Overseas voteer turnout for the general election marked an all time-high of 62.8 percent, amid growing attention from overseas voters as the first election to be held since the Yoon administration.
92,923 of the 147,989 possible voters had cast their votes for the election, according to the National Election Commission. The voting took place at 220 voting stations in 115 countries from March 27 to April 1.
The overseas voter turnout surpassed 60 percent for the first time since the overseas votes were introduced for 2012 general election. The voter turnout for 19th and 20th legislative elections recorded 45.7 percent and 41.4 percent respectively, while the 21th election saw a rapid decrease of 23. 8% as over one third of polling stations closed down due to COVID-19.
The offical of the National Election Committee pointed to high interest from voters for the record turnout.
"The vote turnout has drastically increased compared to 56,456 in 19th election and 3,797 in 20th election. It seems many are particulary interested in thiis year's election."
Statistically, the higher voter turnout is favorable to the main opposition party, Democratic Party (DP).
At the last presidental election in 2022, DP presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung won over Yoon Suk-yeol, presidential candidiate at the time, by almost 35,000 votes, 23 percent ahead.
"For overseas vote, only those who are interested in politics cast their ballots, There will be a judgment upon the recent controversty over the Ambassador to Australia Lee Jong-sup," said politics critics Park Sang-byung
But some experts are skeptical about how much impact overseas voter turnout will have on the general election.
"90,000 votes will have mere impact on the overall outcome of the election," Myongju University professor Shin Yool remarked.
Um Kyoung-yeong researcher expressed skepticism on whether record number of overseas turnout will align with the number of overall vote turnout.
"People in their 20s and 30s are still remain pretty quiet although their interest in this election has heightened," said Um Kyoung-yeong researcher.
Meanwhile, workers or students abroad who possesses a registration number or address in Korea are eligible to vote for their local lawmaker and party for proportional representation, while individuals with overseas resident cards or no registration numer are limited to casting their vote solely for proportional representation.

-People in their 20s and 30s are still remain pretty quiet 이 부분도 are still remaining 으로 바꾼다면 더 자연스러울 것 같아요. 고생 많으셨습니다;)
-the higher voter turnout is favorable to the main opposition party --> the 비교, the 비교 형식으로 쓰면 더 자연스러울 것 같아서
"the higher the voter turnout, the more favorable it is to the main opposition party" 이런 식으로 바꿔도 좋을 것 같아요.
-사소한 문법으로는 마지막 문단 "Meanwhile, workers or students abroad who possesses"에서 주어가 복수니 possess로 바꾸면 좋을 것 같습니다.
정말 고생 많으셨습니다!
