윌 교수는 생수병을 들고 목을 축였다. 그리고 그는 벽에 붙은 스크린 화면을 켰다. 세계지도가 나타나며 곳곳에 빨간불이 들어와 있었다. 그는 다시 말하기 시작하였다.

“지금 이 화면에 나타난 붉은 점을 봐 주십시요. 아시아 지역에 12곳, 미국과 캐나다. 중남미 3곳과 중동 4곳 그리고 아프리카 5곳과 유럽 4곳에 불이 들어와 있습니다. 이 붉은 불은 점점 확산되고 있습니다. 지금부터 공식적으로 이 미생물 개체를 블루웜으로 칭하겠습니다. 이미 동의한 것입니다. 이것은 블루웜이 발생한 지역입니다.”

김지영 박사를 포함한 7명의 참석자 모두는 긴장감을 감추지 못하고 화면에 몰두하고 있었다. 그들 모두 사태의 심각성에도 동의하였다.

“자. 여러분. 여기 참석하고 계신 여러분은 이 사건을 판명하고 해결하여야 할 책임을 가지고 있습니다. 여러분 모두 서로를 잘 알고 계실 것입니다. 또한 여러분 모두 저희 글로벌 특이 미생물학회의 각 분과별 팀장이십니다. 이미 배포한 조직도를 읽고 짐작하셨겠지만, 가장 빠른 시일안에 저 미생물 즉 블루웜을 박멸하기 위한 백신을 만들거나 궤멸시킬 수 있는 새로운 방법을 찾아야 하며, 그것이 선량한 희생자의 발생을 막는 것입니다.”

맨체스트 대학 석좌교수인 리차드슨 박사였다. 그는 미생물이 인체에 미치는 전반적인 영향을 연구해온 그 분야의 세계적 권위자였다. 월 박사와 함께 이 회의를 주도하고 있었다. 그는 73세였다.

“지금 여러분께서는 이곳에서, 속한 분야를 컨츄럴할 수 있도록 모든 준비를 해 놓았습니다. 내일 이 시간에 다시 모여 실행 계획과 방법을 확정하기로 합시다.”

윌은 이마의 땀을 옷 소매로 닦았다. 그는 이 사태가 끼칠 세계적 심각성을 알고 있었다.

그 시각, 아시아의 타일렌드, 비에트남, 중국, 필리핀에서 정체불명의 슈퍼박테리아에 의한 사망자가 속속 발생하고 있었다. 이미 한국과 일본은 돼지고기 수입금지 조치를 해 놓았고 자국구제책으로 시한부 돼지고기 금식 조치를 취하였으며 그것을 위한 임시 법안을 상정해 놓은 상태이다. 돼지고기 섭식방법의 상이에 관계없이 무차별 사상자가 생겨나고 있었다. 특이성 박테리아 라고 만 파악하고 있으며 명칭조차 ‘슈퍼박테리아’ 라고 정한 후 지금까지 박멸방법이나 구제방법을 찾지 못하고 있다. 현재 최선의 방법은 돼지고기는 어떤 부위든 어떤 요리방식이든 따지지 말고 무조건먹지 말라는 대국민 홍보 외에는 다른 조치를 취하지 못하고 있었다. 동아시아 국가들은 공동 대응책을 마련하고 있었으며 그런 국제 공조적 조치의 영향으로 스와인 피딩의 매출이 줄어들기 시작한 상황을 파악한 N.C.W. 의 쿠르타이스박사는 디오나수스와 마주 앉았다.

“디오. 이 상황을 어떻게 보고 있는지 가감없이 솔직히 말해주시오.”

​“아직 그렇게 염려할 상황은 아닙니다. Swine Feeding Analysis co.에서는그 문제에 연관하여 어떠한 불만도 하지않고 있습니다. 그들은 이런 상황에서도 박사님에 의하여 새로 개발된 바이오그라파이딩(Biorgrofiding =Bio Organic Growing Feeding=유기물적생명성장촉진제)을 좀 더 빨리 전 세계에 공급 확산시키도록 금전적 협조를 아끼지 않는다 하였습니다. 현재의 이 상황은 우리가 만들었으며, 우리가 그 상황을 통제할 수가 있고 그와 함께 새로운 바이오그라파이딩으로 대체하여 더욱 신속히 확산할 수 있는 기회로 만들 수 있습니다. 박사님의 결정과 행동에 따라 N.C.W.의 전 직원은 더욱 활발하고 신속하게 움직일 것입니다. 그들 SFA에서는 박사님이 필요로 하는 비용 등 자금을 지원할 준비를 이미 하고있다 하였습니다.”

