Washington area shows high figures for bank fees
Staff Reporter
Just as consumers and Congress have voiced their concerns about rising bank fees, a report indicates that fee income among the nation's largest banks has outpaced fee income at smaller, community institutions.
In the Washington area, both large, multi-state banks and community banks show a steady rise in fee income in a Sept. 26 report released by Florida-based Bauer Financial Reports Inc.
Industry players and observers attribute the in-tandem increases to the highly concentrated and rapidly consolidating market, which has left locally based banks no choice but to raise fees to compete with their bigger, multi-state bank brethren.
Nationwide, consumers are paying an average of $218.27 in 1997 to maintain a regular checking account at a big bank, 15 percent higher than the $190.33 at a small bank, according to a report released in July by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.
Local results show that consumers pay $225.24 to maintain a regular checking account in the District, $226.52 in Maryland and $230.61 in Virginia, all above PIRG's national average.

Questions 381-382 refer to the following article.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oakland has long suffered in comparison with its neighbor San Francisco which lies a few miles across the Bay. Gertrude once said of Oakland
“there's no there there,” and it is true that Oakland is not exactly first on most
people's list of places to visit. The economy of the city is quite different from San Francisco's as Oakland relies on industry and shipping as opposed to the white-collar services and tourism that are the mainstays of the San Francisco economy. As such, the port of Oakland is one of the busiest in the country and is second in cargo traffic on the West Coast to L.A/Long Beach. Oakland and neighboring Berkeley also act as
the center for the fast growing East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Oakland has for years been plagued with high crime and poverty rates. Recently, however, the economy has improved and Oakland is undergoing something of a rebirth. This has been stimulated by a number of young professionals who are unable to afford the rents of San Francisco and so have taken up residence in Oakland. While it may never equal its famous neighbor in prestige, the city of Oakland has a growing economy, diverse population and a pleasant climate that make it an agreeable place to live.

Travelers to Europe, beware! While Western Europe has much lower violent crime rates than the US, the incidence of petty street crime such as pick pocketing, purse snatching and theft is quite high. Visitors to European cities such as Paris, Milan and Rome must be vigilant that they don't fall victim to street criminals who prey primarily on tourists. Authorities suggest that money and essentials such as passports and visas not be kept in bags wallets or purses. Instead, travelers should keep valuables in a money belt worn underneath clothing or in a pouch worn around the neck. It is important to keep an eye on bags at all times and to be particularly careful in crowds on elevators, escalators and subway platforms. One way that travelers can prevent theft and make their trip less stressful is to pack light and leave expensive cameras and jewelry at home; this will make the traveler less of a target as well as giving them less to worry about.

Questions 608-611 refer to the following report.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
China Pacific Announces Its Results for the Second Quarter of 1998
For the second quarter ended June 30, 1998, net sales were $25.3 million , compared with $24 million during the first quarter. The primary reason for the increase in net sales was an increase in the demand for iron and steel products to approximately 92,000 tons in the second quarter of 1998 from approximately 90,000 tons in the first quarter.
In addition, the average unit price of steel products increased slightly to $275 per ton in the second quarter from $267 per ton in the prior quarter of this year.
Gross profit for the second quarter of 1998 was $0.98 million versus a gross loss of $0.13 million for the first quarter of 1998, and represents a 77 percent decrease from gross profit for the second quarter of 1997.
Net losses for the second quarter of 1998 were $2.9 million, or 32 cents per share, versus net losses of $4.5 million, or 50 cents per share, for the first quarter of 1998. The net losses were caused by a substantial general decline in the Hong Kong real estate market after the outbreak of the Asian turmoil and by an increase in corporate activities relating to the operation of Chengdu Steel resulting in increased legal and accounting expenses.

Questions 694-697 refer to the following brochure.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
HAWAII - It's breathtakingly beautiful, but anything but hot: The Asian economic crisis has hit this paradise hard and that spells opportunity for meeting-planners. Typically one-third of Hawaii's visitors are Japanese , but traffic from Japan is off sharply, leaving usually pricy hotels slashing rates, adding meals and upgrades. The Hilton, with 2,545 rooms on Waikiki, is offering rooms as low as $145 for groups. “For doctors to be at a beach-front hotel for $145, whoa, that's good,” said Serena Leiser, of the American Association of Orthodontists. It is sending 16,000 doctors to the islands in 2003. Hawaii. The only true “tropical paradise” we Americans have. Despite all the incursions of modern civilization--the high rises, the occasional throngs--it remains enchanting, innocent, dreamy. And that's why, in good times and bad, millions of Americans board airplanes to spend their vacations in the place they equate to a Garden of Eden.
Chances are you'll fall in love with Hawaii, because it looks and feels like paradise, or because of the gentle pace of life, perhaps because of the people and their relaxed manner. So if your group or organization is looking for a great place to hold a convention, then look no further.
Hawaii is a paradise for conventioneers!

However, 23 cities reported gains of 10% or better. They were led by Charleston, S.C., up 19.7% to $121,100; San Francisco, up 16.6% to $329,400; and Bradenton, Fla., also up 16.6%, to $104,900. Other big advances came in Green Bay, Wis.; New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; and SanDiego.
By region, gains were strongest in the Midwest, up 7.9% to $114,000 , followed by the West, up 7.5% to $172,900, and the South, up 7.1% to $115,900. The increase in the Northeast was 3.5%, to $151,100.
