"여보. 구두는 뭘로 할까요? 브렌든 스톤?"

우리가 카운티 건물 사무실 앞에 도착했을 때 눈은 멈췄고 바람도 불지 않았다. 혜정은 건물 좌측의 주차장에 벤츠 SUV를 주차했다. 나는 샤넬을 앞 가슴에 안고 혜정의 손을 잡고 건물로 들어갔다. 회의실에는 벌써 5-60명 정도 주민들이 먼저와 커피를 마시며 서로들 인사하고 있었다.

밖은 추웠지만, 실내는 미래에 대한 희망을 잡으려는 주민들의 열기로 더웠다. 물론 실내 온도를 높인 것도 원인이었지만, 그 흉악했던 COVID-19 Virus에 의한 세계적 Pandemic 상황이 각국의 백신 개발과 활용에 의하여 서서히 잡혀가자 그동안 움츠렸던 세계는 재 도약의 방법 속에서 활기를 띠고 있었다. 무소니 City도 해드무스 County도 새로운 진로를 열심히 모색하고 있었다.

오늘 그 촉진적 도약을 위한 희망의 방법을 이야기하는 날이다. 아직 모두들 마스크를 하고 있었다. 그건 아주 잘 한 것이다. 닥터 리의 엄명 같은 조언이 발동한 것이다.

"마스크를 착용하지 않고는 실내에 입장할 수 없다. 모든 주민께서는, 아직은 마스크를 착용하여 나와 이웃의 건강을 지켜주세요."

라고 주민들의 건강을 맡은 닥터 로서의 엄명을 내렸거든. 그동안 무소니에서 3명의 확진자가 발생하였지만, 더 이상 확전 되지 않았고 특히 해드무스는 제로 확진자였다가 백신의 공급으로 상황이 거의 끝난 것이다. 그러나 병원에는 아직 200명 분의 코비드-19 바이러스 감염 여부를 확인하는 일회용 키트는 보관하고 있다. 닥터 리가 라버레도 병원에서 받은 것이다. 또한 Flu shoot(독감 예방 주사)도 닥터 리가 병원을 오픈하면서 백신 주사와 함께 플루 샷도, 함께 주사하였다. 증상이 의심되면 누구라도 병원에 와서 검사를 받을 수 있게 하였으나 현재까지 더 이상 가능 의심이 되는 사람이 없었다.

우리는 연단이 좌측으로 보이는 중간쯤 의자에 앉았다. 젊은 사람 몇몇은 랩탑 컴퓨터를 앞에 두고 열심히 뭔가를 찾고 있었고 연단 양옆으로 다니엘 카와타와 그의 보좌관들 그리고 원로 어른들 몇 분이 자리하고 있었다. 간격을 좌우상하 1m 간격으로 놓아둔 의자에는 사람들이 모두 앉고 빈 의자는 이제 없었다. 주변을 둘러보니 몇몇 늦게 온 사람들이 서거나 벽에 기대어 있었다.

다니엘의 인사가 끝나고 총무담당관이 작년의 상황들을 설명하였다. 부족한 대로 제법 조직이 갖춰져 있었다. 경제 담당관이 보고를 마치고 격려의 박수를 받자 다니엘에게로 가서 뭐라고 귓속 말을 했다.

그리고 그는 연단에 다시 섰다.

"지금부터 닥터 스쟌나 리 와 제임스 리의 이야기를 듣는 시간을 가지겠습니다. 먼저 닥터 스쟌나 리를 모시겠습니다."

내가 인사를 하고 혜정이 옆에 왔을 때 잠에서 깬 샤넬이 나를 보며 웃고 있었다. 나는 상기되어 있었고.

혜정이가 내가 그랬던 것 같이 내 손을 꼭 잡았다. 우린 그렇게 또 다른 이야기를 한 것이다. 그때까지 모두가 조용하였다. 다니엘이 연단에 올라 마이크를 잡고 말했다.
