you do. Times Square can't shine as bright as you, I swear, it's true.
I'm sorry, I couldn't lose the opportunity to write this when I JUST SAW PLAIN WHITE T'S PLAY HEY THERE DELILAH LIVE RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY EYES.
I just lived really magical moments last weekend. There's a lot of things I want to tell you about, so I'll start from the beginning, okay? Bear with me please.
First, I mentioned it before, but I grew up as an emo kid. Since I can remember, I listen to emo bands. In my entire teen days, I was fan of bands from this scene. Honestly, it always felt like those bands and artists understood me. I think that's one of the most truthful things about emo kids, we relate so much with the songs that those bands sing about, we can relate to those words. When you're an outcast, when it seems like everything and everyone around you don't understand you, you get attached to the words of those melancholic songs. I mean, the band Simple Plan wrote the emo anthem when they said: "Do you ever feel like breaking down? Do you ever feel out of place? Like somehow you just don't belong and no one understands you. Do you ever wanna run away? Do you lock yourself in your room with the radio on turned up so loud that no one hears you screaming?"
Of course it's cruel when I think that 11 years old Gigi understood too well those lyrics. I always knew I didn't belong where I came from. A small conservative hometown, where people think too badly about the ones who are slightly different. And that's how the emo music made me feel understood.
I don't know how much you know about emo, but it can be categorized as a subculture involving fashion, music, lifestyle, etc. When we talk about emo music, there's actually a lot of different music genres that can be emo. Like punk, pop punk, post-hardcore, alternative rock, screamo... My favorite is pop punk, most of my favorite bands are pop punk bands. For like two decades, there was this huge festival in USA and Canada called Warped Tour that always had so many amazing emo bands. Growing up it was always my dream to attempt this festival. But I was too young, I didn't have money and now the festival no longer exists. So imagine my happiness when an emo festival in Brazil was announced. When my friend sent me the info, I couldn't believe it. Because there was not like 3 bands, THERE WERE 12 AMAZING ARTISTS, some of them I was pretty sure I would never be able to go to their concerts, but now I can say that I DID IT!!!!!!
So I stayed months waiting for march 2024. The plan was to travel to another state to go to the festival with one of my closest friends and a friend of hers. My introvert self was so afraid her friend wouldn't like me, but in the first couple hours we were together she was already TALKING ABOUT YOU BECAUSE OF ME LOL okay, let me explain it. She's a kpop fan, but she didn't know The Boyz. Since I always carry with me at least one photocard of yours and Kebinnie the doll, she saw it and I explained to her that you're my ultimate bias and everything. I explained the whole Gigi moonlight lore.
The traveling journey started on saturday morning and the festival was going to happen on sunday. We got on the bus to travel and it was so funny that you could see that EVERYONE on that bus was going to the concert as well. It was just a regular interstate bus but it looked like everyone there was a group that planned on traveling together. The best part was that there was no traffic, we arrived on time and went to the hotel and then to get some lunch.
The restaurant we went to was really nice. They had a lot of photographies around the place. Their menu was beautiful, with a lot of images. And my kpop stan self took photos of the doll when we were waiting for the food, so the girls also started taking pictures of the doll.
Later we were at the hotel getting ready to go out again and we decided to play some mvs on the tv. My friend's friend was shocked when I told her The Boyz has 11 members. I also got to tell her about how you guys have a lot of different concepts and we ended up with a inside joke (that's when you realize you made a new friend, when you have inside jokes)
So I'll share with you about the inside joke between me and the girls on this trip. A decade ago, a famous brazilian singer tweeted something like, "there's no other band that united everyone like Nirvana did". What he meant was that the band Nirvana was so good that they were able to make people from different styles to like them. But he made a typo, and instead of writing "Nirvana" he wrote "Norvana", so what was supposed to be just a simple tweet became a meme. It was before verified accounts could edit posts and he never deleted it. That tweet is basically a historical heritage tbh. So, when something is legendary, or really good, people usually use that tweet but replace the name Nirvana to something else. So to explain The Boyz to my friend's friend, I changed it to The Boyz, so it became our inside joke during this trip. And you know what's funnier? One of the bands in the festival did a cover of a Nirvana song and in that moment I looked at the girls and said that it felt like they were covering a TBZ song. And let's be honest, The Boyz is really the group capable of uniting a lot of different people that come from different music backgrounds. So if that tweet was made about The Boyz, the typo would be "boyS" lol I just realized it.
We went to a korean restaurant but it was so full, there was a line to get in, we ended up ordering to go and eat at our hotel room watching mvs (the best decision tbh). Here's a picture of our food, an overpriced soju and bad plastic cups because they were the only ones the hotel could give us lol
What made me comfortable traveling with them was that they planned everything ahead. Like, they knew the first bands on the festival are my favorite so we needed to get there early and they agreed on getting up early on sunday morning. Another funny thing, we went to get breakfast at the hotel restaurant and you could see the people that were also going to the festival. I was really happy that we got to go early, we got really good sits and we were in time to watch my favorite brazilian band.
This letter is already really long, so I'll talk about the festival in my next one, okay? To be continued…
Before I go, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT HURT ME LESS OMG???? IS THIS A POP PUNK SONG???? IT IS OKAY I'LL ALWAYS THINK THAT IT IS INDEED. And the photo concepts????? THE EMO VIBES OMG YOU'RE ON YOUR EMO ERA or like my friend said, "Kevin (E)MOon". I'm obsessed with those pictures, and the film, and everything. The memorial concept looks like you guys are ready to sing Helena by My Chemical Romance. I really really really can't wait to see everything I'M SO HAPPY I'M SO EXCITED LET'S GO LET'S GO LET'S GO.
See you soon with more stories. Hope you're having really good days. Take good care. Don't ever forget how proud I'm of you!
Te amo to the moon and back.
Sincerely,
Gigi.