“디오! 그 자금이 수십. 수백만이 아닙니다.”

“그들은 그 이상을 준비하고 있습니다. 그 금액에 억을 붙여도 그들은 당장 지급할 것 입니다. 가시적 효과만 보여주길 그들은 기다리고 있습니다.”

쿠르타이스 박사는 속으로 놀랐다. 그들이 그렇게 자기를 믿고 있음에 놀랐고, 자금력에 놀랐다.

“좋습니다. 디오나수스 박사! 그들에게 2천만 달러를 즉시 송금하라 하시오. 입금 확인 후 한달 안에 놀랄만한 결과를 접하게 해 줄 것이요.”

이런 요구를 한 쿠르타이스 박사는 실행 가능성을 50% 정도 생각하였다. 더 정확히 그들의 확고한 의지를 알고 싶었고 그에 따라 앞으로의 발걸음을 옮길 것이라 생각하며 반신 반의하면서 묻고는 등을 의자 등받이에 기댄채 디오나수스 박사를 보았다. 디오나수스 박사도 의자에 등을 기댄 채 그를 바라보았다. 그리고 그는 쿠르타이스 박사의 눈을 보며 말했다.

“어떤 결과인지 저에게 간단히 설명해 주실 수 있습니까?” ​“내일 간부회의 때 발표할 것이지만, 간략하게 말하면 병주고 약주고 더 큰 병을 주고... 마지막 약은 우리가 가지고 있을 것이요.”

말을 마친 쿠르타이스 박사는 뭔가를 적은 메모지를 디오나수스에게 주었다.

“내일 간부회의를 마치고 홍콩으로 갑니다. 심샤츄이에 있는 구룡호텔에 예약을 할 것이요. 그곳에서 극동지부장들을 만날 것입니다. 그 메모지에는 홍콩뱅크 구좌번호가 있습니다. 제가 머무는 동안 입금확인을 할 수 있게 해 주시오. 물론 함께 갑니다.”

다오나수스 박사는 사무실을 나와 문을 닫고 돌아서서 잠시 쿠르타이스 박사의 이름이 금장으로 새겨져 붙어있는사무실을 바라보았다.

쿠르타이스 박사는 슈퍼박테리아에 의한 국가별 사망자가 표시되어 나타난 80인치 컴퓨터 스크린을 보며 조용히 말했다.

"오늘 이 긴급회의는 스크린에 보시는 바와같이 정확한 정체가 알려지지 않은채 막연히 슈퍼박테리아로 알고있는 살인박테리아를 구제하여 인류를 구하자는 것입니다."

그의 말을 받아 디오나수스 박사가 좀 더 강한 어조로 다음을 말했다.

"우리가 하는 일에 대한 국가적 홍보가 절대 필요한 때입니다. 즉 살인박테리아를 박멸하는 과정을 그대로 피해국가에 알려야 한다는 것입니다. 각 국가의 보건위생부나 국이 있습니다. 그들과 힘을 합쳐 홍보해 가자는 것입니다. 그것은 새로 개발된 우리 제품의 시장확장을 위한 신뢰구축으로 연결될 것이며 또한 그것은 판매증진을 결과합니다. 각국의 수입 판매공급을 맡고있는 에이전트회사에게는 날개를 달아주게 됩니다."

쿠르타이스 박사는 디오나수스 박사의 말에 동조하여 박수를 치자 모두가 그에 맞춰 기립박수가 되었다. 박수가 끝나고 모두가 다시 자리에 앉았을 때, 홍콩대학 팡 박사가 일어나 좌중을 둘러보고 말했다.

“최근에도 덜 익힌 돼지고기를 먹은 후 사망한 환자의 몸에서 유구미낭충이 발견되었습니다. 저는이 유구미낭충의 변종이 아닐까 연구하고 있습니다. 유구미낭충은 인간에게 치명적이지만, 멸절방법을 찾는 것은 가능합니다. 동시에 진핵미생물에 대한 접근도 하고 있습니다. 막으로 둘러쌓인 핵을 가진 진핵미생물은 발견된 것 보다 변종이 얼마든지 있을 수 있습니다. 진입경로도 찾고 있습니다.”

“바로 그것입니다.그런 연구과정을 노출시킨다면, 우리 회사의 좋은 이미지를 광고하는 효과를 얻을 수 있습니다. 그 전 과정을 프로세싱하며 그 사이 사이에 박사님의 연구과정과 기대가능 성과를 나레이션해 두는 겁니다. 어떻습니까?”

