Nongshim geared up to clear up irradiation allegations | ||||
Nongshim, Korea`s leading instant-noodle maker, is busy running tests on a range of products to prove to the U.K. Food Standards Agency that they are irradiation-free and do not violate labeling regulations.
The British food agency on June 15 halted imports of 20 Nongshim products, including instant-noodles, or ramyun, like Neoguri, and snacks like its classic Shrimp Cracker. British stores were also required to take them off their shelves. Nongshim assures that it does not use ionizing radiation, or irradiation, to prevent its products from deteriorating. Ionizing radiation involves radiation of food products for preservation. Shorter wavelengths damage microorganisms that contaminate or spoil food. Still, the British food safety agency claims that its own tests show traces of irradiation and that, therefore, the food company violated the FSA`s labeling regulation. It also claims that Nongshim used unapproved irridiation plants. Nongshim refutes the irradiation allegations, saying it only uses steam sterilization. The food maker says it received the import ban notice from a British importing company. Nongshim spokesman Choi Ho-min told The Korea Herald that the company is now examining the blacklisted products to confirm to the FSA that it does not use irradiation. "We don`t use the procedure at all, so obviously it isn`t necessary to label our products accordingly," said Choi. "Once our own tests of the instant noodles and snacks are completed, we`re going to send the results to the FSA and we hope to be cleared of such allegations." Fortunately, for the 40-year-old company, it is not about food safety. "We haven`t felt a negative impact on consumers at home because it`s a labeling issue and not a product safety issue," stressed Choi. The ramyun king on Monday placed a front-page ad in Korean dailies to state its case. Company president and CEO Lee Sang-yoon said that the exported products comply with the food safety regulations of 74 countries and that its products on U.K shelves were not irradiated. Of Nongshim`s total exports worth about $120 million a year, the U.K. market accounts for less than 1 percent. The Korea Food and Drug Administration says it will conduct its own tests of the targeted items. A KFDA official, asking not to be named, noted that the administration will have to conduct its own test of the ingredients under question. He said that the KFDA, with the help of relevant experts, including those from consumer and food industry groups, would have to revise the current irradiation labeling standards. Current standards match those of the United States, according to the KFDA. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been evaluating food irradiation during the last 50 years and considers it safe, as the process does not significantly change the nutritional content of food. The FDA requires that irradiated products be labeled with "radura." The World Health Organization, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the American Medical Association, and other groups have endorsed irradiation of food. With the eruption of the Nongshim case, the KFDA said it will have to take a careful approach so as not to hurt innocent companies and damage the Korean consumer industry. |
