HIT-MAKER to the stars Darren Dowlut has lost his battle with cancer.
Dowlut, 27, was an award-winning producer and singer-songwriter who worked with American Mariah Carey.
He died at the Monash Medical Centre on Saturday, six weeks after doctors found a tumour in his chest.
Dowlut, of St Kilda, fell ill while preparing to move to Los Angeles to capitalise on his career breakthrough.
His brother Dennis flew to LA earlier to set up shop, but aborted their US mission after doctors found the tumour.
Tributes flowed yesterday. Carey sent condolences when told of the grim diagnosis a few weeks ago.
Darren and Dennis Dowlut were first known as a performance duo Kaylan.
Then they became a studio project called Disco Montego, and the hits flowed. Artists including Katie Underwood, Danielle and Autumn Breeze fronted Dowlut's songs all the way to No. 1. Underwood turned Beautiful and Magic into top 5 hits.
Soon after, Mariah Carey ordered a Dowlut remix of her hit Boy I Need You.