그 같은 시각. 글로벌 특이미생물학회 3층 회의실에는 긴장감이 돌고 있었다. 어제와는 전혀 다른 분위기였다.

“어젯밤 사이에 두개의 긴급 동의를 구하는 일이 발생하였습니다. 저는 저녁에 전 수상이신 좐 테이너 변호사를 만났습니다. 그 분은 이 조직을 역동적으로 움직여 줄 작전 기획자가 필요하다 하였으며 한 사람을 추천하였습니다. 우리 모두는 학자이지 전략이나 전술등 작전과 추적에 대하여 잘 모르며 알 필요도 없었습니다. 또한, 은밀하게 움직여 줄 뭔가가 필요하다는 그 필요성만 느끼고 있습니다. 쉽게 말하면, 우리는 각 분야의 전문가입니다. 그러나 그 전문가를 통솔할 사람이 필요하다는 의미입니다. 동의합니까?”

윌 박사가 긴장된 어조로 차분히 말한 후 6명의 박사들 한 사람 한 사람 돌아가며 보았다. 모두들 고개를 끄득이며 침묵하였다.

“그는 우리가 하는 일에 방해하거나 거추장스럽게 하지 않을 것입니다. 그는 우리 곁에 없습니다. 그러나 그는 우리 곁에서 우리를 보호할 것입니다.”

모두가 그 말에 놀라며 다시 긴장하였다. 이것은 제 4 세계 전쟁의 발발을 막기위한 절박한 상황속의 연구개발인가? 아니라면 무슨 첩보영화 속의 한 장면을 연출하고 있는 것인가? 하는 의아함이었다. 그의 말은 다시 이어졌다.

“그리고 지금 우리는 많은 시간을 가지고 있지 않습니다. 우리가 많은 시간을 가지게 되면 그 만큼 무고한 사람들이 사망하는 사태가 계속 번질 것입니다. 국가 정보원에서는 작위적 테러급으로 격상하여 다루고 있습니다. 우리는 하루 속이 이 불명확한 사망 사건을 막고 해결하여 재발하지 않도록 하여야 합니다. 동의합니까?”

역시 모두가 심각히 듣고 고개를 끄득였다.

“다음은, 김지영 박사가 그리스와 이집트로 조사차 다녀 올 것을 건의했습니다. 혹 다른 이견있습니까?”

“아니! 이런 상황에 여자 혼자서 조사차 간다니요? 그렇게는 하지 말아야 하는 것입니다. 김 박사의 생각을 들어 볼 수 있을까요?”

고대분자생물학 (AncientMolecular biology, 古代分子生物學)의 세계 최고권위자인 더글라스 박사가 얼굴에 가득 걱정을 띄고 옆에 앉은 김지영 박사를 보며 물었다. 김지영 박사가 일어섰다. 그는 좌중을 둘러 보고는 윌 박사를 보자 윌 박사가 고개를 끄득였다.

“더글라스 박사님. 걱정해 주셔서 고마워요. 제가 박사학위를 위하여 읽은 논문 중에 ‘엔시언트 미생물의 미스터리’ 라는 연구발표문이 있어요. 그 발표문을 쓴 쿠르타이스 박사가 현재 그리스에 있는 것으로 알고 있어요. 그 분을 만나 특이 미생물을 접한 경험을 듣고 이집트의 현장을 보고 올 계획이예요. 그냥 여행으로, 그러나 속히 다녀 올 것입니다.”

“그래도 여자 혼자서는 위험해요. 누가 도와줄 사람없을까요?”

​더글라서 박사는 마음이 놓이지 않았다. 너무 이쁘고 아름다운 젊은 박사가 어려운 상황에서 남자 혼자서도 힘들어 하는 그러한 일로 먼 여행을 가는 것을 보고만 있다는 것에 안타까워 하였다.

“네. 걱정마세요. 제가 보디가드 한 분을 찾아 같이 가도록 할께요.” ​지영은 제임스를 생각했다. 일단은 잡고 때를 써 보리라 순간적으로 마음먹었다.

"엄마. 며칠내로 토론토에 올 수있어요?"

"갑자기 토론토는... 왜? 지영아. 무슨 일 있어?"

"엄마는~ 그냥 엄마가 보고싶어서."

"다 큰 계집애가 젖달라고 칭얼되네. 지영아. 무슨일이야?"

"엄마. 와줄거야? 못 와줄거야? 나 급하단 말이야. 엄마~"

"어휴~ 이쁘게도 되먹었어. 언제 도착하면 되는데?"

