"그리고 미국 C.I.A. 그리고 C.S.I.S.
Earth Man (The Man Who Saved the Earth)-07
“Hahaha, that’s not it. Among the items you packed was Pain Relief. You need to get a hit first before you leave.”
“Okay. And if you see a shoe store on the way, let’s go and buy a pair of shoes for yourself. Okay?”
“Hahaha, how did you notice it so quickly?”
“One of the things I consider important is shoes. The shoes you wear must be comfortable, safe, and strong to be able to do anything that moves well. Now, here we go.”
We headed northwest from Elgonquin Inlet. In the towns around the road, many stores were already locked down due to the spread of Cobalex virus-19x, and the corpses of dead people collapsed like zombies were commonly seen. We tried not to look closely. Cars were zigzagging left and right on the road, blocking the road. I ran away from those cars, looking ahead with extreme caution.
“Sajemi. Why don’t you ask about me? Is it because you’re not interested?”
I thought about those words while driving. Because the beginning was unprepared, I couldn't even ask for the middle, and it seemed like it would probably end unexpectedly. Just like last night. I turned my head for a moment and looked at Cheshiro's face.
“Continue.”
"What?"
"What I want to say."
“Ugh, that’s bad. Really.”
“Tell me. It could work out.”
“How’s the pain? Is the Pain Relief working well?”
“Okay. Don’t divert the conversation…”
We were silent for a moment.
“I am.”
I held the steering wheel tightly, looked ahead, and listened to her with my right ear.
“After finishing high school in Earle Heights, North York, I went to Chicago. My dad and mom are British, so they wanted me to go to an Ivy, but I wanted to be a diplomat. Of course, I could have gone to UofT, but I finished my undergraduate studies in Chicago and went to MIT. “I studied communications and got a doctorate.”
Startled, I slowed down and looked at her. She spoke dreamily, looking far ahead.
“And I could have joined the American C.I.A., but I came to Canada. And then the C.S.I.S. offered me, so after six months of training, I ended up working with Justin, and the next year I decided to become a professor at their university.”
“Wow, that’s really amazing. Chesiro. But haven’t you thought about getting married?”
She turned her head and looked at me. And she was silent.
“It’s hard to say, right? You don’t have to, so let’s move on.”
I said. Because I need to hear something to breathe.
“No. It’s easy to say haha. But Sajeumi, why do you live alone like that? Talk to me. Now you know who I am. If you find it difficult to say it yourself, should I ask you?”
The highway was free. Occasionally, there were vehicles stopped on the side of the road due to negligence, but there were no people. Originally, there was not much vehicular traffic on this road after the Kovarax-19x pendem situation began. I heard that the Canadian Army is stationed somewhere near this town and that there is also an air force airfield. Now, only vehicles carrying people with urgent needs can cross the border, so all roads near the US-Canada border were closed to traffic and people refrained from moving. I was running along this road with empty thoughts. What I heard in one ear unfortunately went out the other. Ceshiro noticed this and asked loudly.
“Sajemi! Are you listening to me? Why aren’t you saying anything?”
I turned my head for a moment. Tears welled up in her big eyes. 'Shit! Even if I cry, it won't feel good, so why do you want to cry?'
“I’m listening. Just keep talking.”
“You’re using the excuse of driving to just look ahead and listen to my story. Why is that? Tell me.”
“Cheshiro. I know nothing about this situation before or now, and I have never prepared for it. I am just a person who lives without thinking. To be honest, I don’t have a dream. I somehow got into this case, but thanks-giving day. “I usually fix containers in preparation for the coming winter, or sit in front of them, look at the sky, drink coffee, and smoke cigarettes. That’s my life.”
As I spoke, tears welled up in my eyes because I felt miserable about my situation. Never would I have thought that in my lifetime, I would be driving on a road trip with a beautiful young woman who graduated from MIT and is a CSIS agent. But reality was making it happen and causing pain. Tears don't flow for no reason.
“So?”
Chesiro looked at me with a smile on her face, wondering what was fun. I was silent. I felt like I would cry if I opened my mouth. Cheshiro, who was watching, opened her mouth.
“By the way… you said you were a former officer in the Korean army, right? You graduated from the military academy and were commissioned, right?”
It was so persistent.
“No. I am a former R.O.T.C. officer.”
I thought I couldn't help but say something.
“I studied international law in college. I had hopes of becoming a lawyer. After I became a lieutenant and was discharged, I came to Canada with the help of someone I met by chance and have been living like this without learning anything. Is that okay?”
“I’m sorry, but who helped you come to Canada?”
“He passed away two years after I came to Canada.”
“I’m sorry. I heard you say that.”
“I told you to do everything.”
“Are you angry? Sajemi?”
I closed my mouth. Being depressed like this won't help you drive at all. At that time, I could see downtown Sudbury and the shops lined up along the road. I parked my car in front of a store with a sign saying General Store.
