Telstra cuts thousands of jobs for workers | 9 News Australia
Telstra workers have been handed a big blow tonight with the telecommunications giant announcing it’s cutting almost 3,000 jobs. The company’s boss insisting the move was difficult but necessary and customers wouldn’t be impacted but unions disagree.
Telstra boss, Vicki Brady, making the call, nearly one in ten Telstra workers are being sacked. It is a very hard day for our people. I appreciate it comes at a time when people are doing it tough. 2,800 jobs, mainly from the company’s enterprise unit that looks after big business and government departments. It’s clear that telco wants to concentrate on its booming mobile and data business.
As for customer service, the Telstra CEO is pledging it won’t get any worse with the job losses. There is absolutely no way you can maintain the service that people expect from Telstra while removing 10 per cent of your workforce. We need to make sure that the services don’t suffer as a consequence of these changes.
Telstra, it seems like ordinary Australians, is feeling the pinch. We have new and different competitors, we have rapid advances in technologies happening, our customer needs continue to evolve and we have ongoing inflationary and cost pressures. 377 workers today got the bad news. Telstra says its severance package will be generous.
My heart goes out to anyone who loses their job. This is a restructuring by Telstra that will have a significant impact on those affected. As a peace offering of sorts to customers, Telstra says it won’t increase the price of its regular mobile phone plans in July which it normally does. That generosity won’t affect its bottom line. Next year’s earnings expected to be more than $ 8 billion. Mark Burrows, Nine News.