"아하- 역시 내 엄마. 지영이 엄마야. 이번 주 금요일 밤에 도착하면 토요일 일요일 제임스 아저씨랑 같이 셋이서 놀 수 있는데..."

"지영아. 그런 일이야? 그러면 나 안간다."

"스탑! 스탑! 스탑! 엄마. 그 일이 아니야. 그건 부수적이고 내가 다음 주에는 그리스로 가야한단 말이야. 그래서 방을 비워둘 수가 없어서... 그 사이 엄마가 와서 지켜달라고."

"무슨 방을 왜 지켜야 하는데? 점 점 잘 모르는 것들만 이야기 하는구나."

"응. 내가 말 안했어? 제임스 아저씨가 협회 가까운 곳에 있는 아주 분위기와 주변 환경이 좋은 콘도의 원룸을 랜트해 주셔서 그곳에 혼자 지내고 있어. 참 좋아. 엄마."

"아- 그랬구나. 바쁘서 전화 못해 미안하다고 그럴거지?"

"ㅎㅎㅎ 엄마는 어떻게 그렇게 내 속을 다 드려다 보시우~. 응. 맞아. 엄마. 정말 심각한 일이 벌어지고 있어. 만나서 말해 줄께."

"제임스 아저씨는 곁에 있니?"

"엄마는~ 내 그러실줄 짐작했어요. 바꿔드려요?"

"됐네요. 그럼 언제 도착하면 돼?"

"특별히 준비하실 것은 없어요. 요즘은 낮에 출발해서 낮에 도착하는 비행기편이 있으니 그걸 이용해요. 제임스 아저씨하고 다 의논할 거잖아. 저는 빠를수록 좋아요. 엄마 빨리 보고 싶으니까."

"어유~ 누가 저 애를 박사라고 부른다니... 알았다. 지영아. 토론토에서 만나자."

현재 동남아 사태는 생각보다 심각했다. 각국 보건성 장관들이 연일 화상회의를 하고 있으며 각국 의료국도 백신개발을 제약회사에 독촉하고 있으나 아직까지 뚜렷한 진전을 보이지 못하고 있었다. 그 같은 날, 토론토의 글로벌 특이미생물학회에선 긴급회의가 열리고있었다.

"이미 뉴스를 통해서 잘 알고 계시겠지만 현재 상황은 더욱 심각합니다. 돼지고기 섭취로 인한 사망자가 점점 늘어나고 있습니다. 유사성 사망환자도 발생하였다는 보고가 비에트남에서 있었습니다. 현재 더 정확한 보고를 기다리고 있습니다만 좀 전의 보고 로는 소고기 내장 부위를 먹은 사람이 같은 증세로 사망하였다 합니다."

윌 교수가 몹시 흥분된 목소리로 회의실을 공포로 몰아넣었다.

"김지영 박사의 최근 보고서에는 블루웜의 원주가 지금까지 알려진 것과는 전혀 다른 성질과 생태적 특이성을 가지고 있다 하는데 아시는 분 있습니까?"

윌 교수가 노트북을 보며 말했다.

"특이점은 세계 여러나라에서 돼지고기를 식용하고 있음에도 불구하고 사망환자가 발생한 곳은 동남아라는 것입니다. 이 점에 유의하여 발아과정을 연구 조사한 결과는 아직 완전하지 않지만, 동남아의 어떤 미세한 전파나 진동이 다른 문화권의 국가들과는 다른 특이성을 띄고 있으며 그 진동이 에그에 영향을 주어 발아하는 것이 아닐까 합니다. 이러한 과정이 맞다면 원주가 소든 다른 가축이든 같은 결과를 만들 수 있습니다. 왜, 돼지인가 의심하였는데, 소에도 라니 제 생각이 맞다는 확신이 섭니다."

“저도 그 말씀에 동감합니다. 제가 조사한 결과는 인류역사상 미생물을 처음 발견한 Anton vanLeeuwenhoek이래로 현재까지 이러한 블루웜 혹은 유사한 미생물이 발생한 경우가 없었습니다. 새로운 종의 미생물이 탄생한 것이라고 봐도 틀림이 없습니다. 가장 진화된 특이 미생물이지요.”

특이 미생물의 역사를 연구하는 분야의 권위자인 Damianus 박사가 그의 앞에 놓여진 랩탑컴퓨터를 보며 말했다. 그의 목소리는 떨리고 있었다.

“혹 미생물 변종은 아닐까요? 슈퍼박테리아같은...”

