MVP's true colors on display in Suns' playoff win

DALLAS -- White, black, green or blue, on Friday night in his old stomping grounds, Steve Nash proved why he's this year's MVP.

| His much-deserved honor is about poise and grace, not nationality or race.
Playing what should have been one of the more emotional games of his career -- a return to his home of six years for a playoff swing game -- Nash was the most composed player on the court in Phoenix's 119-102 Game 3 victory.
Forget about the numbers, though his 27 points and 17 assists are gaudy and eye-popping. Nash's brilliance lies in the fact that through his guidance, Dallas turned one of these playoffs' most entertaining games into a rout.
Just take the following into account:
- With 9:19 to go, Dallas having just tied it, Nash connects on a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining on the shot clock. His team never trails again.
- With 5:31 to go, Mavs within one, Nash draws a foul and hits one of two free throws. On Phoenix's ensuing possession, he gets isolated on Erick Dampier -- using a hesitation to freeze the player who essentially took his salary space -- drives to the hoop and, at the last second, kicks out to a wide-open Shawn Marion in the right corner: 101-96.

- Next possession, Nash breaks off a similar play and hits Jim Jackson on an unforgivable defensive breakdown.

Nash's passes were on the money, quieting a building faster than if the PA announcer had asked for a moment of silence to commemorate the end of Tiger Woods' cut-making streak in nearby Irving, Texas.
"He had a great game tonight. He had his plays on the drives, but he also found the shooters. He really mixed it up nicely," said Dirk Nowitzki, who no doubt misses the days when his baskets came far easier. "He shows what you can do with a simple play (pick and roll). He's so good at it, making stuff happen for himself and his teammates."
Rubbing a little salt in the wound, Nash would drop in six more points in the final couple minutes to put an exclamation point on his old team's collapse.
"Steve Nash just put another one in, dawg," a kid wearing a Mavericks jersey said to his buddy after Nash scored his final basket of the evening, a runner with about a minute to go. Of course, neither kid nor most of the sell-out crowd of nearly 20,896 actually saw the basket, having their backs turned as they filed out thanks to Nash's play down the stretch.
"The MVP always plays great," said Suns big man Amare Stoudemire, who led the team with 37 points, looking ever more like the Shaquille O'Neal for the next part of the 21st century, complete with thunderous dunks and missed foul shots.
"Steve is a great guy that commands the ball so much because he draws so much attention that it leaves most of us open and creates a lot of easy baskets."
Being Canadian, Nash is of course familiar with French, but you would think he answers questions in that language if you judged it by how he prefaces comments. It's not "oui," but "we."
"We have a lot of balance. We just try to move the ball and make it difficult for others. We have a tremendous amount of confidence in ourselves," Nash said after the game. "We have other guys that can get it done, and we make each other better."
Correction: The MVP is why cohesion existed despite vital cog Joe Johnson absent from the lineup. Nash is why the short-handed Suns persevered when other teams might fold. A hostile building can destruct a team, but with Nash at the controls, there was no chance of that. Of course, you'll never get him to say that.
Just as Nash credited the team for his trophy, he deflected all props on this night. Walking with him down the hall of the American Airlines Center as he filed out, there was no way I could get him to say anything remotely relating to individual accomplishments. It's just not his style.
Steven Hunter, the Suns reserve center, bestowed the praise instead. Asked if Nash was the best point guard a guy could hope to play with, the 7-footer responded with a, "Pssh... what? That goes without saying. No competition.
"He holds this team together. He makes Amare better, he makes our shooters better. All of us, man. I know we make him look good, too, but he's the man," Hunter said. "That's why he's the MVP. There might have been some argument among fans and the media, but there was absolutely none on this team."
You would get no argument from any knowledgeable basketball fan who witnessed Nash's performance on Friday night. From volunteering to play all 48 minutes with Johnson gone (he played 42), to making sure Stoudemire had his emotions in check, to ensuring his team never fell behind and let the emotion of the night swallow them up, Nash's night was a carbon copy of what he's done all season.
It's why his MVP status being questioned as an issue of color is asinine.