엘레나 케플러 박사가 데미아누스 박사를 응시하며 따지듯 물었다. 데미아누스는 아직 확신할 수는 없었다. 그의 물음에 망설였다. 그 때 김지영 박사가 허리를 펴며 말했다.

“저의 생각은 그럴 가능성이 농후하기에 이번 여행을 자청한 겁니다. 그리스에 있는 쿠르타이스 박사를 만나면 알 수 있다고 판단되며, 그 정체를 알게되면 제거하는 방법이나 최소한 구제를 위한 백신을 만들 수 있는 방법을 찾을 수 있을 겁니다.”

그녀의 확신에 찬 말을 들은 좌중은 그녀를 쳐다 보았다. 젊고 아름다웠다. 동양의 미인이었다. 엘레나 조차도 그녀에게 호감의 미소를 보냈다.

“좋습니다. 준비가 되는대로 곧 출발하십시요. 시간이 없음을 인지하시고 이 중대한 미션을 성공적으로 마무리할 수 있길 바랍니다. 혹 도움이 필요할 때 우리는 적극 도울 것입니다.” 윌 교수가 김지영 박사의 미션에 대한 확실한 결론을 내며 마무리하였다.

회의실에서 나온 김지영 박사는 윌 교수의 방으로 갔다. 그가 회의장을 나서며 잠시 들러달라고 말했었다. 김지영이 윌 교수의 방문을 노크하고 들어가자 창가에서 있던 윌 교수가 돌아서며 무겁게 말했다.

“김 박사. 지금의 사태가 얼마나 급박하고 중대한 줄은 알고 계시겠지요?” ​“예. 짐작하고 있어요. 자칫 시간이 오래 걸리면, 무고한 수 많은 생명이 희생될 것도 짐작하고 있어요. 그래서 그 백신을 만들 수 있는 방법을 빨리 찾으려고 해요.”

“김 박사의 심정 잘 압니다. 그러나, 지금 이 일은 연구과정과는 전혀 다른 현실이고 자칫 김 박사 스스로가 오염될 수가 있다는 겁니다. 그 점 명심하여 조심하십시요. 그리고 김 박사를 돕겠다는 사람은 누구인가요?”

“실은 없어요. 아까는 다들 걱정하실까봐 그렇게 말한거예요. 교수님이 말씀하신 것과 같이 다급하고 중대한 상황 앞에서 연구실에만 앉아서 방법을 찾기에는 시간이 없어요. 제가 도움이 필요하면 직접 전화할께요. 저도 심증은 있지만 확신은 가지고 있지 않아요. 그러나 이곳에서 기다릴 수는 더 더구나 없기에 심증을 확인하려는 거예요.”

“말릴 수 없어서 미안합니다. 김지영 박사. 저의 입장은 누구라도 이 문제를 해결 할 수 있는 방법을 찾으려 한다면 말릴 수 없습니다. 지금 이 미션여행 계획은 협회내부의 결정입니다. 그러나 3일내 연락이 없으면, 지금의 상황을 보건청에 보고해야 합니다. 그리고 이 봉투 안에 쓸 수 있는 돈이 들어있습니다. 협회가 공용으로 사용하는 신용카드가 있지만, 이번은 모든 비용을 현금으로 지불하여야 합니다. 저는 개인적으로 절대 혼자 행동하는 것은 반대합니다. 스스로 도와 줄 수 있는 적임자를 찾아 함께하길 바랍니다.”

읠 교수는 누른색의 봉투를 내 밀었다. 지영은 두 손으로 그 봉투를 받았다. 윌 교수는 다시 지영의 손을 잡았다. 그 손바닥에서 절박함을 느낄 수 있었다. 뭔가 지영의 생각보다 더 절박하고 중요한 일이 숨겨져 있는 것같았다. 지영은 심호흡을 크게 한 후 윌 교수에게 밝은 미소를 지어보였다.

“Please look at the red dot that appears on this screen right now. 12 locations in Asia, the United States and Canada. The lights are on in 3 places in Central and South America, 4 in the Middle East, 5 in Africa, and 4 in Europe. This red fire is spreading more and more. From now on, we will officially refer to this microbial entity as blue worm. You have already agreed. “This is the area where the blue worms originated.”

It was Dr. Richardson, a distinguished professor at the University of Manchester. He was a world authority in the field of research on the overall impact of microorganisms on the human body. He was leading this meeting with Dr. Wall. He was 73 years old.

“Now you have prepared to take the field you belong to here nationally. Let’s meet again tomorrow at this time to finalize the action plan and method.”

Will wiped the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve. He knew the global seriousness of this situation.
